SCAFFOLDINGSCAFFOLDINGSCAFFOLDINGSCAFFOLDING Maryland Institute College of Art - Environmental Design Junior Design Studio Fall 2009 The studio will explore the physical and experiential impact of New York City’s environmental and social forces on its architecture

(temporary and built). The sidewalk, the blurring of public and private space, and dialog of static façade and street energy, will be the initial area of focus. The studio will participate in the URBANshed competition, a redesign of the temporary construction walkways that are in use throughout New York City and other metropolitan areas. The students will research the conceptual principals and physical properties of the urban fabric. They will make multi-disciplinary drawings and spatial constructions to explain and document non-static environments. The students will develop a vocabulary of components and structures of assemblage in relationship to society and its current trends toward ‘sustainable living’ and adaptable architecture. The resultant of converging conceptual and physical densities will establish principles of development applicable to multiple scales and conditions. Over the course of the semester, each student’s competition design strategy for a temporary structure will be developed into a more permanent, yet adaptable system responsive to a larger complex environment.

The studio will investigate physical forces and material properties to develop a methodology of design. The student’s investigation will utilize performative materials, joinery, pattern-making, versioning and prototyping techniques to produce full scale objects.

Simple MachinesSimple MachinesSimple MachinesSimple Machines Maryland Institute College of Art - Environmental Design Junior Design Studio Fall 2008 The studio will explore the simple machines, their self-organization into assemblages and the subsequent effect of complex systems on

the built environment. The students will develop an understanding of the conceptual principals and physical properties through drawings and models. They will review multi-disciplinary drawings and diagrams in order to make drawing that explain function and processes in non static environments. The students will develop a vocabulary and engage in discussions of the machine in relationship to society and current trends toward ‘sustainable living’ and adaptable architecture. The studio will research the existing systems of collection and distribution built into the urban fabric and its supporting landscape. Each student will be responsible for evaluating their findings, describe their conclusions with drawing and modeling. With a developed understanding of the existing built environment, each student will propose a new component, or multiple components acting in unison. The newly proposed components will be designed to modify a specific environment in a positive manner as defined by the student.

Density in Architecture Density in Architecture Density in Architecture Density in Architecture Maryland Institute College of Art - Environmental Design Junior Design Studio Spring 2008 The studio will explore New York City through the lens of ‘Delirous New York’ by Rem Koolhaus. Students will begin with exercises to document the systems and forces acting upon an urban environment. They will analyze the complexity of the system interactions, connections and overlaps. Simultaneously, an investigation of layered physical materials at full scale will occur. Researching Central Park as constructed strata or ‘a synthetic arcadian carpet’, the studio will develop methods of notation and document the phenomena of density. The studio will evaluate specific regions of density being charged by surrounding urban forces and pressures. Each student will be asked to construct an operative strategy and material study that will become responsive to an altered environment. The resultant of converging conceptual and physical densities will establish principles of development applicable to multiple scales and conditions. The studio will create a juxtaposition of the Central Park study with the current High Line and its surrounding area.
