large, this irrevocable trust has more than tri-pled in value.
The investment strategy for the Convalescent Endowment Fund plans for long term growth and for maximizing the amount we are able to give for patient support.
The value of the Conva-lescent Endowment Fund now exceeds $30 million, thanks to a strengthening economy, an increase in dona-tions, and diversity of the portfolio. This is a huge milestone which enables the Foundation to contribute even more
to the care of the spe-cial patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children® across North America.
In 1994, the value of the CEF was $9 million; through member dona-tions and the Founda-tion’s ability to promote donations from corpora-tions and the public at

$2,000,000 for Children! It has long been a dream of Daughters of the Nile to top the $2 million mark for Shriners Hospi-tals for Children®. 2014 is the year that dream becomes a reality!! Thanks to members of Daughters of the Nile, the public and our corpo-rate sponsors, donations for the previous year were at an all-time high.
The distribution from the Daughters of the Nile Foundation totaled $1,626,523.00 and from the Canadian Founda-
tion, $435,542.00 for a total of $2,062,065.00. This represents an increase of nearly $338,000 over the donation last year.
Not only is it amazing to be able to contribute $2 million for patient care, research and other ser-vices for children, this brings the total amount
donated to Shriners Hos-pitals for Children® to over $54 million. This is, indeed, a wonderful way to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Daughters of the Nile.
Each year, the annual contribution from the Daughters of the Nile Foundation is distributed between the 21 hospitals in the United States and Mexico, and the donation from the Canadian Foun-dation is sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Canada in Montreal.
CEF tops $30 million

A reception was
hosted by Tab’Itha Temple No. 135,
Ft. Myers, Florida, on April 14th to
honor and present Agnes O’Melia with
the White Rose So-ciety plaque. The
White Rose Society is an honorary
award given by the Daughters of
the Nile Founda-tion to non-
members who
have given out-standing service
to or have con-tributed in some
significant mone-tary way to the
Foundation. For several
years, Agnes, a delightful 99
year old non-
member, has been
extremely generous and a staunch sup-
porter of the Daughters of the
Nile Foundation, Convalescent En-
dowment Fund. Having experienced
the personal trage-dy of her son Brian
being burned as a
young child, she recognizes the im-
portance of Shriners Hospitals
for Children® and the support ex-
tended to them by the Daughters of
the Nile. Thanks to the gen-
erosity of Agnes

Editors Note: The fol-
lowing is a testimony
provided by PJ Barnette,
whose daughter Ad-
disson was treated at
Shriners Hospitals for
Children®
As a single mom,
providing health care for
a child is very difficult,
especially when that
child has a medical con-
dition. When my
daughter Addisson be-
gan walking, I noticed
her gait was different. I
also noticed she was gri-
macing with each step,
indicating
she was in
pain. I took
her to her
pediatrician
who said she
was fine and
would grow
out of it. At
around four,
Addisson
started walk-
ing on her tip
-toes at all
times, unable
to flex her
feet, and she would cry
if I attempted to flex
them for her. Every
doctor said she was fine
and would grow out of
it. She didn’t and at age
6, she was unable to flex
her feet without excruci-
ating pain. Her feet
pointed outward, and
then we found the
Shriners through her
papaw who is a Mason.
We were referred and
had an appointment in
about a month. The
doctors didn’t even
need an x-ray to know
that my daughter’s ten-
dons were not growing
at the fast pace of the
rest of her body. She
needed extensive physi-
cal therapy (which they
taught me to do) and
specific orthotics for
her shoes which were
made before we left the
hospital. We received
follow-up and therapy
with the Shriners for
two years. Addisson
does not walk normally
and may need surgery.
She will need to return
to Shriners once she is
in her teens, but she
does walk and is very
active—something I
did not see for her fu-
ture. Shriners took the
time to listen to us
when no other physi-
cian would. They
treated my daughter
when I had no insur-
ance or money. Ad-
disson now plays vol-
leyball, basketball and
is a competitive arch-
er. Without Shriners,
none of this would be
possible; we would
still be search-
ing for an an-
swer that, look-
ing back, was so
simple. There is
a world of pos-
sibility out there
for my daughter
and, without the
Shriners, it
would not have
been possible.
Thank you so
much for all
you do.
Without you
there would be a lot
less smiling children
in the world. I am so
appreciative of the
selflessness and love
given to my family
when we needed it
most.
Mom expresses thanks

Meet Audin: A Beautiful Child
grow as Audin grew. Then
they pulled the balls down
and set them in each hip
socket during both opera-
tions. There were two inci-
sions in each leg. She was
in a cast from her arm pits
to her toes with her legs
spread out very wide for six
months with each operation.
An area was cut out of the
cast so diapers could be
used. Just changing diapers
was quite a challenge for
the family. After six weeks
they would return to the
hospital in Spokane for a
new cast.
David remembers it was
hard to carry Audin. The
cast doubled her weight.
They also discovered she
was allergic to protein
which meant another major
change in her care. The
hospital provided a special
car seat with harnesses that
were made especially for
these types of casts.
She was in the hospital five
to seven days with each op-
eration. Her parents and
infant brother Caydin
stayed at the Ronald
McDonald House, which is
next to the Shrine Hospital
and was very convenient.
The Shriners provided the
lodging and gave the family
vouchers for food and gas,
which was also greatly ap-
preciated.
Watching Audin get around
their home was interesting.
They made a black cart she
would use like a walker and
she did learn to walk in the
casts.
David is so thankful
Shriners Hospitals for Chil-
dren® exist! He said,
“People do not appreciate
them until they need them.
We all need to open our
eyes to charities and help
them in any way we can.”
The hospital staff was won-
derful to work with. David
told about a nurse named
Coca that would talk them
through everything that was
happening. It was heart-
warming for them!
Today, Audin is a normal
eight year old, running and
playing with her friends.
“Hot Chilies” is one her
favorites when jumping
rope. She was the honored
Shrine child at a recent Sap-
phira Temple Style Show
where she brought the quilts
she and brother Caydin
were given at the Shriners
Hospitals for Children® -
Spokane to show everyone.
They love them especially
because they were made for
each of them by a Daughter
of the Nile!
Audin Hoenke is a beautiful
eight year-old young Shrine
child from Helena, Mon-
tana.
When Audin was born, her
parents felt they had a per-
fect baby girl to cherish and
rear in Montana. Audin
was 15 months old when
her parents David and Kim-
berly Hoenke realized her
hips “may not be right.”
They saw their pediatrician
and he told them both hips
had hip dysplasia. He re-
ferred them to the Shriners
Hospital for Children® -
Spokane. The family was
very familiar with this hos-
pital as Audin’s great
grandparents, Past Potentate
Tom Battershell from Alge-
ria Shrine Temple in Helena
and his wife Louise, a
member of Sapphira Tem-
ple No. 79, Daughters of the
Nile, had been involved
most of their lives assisting
Shrine children. Now a
member of their own family
would receive this special
care.
Audin was just 18 months
old when she had the first
surgery on one leg and two
years old for the second sur-
gery on the other leg. Da-
vid said she’d been in a cast
a third of her life at that
time.
The doctors told them the
ball and socket of each leg
was abnormal. In each op-
eration, the doctors re-
moved some of the upper
leg bone in each leg and
inserted screws that would
