KEEPING IN TOUCH...

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. — I Peter 4:10 NIV

We are entering into that great season of Thanksgiving. Of course it is about giving, and giving with an attitude of thanks. For us, as we come to Commitment Sunday on November 24, it is for us to think about our commitment of money. Jesus certainly never had any hesitation talking about money: Sixteen of the thirty-eight parables in the New Testament deal with money and stewardship. And one verse of every six in the Gospels deals with stewardship.

There is a story of a prosperous church member who was called upon to make a commitment for the year's giving to the church. "I'll give you my mite," said the well-to-do church member. "Do you mean the widow's mite?" asked the caller. "Of course," he said.

"Well, I'd suggest you give 10% of a widow's mite," said the caller. "That works out to about $7,000 a year or just under $135 a week." "Come on!" said the wealthy church person. "How do you figure that out?" “The widow's mite was all she had. It was every-thing she had to live on. Check it out in your Bible (Mark 12:41-44). Your family income is about $70,000 a year. Work it out for yourself."

Pretty clear. But then again we have always known that. Stewardship, of course, is more than money; it's recognizing that “all” that we have – our time, our abilities, our earth – all are gifts from God, and we are expected to be good stewards, good care takers of them. And we must give! I hope you will be captured by your own appreciation for God’s gifts to you... and be

willing to offer some of it back as a way of expressing your love of God.

See you in church,

Dr. Stanley D. Smith Intentional Interim Pastor

On Veterans Day we honor men and women who have served and sacrificed in one of America’s armed services. The holiday is also meant to highlight America’s quest for world peace and our nation’s desire for justice and freedom throughout the world — our nation’s higher goals. Veterans Day is actually rooted in Armistice Day. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies met with German leaders to sign a truce ending World War I.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson decided that our nation should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor those who served in the military. He called the holiday, Armistice Day. Armistice means “truce.” In his proclamation the president wrote that Armistice Day was an “opportunity … given to America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” The name Armistice Day was kept until 1954 when Congress changed the name to Veterans Day honoring veterans of every era. President Eisenhower called on all citizens to observe the day remembering the sacrifices of veterans and “the task of promoting an enduring peace.” We will be printing the names of our loved ones who are currently serving, discharged or retired. Fill out the form below and return to the church office by Thursday, November 7th.

Join the community of Downey for a special Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Monday, November 25 at 7:00 pm. This year’s service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Downey.

The service is going to be a great celebration and a phenomenal way to celebrate common heritage and worship of God. We hope that you will mark your calendars and plan to join us this Thanksgiving! There will be a time for fellowship following the service with desserts and coffee.

Your gift to the Thanksgiving Special Offering supports the training of our church’s emerging leaders - an investment in our church’s future. It helps underwrite the education of students attending our 14 member undergraduate institutions and our 7 seminaries or divinity houses.

These learning communities are an extension of the church, challenging students to understand and respond to God’s call to serve. We will be collecting this offering on Sunday, November 17 and Sunday, November 24.

God of all nations, you are our Strength and Shield. We give you thanks today for the devotion and courage of all those who have offered military service for this country … We ask today that you would lift up by your Spirit those who are now at war; encourage and heal those in hospitals or mending their wounds at home; guard those in any need or trouble; hold safely in your hands all military families and bring the returning troops to joyful reunion and tranquil life at home. Give to us, your people, grateful hearts and a united will to honor these men and women and hold them always in our love and our prayers until your world is perfected in peace and all wars cease. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. —Rev. Dr. Jennifer Phillips
