PASTOR'S MESSAGE The peach festival is less than two weeks away and the phone in the office is ringing off the hook with calls from the community requesting details.

The surrounding community of our church looks forward to the DUMC Peach Festival. They support it and some even make changes to their summer activities just to be able to pick up pies and enjoy live music while checking out our many vendors and food options.

The festivals are not just opportunities for us to fund our ministries but are an opportunity for the community to see and experience how we work together.

It is also a safe and relaxed way for the public to see us as a body of Christ working together. Like I said in a sermon soon after the Strawberry festival, it is a way of sowing seeds in our community. How we treat each other and treat the people attending our festivals reflects on us as a church.

Regarding the Strawberry festival we had on May 26th, I heard a few nice comments but sadly I also had some comments, with some of them in writing, about how church members were treating our youth. People barked orders at them and even witnesses felt the youth were pulled in different directions.

Even adults were feeling that one ministry was more important than another and I actually heard that a church member kicked over a water dish for a dog.

Regardless of how you feel about a dog being at a festival, a person in our community observed this interaction and felt it was necessary to inform me because of the perception it left about DUMC.

our witness and sow seeds in our community of who we are as the people of God.

In July of 2010, when I was appointed to Davidsonville UMC, one of the ministry areas this congregation thought they were great at and were actually known for was their friendliness and hospitality. Today more than ever, society is watching us, watching to see how we treat each other. Do we treat each other with dignity and Christian love?

Here we were, churchy people raising money for a cause close to all our hearts and our community and it appeared to some outsiders that we were not working well together. Who would want to become part of a congregation or faith family that fight and boss each other around when they have guests? That is what the local community is at these events; they are our guests and we need to show them that we can rise to the occasion. Your hearts are in the right place. We need to remind ourselves that God is with us and watching us and trust that God is still working in and through us to grow the Kingdom. Please come together at this festival and show how much you really do care about each other and appreciate our guests. In Christ, Pastor Lisa

COUNCIL NOTES ~

The Church Council met on July 16th and Committees have continued to meet during the summer. The next Council meeting will be held August 20th at 7:30pm. Future Council meetings will include all members of the Council (no more Planning vs Administrative). The Trustees have presented an outlined proposal to the Council for renovating the Sanctuary. This stems from the immediate need to take care of the issue of the buckled carpet which has stretched and needs to be replaced. As a result it’s been recommended that other work be completed at the same time. The thinking is that painting or working on the ceiling at a later date would jeopardize whatever is done with the floor. The proposal returns the Sanctuary to a look more similar to its original appearance. A motion was passed by the Council to direct the Finance Committee to review finances to determine the best way to fund the project that is expected to cost $65,000. It’s estimated that almost half that amount may already be available in the Trustees Reserve Fund. The Finance Committee will report back to the Council on August 20th. Sanctuary Renovation Proposal:

Remove the carpet and inspect the hardwood flooring. If it’s determined to be OK, the portion under the pews will be refinished and carpet will be installed in the aisles. This work will be done after painting and all other work is completed.

Walls will be painted.

Ceiling will be replaced. Options being considered include going back to the tin style ceiling.

Upgrade the sound system.

Determine if the lighting can be improved. The Trustees will invite the congregation to an informational meeting prior to any work being performed so anyone interested may review the planned renovations in advance. The pews will be removed at the onset of the project and stored. This project will take several weeks and the sanctuary will be closed during the renovations.

The Council was advised that there have been some reliability issues with the church bus (“Goldie”). As a result, a group of individuals have agreed to work with the Trustees to determine the best course of action regarding how to meet the overall transportation needs of the ministries at DUMC. If you have interest in this subject you may contact the Trustees. The Treasurer reports that giving to the general fund is below the budget and is about the same as 2011. The Council continues to recommend members of the congregation consider signing up for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) for their offering. It’s a great secure system for assuring the fulfillment of pledges. Please contact the office or Russ Smith for further details. The Council recognizes the relationship between the Stewardship of our Spiritual Gifts and the efforts of the Lay Ministry Committee to find persons to serve in the various leadership positions at DUMC. We are called to action as disciples of Jesus Christ in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20. Shouldn’t we therefore serve with willing hearts? In 1 Peter 4:10 it is written; Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. We should prayerfully consider our gifts and how we might offer ourselves in service to one of the various ministries at DUMC. Please reach out to inquire about positions by contacting Pastor Lisa, Bob Tomlinson, who is the Chair of the Lay Leadership Committee, or any of the current members serving in a leadership position. YOUTH MISSIONS REPORT By Kyle Durbin

After 15 years of committed dedication to the Appalachia Service Project, the youth council and Davidsonville UMC felt the time had come to move in a different direction with our summer mission trip. As a result, this past June, Davidsonville UMC sent a large group of youth and adult volunteers down to Vandemere, NC to repair homes that were damaged during last year’s Hurricane Irene. We divided ourselves into three teams: gold team — Cindy Borchelt, Kyle Durbin, Mason Moseley, Rebecca Gould, Austin Fowler, Christi Ducharme, JP Moseley, Kerin Webber and Nik Ostis; green team — Rhonda Ostis, Demi Heider, Andy Harris, Hayley Cohen, Chad Moeslein, Dalton Fowler and Ken Fowler; and red team — Chris Seidel, Bill King, Griff Howie, Kennady Moseley, Marty Hanbury, Luke Borchelt, Kaileigh Ducharme, Kristy Moseley and Kennedy Muise. Pastor Lisa Bandel and Pam Durbin also made it down during the middle of the week to visit and lend a hand.

Each day began with a morning devotional and worship, led by the youth in the different teams.

After a delicious breakfast prepared by some of our fearless leaders, the teams set out to their three work sites. Gold Team spent most of their day painting and finishing the inside of a house, thanks to Cindy Borchelt’s excellent interior design advice. When they weren’t working (or singing and dancing), JP Moseley had a number of meaningful discussions concerning the faith and future of our youth. The Green Team had the privilege of finishing the floors and detailing a house for a 102 year old woman who had been out of her house for over a year. By the end of their work, she was able to move back in! The Red Team probably had one of the most physically strenuous tasks, completely reroofing a house in 100 degree weather, all the while being attacked by oversized, evil, mutant mosquitoes. After a long days work, the

crews returned home to a delicious dinner (a significant upgrade from previous mission trips), typically prepared by Rhonda, Kristy, and Cindy.

One of the greatest things experienced on our Summer Mission Trip with the Youth Group was the

evidence of how close everyone grew together as a family in faith. Team rivalries resulted in some of the funniest stories you’ll ever hear, from hijacking the “colors” from other teams, to spray painting shoe laces. However, it was all in fun, and when time came to lend a hand between groups, everyone was willing to go the extra mile to make sure the jobs got done and everyone stayed motivated. Our discussions at night centered around our United Methodist heritage, and not only did the youth learn a vast amount of new information, they were also able to openly discuss their personal faith lives, their perceptions of Christianity, and how they best thought the church could grow. All in all, the trip was a true blessing to everyone that attended. We owe a huge thank you to Damon Ostis for the countless hours he put into planning, organizing, and coordinating this effort. We can’t wait to do it again next summer!

Lay Leadership Committee

Hello to all members of Davidsonville United Methodist Church. It is the time of year that we get our

membership to step up and belong or head up a committee in our Church.

We have had far too many members on some of these committees for a long period of time, and it is time for

others to join in on the fun and frolics of the Church. Our needs are great and few have volunteered to fill

some of these positions. We need new blood on the Church Council, Trustees, Staff Parish, Finance

Committee, Lay Leadership, as well as new leaders for these important groups. .

We will be asking members to join and if you are interested, please contact a member of the Lay

Leadership committee. Please make an effort to serve our Church.

From the CrossRoads

By Liz Hopkins

CrossRoads is halfway through its Summer Adventure. This summer program serves school age children

along with the year-round pre-schoolers. Each summer week has a theme and features relevant art and craft

projects, games, celebrations, and special visitors.

Assistant Director Denise Hicks resigned, and the Committee agreed to operate for a trial period without a

replacement. Members of the dedicated and talented CrossRoads staff have stepped forward to assist

Director Salas, as needed.

The Office of Child Care issued a new license to CR. It gives approval for an infant/toddler room.

CrossRoads will now accept children as young as 18 months.

The Committee and the Director have placed an increased emphasis on religious education at CrossRoads.

Kyle Durbin is now CrossRoads Chaplain. He has developed a curriculum that will ensure 30 minutes each

day of appropriate Christian themed stories, videos, crafts and music for all pre-school children.

A new smaller playground will be installed to better accommodate safe play for CrossRoads’ youngest

students. This was a request by CrossRoads parents, and some of the funds to pay for it were raised by book

sales and CrosssRoads’ profit from student photos.

The institutional sized refrigerator in the old kitchen is another new purchase by CrossRoads. It relieves the

need for the school to use refrigerator space in the church kitchen. However, CrossRoads will still be using

some freezer space there. Cupboards near the new refrigerator are now designated for CrossRoads supplies,

getting them out of the pantry. This should be welcome news to all groups who must access the pantry for

supplies.

A third major CrossRoads purchase is a new coded entry lock which has been installed. It is operational only

during CrossRoads hours of operation bringing added security to the building.

CrossRoads continues to show a profit, with net income to date exceeding the amount budgeted. These funds

support the work of Social Needs and Outreach, the extensive repair and refurbishing work done by the

Trustees to the annex, church building and property, and other needs as they arise.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee met on July 16, 2012 to review the operating results for the first six months

of 2012. Low revenues has been the main factor for the church experiencing a year to date deficit

of $22017. Without some significant improvement, our deficit will rise to $30000 by the end of the

summer. We experienced a similar decline last year and ended the year with expenses exceeding

revenues. Let’s hope this situation turns around in the Fall and we are able to overcome the

shortfalls. Our church programs are too important to be forced to cut back for the lack of funds.

CrossRoads Child Development Center continues to perform above expectations. For the first six

months of this year over $60000 has been distributed to church capital improvement funds and local

social missions as designated by the Church Council.

We recently completed the annual financial audit and forwarded the report on to the Baltimore

Washington Conference. Thanks go out to Tommy Tucker, Caroline Day Scruggs, David

Schwenker, and Marilyn Fate, all of whom gave their time and talents to finish the project on time.

The workmen’s compensation audit was completed and with the results indicating no major changes

in our premium for the coming year.

In addition to addressing the need for increasing current revenues, in September the Finance

Committee along with the Stewardship sub-committee, will begin planning a financial program for

2013.

Russ Smith, Finance Chair

Performance Camp By Kyle Durbin This year was the first year the Summer Performance Camp at Davidsonville UMC officially represented Anne Arundel County Recreation & Parks as the exclusive performance camp in the region. Under the direction of Kyle Durbin and Bob Waddell, over 30 pre-school and elementary aged children spent a week honing their acting, singing, and dancing skills. The theme for this year was a day at the beach, and activities and crafts reflected a tropical paradise. Rebecca Gould and Christi Ducharme returned to help as counselors, while Kennady Moseley stepped up with some fantastic choreography for her first year as a counselor. The week ended with a play, “Hang Ten,” written by Kyle Durbin, that featured the children singing and dancing to some of the most popular songs by the Beach Boys, while they acted out a story in which (Help Me) “Rhonda” and her friends worked together to save their beach from the “Mean Old Man Damon.” This, of course, was NO relation to any other Damon we might know! ;-)

Confirmation Class 2012 by Kyle Durbin 1 Corinthians 13:27 tells us that “[we] are the body of Christ.” This past May, we celebrated six new members joining the body of Christ, here at Davidsonville UMC. Charles and Becca Hollamon, Mason Baird, Bailey Masters, Abby Geiman, and Dalton Fowler completed a three month course, publically professing their faith and reaffirming the baptismal covenant at a worship service of Confirmation. The class was taught by Kyle Durbin and Pastor Lisa Bandel, who used a new, highly recommended curriculum called Re:Form to lead class discussions. Seven different units (Bible, Creed, Discipleship, Jesus, Other Beliefs, Tough Questions, and Methodism) covered topics ranging from “Who wrote the Bible, God or humans?” to “What the heck is prevenient grace and do I have to learn geometry to be Methodist?” Students also completed weekly assignments out of their “Anti-Work Books” and read the Gospel of Luke in entirety. Congratulations Confirmands! During the Confirmation service, Becca and Charles Hollamon gave speeches that relayed what they had learned throughout their course of study. Becca spoke to the congregation as to how she enjoyed the informational, comedic cartoon videos we watched during class, and that, just as Jesus was on a mission to help others, United Methodists are on a mission to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Meanwhile, Charles went so far as to profess that through his Confirmation experience, he found a faith that he never knew existed and didn’t think was possible. Amen.

WOMEN AT THE TOMB

Barbara Moore has contributed her original painting which has been placed over the fireplace in the

Annex. She provided this commentary as she presented the artwork to Pastor Lisa.

Dear Church Family,

When asked to start this project, I must admit I was both honored and overwhelmed. To have a

painting hung in your home church was an awesome responsibility. One that I took very seriously

from the start.

My first concern was to find a subject that would be pleasing and meaningful to the congregation.

Pastor Lisa, Kyle, Kristy and I discussed many ideas but when Kyle suggested “The Women at the

Tomb” it was something I had been thinking of myself and hadn’t expressed so it immediately

seemed right, everyone was on board and it was decided. This would be the perfect way to depict

Davidsonville United Methodist Church’s mission.

I went home that night and began the first of many drawings. I tried to remember the conversations

we had had about the beginning of the church and its movement forward. As I drew, the pictures

changed from what I thought I wanted to paint into something very different. My sketch went from

Mary running to tell the disciples, to Mary on the ground in front of the open tomb. Each time I

tried to add something I would be led to alter it or erase it completely and start again until the

picture became different altogether.

The paper, medium, and subject all were chosen for the special purpose of expressing the nature of

the “Story” of the painting. Each time I made a mistake it was used by God to enhance the outcome

of the project. The grainy overworking of the sky reminded me to add the sunrise, the warm brown

of the woman’s face was an overlay that worked and became the wonderful woman of color. The

two different colored hands that were meant to be shadow could also mean families of mixture,

diverse ideas or division. The women represented all of humanity:

man,woman,white,yellow,Latino,Indian,African,black,red, all and everyone included

as Christ wanted, loved just as Christ wanted. As I asked people to look at my painting, each

person found something that spoke to them. For example, my artist friend Karl was concerned that

the middle woman was holding the black one back from the tomb. I explained that I had painted the

outstretched arm protecting her from the unknown of the tomb. Karl’s history as a black man

possibly made him view the painting in a way of repression where I had only thought of it as an act

of compassion. Once we talked it over, he smiled and he connected with it in a different way. It had

become an opening for dialogue.

I have to say I did paint this, but it was created by God not me. I was merely a vessel used to tell the

story that the true Creator wanted revealed. I have been humbled throughout this entire process. I

sincerely hope you will find that it speaks to you as it did to me and I give it to you with all my

love.

Blessings,b

Connie's Corner

Dear Friends in Christ,

HELP! We have been invited to participate with

Severna Park UMC in a Stephen Ministry training

class beginning in September. The class will be on

Monday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30. We currently

have only two members who are able to commit to

this wonderful opportunity at this time. Please search

your hearts and prayerfully consider becoming a part

of this team. Any questions you might have can be

answered by checking the Church website and

clicking on Stephen Ministry or ask Pastor Lisa or me

any Sunday following church.

This is a 25-week course which only happens once a

year! There is no better time than the present. The

course will teach you how to listen; how to be a

presence in the life of a fellow Christian bearing an

unbearable burden. It is an awesome experience for

the Care Giver to feel the power of compassion and

an awesome experience for the Care Receiver to feel

the power of God’s love through that compassion.

We all suffer at one time or another from personal

crises. At such a time we need to remember that the

Church is our extended family, and we are blessed to

have this opportunity to serve one another. Find

comfort and strength in the philosophy of words

written so many years ago in another time, another

place, and as true now as then, “It is not within our

power to place the divine teachings directly in

someone else’s heart. All that we can do is place

them on the surface of the heart so that when the

heart breaks, they will drop in.”

Peace and Love, Connie
