A Service For The Worship Of God 4th Sunday after Pentecost, June 28, 2020 ~ 11:00 a.m. Worship

Gathering around the Word

PRELUDE Antiphon V Marcel Dupré CALL TO WORSHIP John Ryan

One: This is the day the Lord has made. All: We will rejoice and be glad in it.

HYMN 14 For the Beauty of the Earth DIX

All sing together:

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the wonder of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind’s delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,

friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise. For thyself, best gift divine to the world so freely given; for that great, great love of thine, peace on earth and joy in heaven: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION John Ryan All: You sent disciples into the world, O God, and they

trusted that your Spirit would open hearts and homes to them. We confess that we don’t like to leave our comfort zones. You know that we don’t welcome others as Christ has welcomed us. For immovable feet, closed minds, shut doors and shuttered hearts, forgive us. Enable us not just to love others, but to welcome them into our lives.

[Pause for silent prayer] ASSURANCE OF PARDON John Ryan

One: Hear the Good News: even if we don’t lay out the welcome mat for others, Jesus always has the light on for us to come home. Jesus is our home. In him, we are forgiven.

All: Thanks be to God. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Peter Henry

Responding to the Word

HYMN 318 In Christ There Is No East or West ST. PETER

All sing together: In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. In Christ shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find; his service is the golden cord close-binding humankind. Join hands, disciples of the faith, whate'er your race may be. All children of the living God are surely kin to me. In Christ now meet both east and west; in him meet south and north. All Christly souls are one in him throughout the whole wide earth.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Heather McKee

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Bearing and Following

the Word into the World

HYMN 822 When We Are Living SOMOS DEL SEN OR

All sing together: When we are living, it is in Christ Jesus, and when we’re dying, it is in the Lord. Both in our living and in our dying, we belong to God; we belong to God. Through all our living, we our fruits must give. Good works of service are for offering. When we are giving, or when receiving, we belong to God; we belong to God. ’Mid times of sorrow and in times of pain, when sensing beauty or in love’s embrace, whether we suffer, or sing rejoicing, we belong to God; we belong to God. Across this wide world, we shall always find those who are crying with no peace of mind, but when we help them, or when we feed them, we belong to God; we belong to God.

standing 100 or more feet away from the rest of the worship leaders, and is facing away from them. The rest of the worship leaders wear their masks except for when speaking into the microphone and they do not sing during the hymns. Moreover, our worship leaders all stay well over 6 feet away from each other and do not share microphones and leadership spaces during worship.

Psalm 13

Our lay reader today is Heather McKee, a ruling elder of the PC (USA), currently on Session and co-chair

of our Social Justice Committee.

To the leader. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will you forget me for ever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider and answer me, O LORD my God! Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death, and my enemy will say, ‘I have prevailed’; my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.

But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Matthew 10:40-42 ‘Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous

person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.’

Ten Ways to Maintain Mental Health During A Pandemic • Focus on what you are able to control in your life, not on

things outside your control. • Set and follow a daily routine, including your sleep

schedule. • Stay connected to friends and family. • Select balanced, professional sources of news, and then

limit your exposure to it. • Get plenty of sleep and exercise. • Spend as much time outside as possible. • Eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, and limit caffeine

and alcohol. • Talk about your fears. • Include time in your day for prayer and meditation. • Find things that make you laugh.

Communications Committee Starting. Our Communications Committee is restarting itself in July after a hiatus of several years. We are looking for members who have an interest in how the church can engage its members and our community, especially through digital media. Please sign up here if you would like to learn more about this important newly reconstituted ministry in our church. Racism in America For the next seven weeks join members of this congregation as we tackle the hard conversation of Racism in America today. Each Sunday we will listen to a leading authority on racism, then have time for thoughtful and respectful dialogue about how we can change our own attitudes and then help make our communities a better place to live for all. The Summer ABC (Another Bible Class) will be via Zoom (you need to email [email protected] by Saturday noon to be included in the class list to get the Zoom link!) or you can watch it live on the church’s YouTube channel.

Mission during the COVID-19 Pandemic Many of our mission partners are struggling to care for their clients while at the same time being able to care for their staff. Your mission committees want the congregation to be aware of the challenges that our partners face so that you can support them with your prayers, your advocacy, and when possible, your resources. Your giving to the church helps support these ministries, If you would like to give over and above what the church is already giving you can always make a direct donation to the organization. Click on the link below to read more about a particular partner and how they are adjusting during these challenging times. Click here for more information.

Summer Feeding Ministry –Once again, the children of Huntington Green need food on the summer weekends, and DCPC has answered the call! Directions are a little different this year because of the pandemic, but the need is even greater. We will deliver 25 bags every Thursday to our neighbors. Bagged groceries need to be delivered to DCPC on Wednesdays from 9 am – 2 pm.

If you want to participate, please contact John Ryan so he can add you to the class roster and you will be sent the Zoom information.

From the Session Over the last two weeks, the Session of Davidson College Presbyterian Church took action on three items about which the Session would like our members to know. First, the Session approved three letters drafted by our Social Justice Committee to be sent to the three historically African American congregations in Davidson: Gethsemane Baptist, Reeves Temple AME Zion and Davidson Presbyterian Church. The letter to Davidson Presbyterian Church is the template for all three letters and includes some references that stem from our shared Presbyterian heritage. Second, at the request of the Social Justice Committee, the Session also authorized the placement of two banners and an alteration to our sign. Two banners will be displayed at the church, one on the ramp on Concord Road and one just outside the sanctuary on the campus side. One banner will read “Let justice roll down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream- Black Lives Matter” and the other will read “Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God- Black Lives Matter.” The main church sign will now display the following: “Love your neighbor- Black Lives Matter.” These banners and sign ground our call to honor black lives in scripture while also declaring our commitment to lift up black neighbors during this important moment in our history and culture. Finally, as part of protecting public health, the Session also approved the recommendation of the Worship Committee that Sunday morning

worship at DCPC continue online at least through Sunday of labor day weekend.

Connecting Safely During Phase 2 of the NC Safer at Home reopening, DCPC is trying to deliver content digitally but we are also trying to find ways to connect safely. Beginning June 22, we will be hosting Pastors on Patios with Parishioners. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, one of the pastors will be on the Gwen Appleyard Patio from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. This is a chance to sit and talk for a brief period of time, to share a prayer or just say hi. We will ask that people not plan to stay for too long and that people always remain at least 6 feet apart. If you cannot attend in person, don’t worry. Cal the church office and the staff will connect your call to the pastor on the patio. We look forward to seeing you safely and talking on the phone.

The Dove Do you remember Palm Sunday? It was supposed to include a live storytelling event called “The Dove.” Well, we still can’t do it live but we are having a storytelling event online on Sunday, July 12 from 6:30-7:30. Join Peter Henry and Robert Alexander and DCPC members for The Dove: lessons learned. We are seeking people who are willing to share 5 minute stories, no notes, that feature lessons learned. This event will be on Zoom but live streamed via our You Tube channel. If you have a story to tell- and well do- contact Peter Henry to sign up to be someone who tells us about lessons learned. For more about live storytelling, visit www.themoth.org.
