SFCC ARTS 2018-2019 SEASON / EMAIL: [email protected]

In September 2017, Picasso’s quote was displayed above the entrance to the first exhibition space at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, a landmark glass building along the banks of the Mississippi. At that time, the exhibit was an installation of numerous brightly colored and glowing ceramic sculptures of various ears of corn suspended from the ceiling. The effect of walking through this “cornfield” was whimsical and magical … like washing off the dust of everyday life.

This is what art can do when we take the time to enjoy it … it washes away the dust that dulls our senses, mind, emotions, and creativity.

Please join us for another fine and performing arts season that is sure to wash the dust of everyday life from your soul! In addition to the plays, concerts and exhibits, we will spend some time reminiscing about past performances as we celebrate State Fair Community College’s 50th anniversary … blue, white, golden!

We also invite you to invest in our fine and performing arts programs that fund student scholarships, outside the classroom activities and competitions. Your gift of any amount makes it possible for our students to grow their talents and reach their educational goals.

Bring art into your soul … see what happens!

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

- Pablo Picasso

Daum Museum of Contemporary ArtGisela Colon: Pods Sept. 29-Dec. 16Freed GalleryGisela Colon, well regarded for meticulously fabricated, glowingly iridescent wall sculptures referred to as “pods,” will display 13 large-scale, three-dimensional objects that unify the genres of sculpture and painting. These non-representational objects, asymmetrical and biomorphic in shape with perfectly smooth surfaces, provide a perceptual experience of light, color and space. The sculptures are formed from blow-molded acrylic plastic, laminated and layered with iridescent and fluorescent pigments. Colon’s processes produce changeable works that appear to emanate light and color from within. Her pods shift color before the viewers’ eyes depending on lighting conditions and viewing angle.

Colon has similarities with artists whose work is included in the Daum’s permanent collection – Laddy John Dill, Ralph Bacerra, Andy Collins, and Alex Couwenberg, all of whom ascribe to the California Light and Space and Finish Fetish movement. Their works will be displayed along with Colon’s to provide context for the appreciation of her sculptures.

Colon, born in 1966 in Vancouver, British Columbia, grew up in Puerto Rico where she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. Later she moved to Los Angeles and received a Juris Doctor from Southwestern University School of Law. In 2005, she began to paint but in 2012 moved away from painting to sculpture. Her artwork is included in collections at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, Palm Springs Art Museum, and Grand Rapids Museum of Art.

Selections from the Owen Collection of Western Photography Jan. 26-May 26A recent bequest from the late John Owen, formerly of Sedalia, to Daum Museum of Contemporary Art greatly expands the museum’s holdings in the area of 20th century American landscape photography. Owen left the artworks to the Daum in memory of his parents P. Cecil and Marceille F. Owen, also Sedalia natives.

Owen’s bequest includes 132 photographs that portray the sublime beauty of the American West and Southwest in the spirit championed by the influential photographer Ansel Adams. The collection contains two prints by Adams, including his well-known photograph Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite of 1960. Other important photographs are from Imogen Cunningham, Brett Weston, Eliot Porter, and William Clift. Many of the collection’s photographers studied with Adams or were inspired by him and other members of the persuasive group f/64.

This photo collective, founded in the early 1930s, espoused a common aesthetic that produced pictures with carefully framed vistas, great depth of field, and a focus that was evenly sharp from foreground to background. Conforming subjects range from awesome views of the Grand Canyon and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Canyon de Chelly. Other prints focus on less identifiable, but no less powerful, studies of flora and fauna, approaching storms, and rippling sand dunes. Taken as a whole, the Owen Collection of Western Photography is a celebration of the drama and splendor of America’s natural environments.

Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. For more information,
