Highlights Christ the Shepherd I was reading the other day about Joseph in the book of Genesis. It is a fascinating story. Sold into slavery by jealous brothers, falsely imprisoned because of a lying boss’s wife, then raised to second in command in all of Egypt because of his faithfulness and the use of the gifts God had given him to interpret dreams. He then is reconciled to his brothers and family. What a real life story of someone overcoming adverse situations and to illustrate Romans 8:28: “ And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his pur- pose.” The part of the story that really hit me was the dream that Pharaoh had that Joseph inter- preted. It was the dream foretelling 7 years of famine that was coming into the land after 7 years of plenty. And it was because Pharaoh acted on Joseph’s God given interpretation of that dream that he was in a position to care for his people during the famine. It was a big deal. Interestingly enough, the Egyptian economy was based on agriculture, which means that fam- ine in their day equaled economic downturn. So after years of plenty and prosperity, extended eco- nomic hardship came. That scenario most likely meant that unemployment went up, folks cut ex- penses and tightened their belts, their 401K’s, which in those days were in the form of herds of ani- mals and land were under strain. Pharaoh planned ahead and others didn’t, so he was able to trade food for wealth, land, and animals. In other words the one who planned and prepared in times of plenty was able to survive and even thrive in the times of hardship. This is a lesson for each of us as individuals and for our churches. The current economic downturn in our own country has been a tough teacher to many of us as individuals and as a church, and put some hard strain on many of us. But we are learn- ing. To that end, I have been so excited by the planning and discussion in the combined finance committee as they have been working on a plan to make sure we are in a strong financial position going forward with savings for emergencies, a capital improvements fund to help us be ready for equipment replacement, and then from that foun- dation, a few years down the road, a plan to help us retire our debt. You will be hearing a lot more about those plans in the first of the year and we will be not only asking you to participate in helping us achieve the vision we believe God has given us, but will also be trying to provide opportunities for all of us who need to be better prepared to make the changes necessary. I was reading the other day about Joseph in the book of Genesis. What a real life story of someone overcoming adverse situations and to illustrate Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his pur-pose.” The part of the story that really hit me was the dream that Pharaoh had that Joseph inter-preted. And it was because Pharaoh acted on Joseph’s God given interpretation of that dream that he was in a position to care for his people during the famine. It was a big deal. Interestingly enough, the Egyptian economy was based on agriculture, which means that fam-ine in their day equaled economic downturn. Do you need prayer or does someone you know need prayer or do you want to pray for someone else's need? We have many ways you may ask for prayer and receive prayer. · By email - We have over 150 church folks that every week (sometimes more often if a special need arises) receive a email with all the prayers requested by our congregations. If you wish to be in-cluded and receive this email please contact Leslie Grill at [email protected]. · Prayer requests may be submitted directly to Leslie via email or through the website where a prayer request form is available. You may also submit prayer requests by paper. Those slips are available in the pews at LMC or at the welcome center at SRC. Place those slips in the offering plate.

· In addition to those above - prayer requests are published in the newsletter and bulletin. Colleen at the church office is in charge of these lists. Let’s all be a part of this powerful prayer ministry and stay connected to your church and its needs through prayer. Tap into one or more of the above prayer ministries today.

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24

Classes for Spring 2010 This spring we are offering classes that we hope will help you on your journey to becoming a fully devoted follower of Christ. Our spring classes are organized a little differently this year. We will be dividing the spring into two semesters, with a break for Holy week.

1st Semester: January 13th – March 24th Alpha – This class is an opportunity to explore the Christian faith in a low-key, fun and friendly way. Who is this course for?

People who are interested in investigating Christianity New Christians New people to the church looking to connect Christians who want to brush up on the basics.

Evangelism – Do you want to share your faith but don’t know how? Rev. Jack’s study will take the fear out of sharing our faith and show us how we can become better disciples by sharing the gospel. Wounds That Heal: Bringing Our Hurts to the Cross. Led by Pastor Tim. This book by Stephen Seamands shows us how Jesus understands the hurts we experience and can help us heal from them.

The Angel Tree will go up on Sunday, November 22nd at both campuses. The

Angel Tree is our annual outreach to needy families in our community. This year,

we will be helping families of children who go to Sikes Elementary. The tree will

be up from November 22nd through December 13th. Help us help those around us

in need this Christmas season.

To participate in the Angel Tree:

Pick a tag off the tree.

Buy a gift for the child.

Wrap the gift and put the tag on the gift (VERY IMPORTANT STEP!)

Return the gift to the tree that you took it from.

Please don’t forget that Sunday, December 13th is the last day to bring in your

gifts for the angel tree. Also, please remember to put your tag back on the gift so

that we know which child it is for. Thank you SO much for being so generous!!

Breakfast with Santa is Saturday, December 12th at the Shepherd Campus from 8:00 AM –

10:00 AM. There will be a free pancake breakfast for the first 300 people and everyone

will get to have their picture taken with Santa! Please bring one canned food per child and

help us feed the hungry this holiday season. If you are able to help with Breakfast with

Santa, we are still in need of cooks and a photographer. Please contact Emily Carson at

[email protected]. Thanks!

The Christmas Post Office is now open at both campuses. If you wish to send Christmas

Greetings to members of the cooperative parish, place the cards in the Post Office which is in

the Narthex at the Lake Miriam or Shepherd Road Campus. Contributions may be placed in

the Christmas Boot on top of the post office. This is an annual project of the United Method-

Matthew 25:40 ―The King will reply, ‗I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of

the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.‘

The fact is that even though we give each other lots of presents at Christmas, and it‘s a wonderful thing, it‘s

not our birthday, it is Jesus birthday. So I want you to consider giving Jesus a present this Christmas. Give

help to the orphan and abandoned children, give to the poor, or feed the hungry of Polk County in His

name. This year I am challenging every family in our cooperative parish to consider giving as much to mis-

sions this Christmas as you spend on your own family for gifts. Here are our opportunities to give gifts to ―the

least of these‖ in Jesus name. 1. Give to the United Methodist Chil-

dren‘s Home, who take in children from all over Florida. http://

www.fumch.org/ 2. Give to the Angel Tree Ministry we are doing

for needy families in our area through Sikes Elementary School. 3.

Our Christmas Eve offering will be divided between Lighthouse Min-

istries http://www.lighthousemin.org/ and Elder Point Minis-

tries. http://www.elderpoint.org Each of these ministries provide

food to folks in our community who need it. So how about we stop

acting like it‘s our birthday this Christmas, and give to those for

whom Jesus died in His name.
