Goal Setting Interviews
Thank you to all the teachers, students and families who participated in Thursday’s goal setting evening. It was wonderful to see how proud our students were to share their work samples and goals with their families. We set a target of 70% of families attending and we reached 60%. We will again aim for 70% attendance at our midyear interviews. These will be held Wednesday of Week 10, Term 2 after the Semester 1 reports have been sent home. Thank you to those parents who have already given us feedback on how we can improve our Goal Setting process. If you would like to provide feedback, please click on the link below or head to the front office to complete a short online survey.

If you haven’t already done so, please download the Seesaw application to keep up to date on what your child is achieving and how they are progressing towards their goals.
Open Classrooms
Continuing on with our goal of ‘Creating an Educationally Connected Community’, the first of our Open Classroom sessions will take place this Wednesday from 8:50am. Our teachers will be demonstrating how they teach numeracy to their students, with the focus on ‘differentiation’ (differentiation allows all students to be working on a similar topic, but at different levels of understanding). At the end of the session, please come along to the canteen area to be given some free numeracy resources so you can continue to help your child’s learning at home.
8:50 - 9:15am Morning Tea with Mr Sheen
9:15 - 10:00 Open Classrooms
10:00 - 10:30 Collect Numeracy Resources (Canteen area)
Cross Country
Thank you for everyone’s support and understanding with the rescheduling of the Cross Country Carnival. Thankfully we did get the weather we were after and the day went ahead without a glitch. Our students demonstrated their enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was also wonderful to see the support that was shown by so many of our families and friends. The occasion really seemed to lift the whole school community. I would like to give a special thank you to Miss Dunn who spent many hours organising and reorganising the event.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
There’s big news this week in PBL. Firstly, our students have designed some wonderful postcards that you will be receiving in the post if your child has received 20 CYBGs (Caught You Being Goods) this term. These postcards were designed and voted upon by our students. Congratulations to the following students whose designs were selected to be made into postcards; Brooke KB, VJ 1T, Shaaistah 4P, Hadassah 3M, Lillyarna 4I, Ashton 5S and Safeer 5/6D. No doubt these postcards will hold a special place on your fridge when they get to your home.
In addition, the SRC has liaised with all students to make the decision to host a school disco (during school hours) for our students who have received 8 Dawson Merits this term. This ‘Rewards Day’ is the first of our termly Reward Days for students who achieve this. Our students requested lights and smoke machines for the disco which we have accommodated, and to make the occasion just that little bit more special we have hired a company to run a ‘silent disco’. All students will wear headphones and bop along to the music, play games and follow instructions… IN SILENCE! This term’s Rewards Day will be held on Friday 12 April.
NAPLAN 2019
During May 2019, students at our school in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN paper assessments. The schedule for tests is as follows:
Tuesday 14 May - Language Conventions test (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Writing test
Wednesday 15 May - Reading test
Thursday 16 May - Numeracy test
On Friday 17 May, a ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test.
Students may be exempt from the NAPLAN tests if they:
● are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English,
● or have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.
All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are also available to meet the needs of individual students. Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed.
Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer after consultation with the school principal. To withdraw your child from NAPLAN, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with your child’s teacher if you need to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.
If you have any further questions, please contact the NAPLAN team on 1300 119 556 or [email protected]. For further information about NAPLAN, visit the NESA website.

Kindergarten have had the wonderful experience of attending Life Education (Healthy Harold) over the past few weeks. We got to meet Harold and learn about “My Body Matters” where students were learning about hygiene, physical activity and safety at home, school and in the community. All kindergarten students had an amazing time with Harold and will continue to learn more in the classroom with the workbooks that were provided by Life Education. Please enjoy some of our photos of your children meeting Harold and some of the topics that were discussed.

Geography and Maths
Year 1 have been learning about the natural, managed and constructed features of places. They have explored the natural features of places present in the Dreamtime Stories of the Aboriginal people. Students were eager to draw a map showing the natural features they discovered as they went on a Bunyip Hunt.
Year 1 have also been extending their subtraction skills. They have been practicing counting backwards and using number lines to solve
subtraction problems. They have also created their own subtraction problems

Life education for 3M The majority of students in 3M attended Life Education on Monday of Week 9. We got shrunk down to miniature size and took a tour through a human body. We learnt about the different systems in our bodies including the digestive, respiratory and the circulatory systems. We learnt all around our red and white blood cells and how they move all the nutrients and water all around our bodies.
We participated in interactive activities where we had to put the different organs into a body and then sort through good and bad choices for our bodies. We also got to meet Healthy Harold in miniature and normal sized version, which was really cool. We had a great time!

5/6R are working with fractions!
5/6R have been focusing this week on fractions. We began our lesson putting a variety of fractions on a number line. We looked at the denominator and the numerator to place them in the correct order noticing that some are equivalent fractions meaning that they represent the same fraction even though they may look different.

Healthy Harold visits Preschool
The children attended a Healthy Harold session called “Healthy Harold’s Play Day” that was designed for Preschool. The children learnt about how to keep their bodies healthy by drinking water, eating a healthy breakfast to give us energy, being active, having a rest time when we are tired, how to clean our teeth and what a healthy lunchbox looks like. At the end they took turns to pat Harold the giraffe puppet and say goodbye.
The children have been learning about “everyday” food like fruit, dairy, protein, grains and vegetables and “sometimes” food like cake and lollies. Mrs. Peoples has been showing them flannelgraph foods that they are naming and discussing whether they are fruit, vegetables, dairy or bread. They are encouraged to bring fruit every day and drink water instead of cordial or soft drink. Healthy eating has also been included in our preschool program by providing a grocery shop, restaurant, cash register, phone and reservation book, stove and other dramatic play props. A range of play food helps the children to discuss if it is healthy or not and this play has been very popular with the children.

Just a reminder to all students to continue to read at home every night and log the title of the book you read into your home reading log. Only one night of reading counts for a day, even if multiple books are read on the same night. If multiple book are read in a night then just write the title down of your favourite book only.
It is nearly the end of the term and a new log will begin next term, so get reading and fill your reading logs!
Mrs St John.
94% is our whole school attendance goal. Just a reminder that school starts at 8:50, any students who are late to school must be signed in at the office. All students who are late must provide a reason for why they are late. Students who are late miss out on important periods of instruction in their learning specifically in reading and writing.
Please make sure all absences are explained. You can ring the office on 9625-9031 and leave a message with the ladies, bring a doctor’s certificate or note in from home OR remember you can use our Skoolbag app to notify the school of your child’s absence. The absentee form is located in the ‘eForms’ section of the app. To download the app, please follow the instructions located later in the newsletter.

Cross Country
After a couple of false starts, we finally had Dawson’s Cross Country on Thursday 28th March. The day commenced with the students aged 8 years and over assembling at 9am on the edge of the bottom grass.
The first event was the junior boys race (8, 9 and 10 year olds), closely followed by the junior girls. The competition was tight and the students tried their best as they navigated the 3 laps of the course. As students ran towards the finish line you could hear the excited cheers and loud chants coming from the Freeman, Gaze, Lewis and Perkins tents.
The second event was the 11 year old boys and girls race with an extra lap of the course required, students had to pace themselves. At the conclusion of the 11 year old races, we prepared our seniors (12 &13 year olds) for the final race of the morning. This would be the last Cross Country event that our year 6 students would participate in at Dawson, so they knew they had to give it their best shot! The students proudly represented themselves, their house groups and our school.
Finally our very excited K-2 students had the opportunity to participate in their races after Break 1. The Kindy’s participated in their first ever Cross Country by completing one lap of a modified course. Students in years 1 & 2 followed after and completed two laps of the course. We were very proud of our students on the day, they all tried their best during each event and behaved beautifully whilst they sat and cheered along their peers.
We would like to thank the parent helpers who assisted on the day and also the parents, grandparents and carers who came along to support our students. We had a wonderful day! Stay tuned for the Cross Country results in the next newsletter

Sessions Another week another STEAM session, this week students have looked at decision-making. The idea of decision-making is to use sources of information collected and make informed choices. Often we are hesitant or doubt the idea we have come up with, however if they are collected and analysed correctly then it is as it is. We have looked at primary source collections via the use of our five senses.
We looked at simple tasks of categorising based on properties. We timed our methods looking at colours, physical attributes and distinct shapes and worked out that the speed of the task is related to how many attributes you analyse.
Once we categorised and worked out the sorting method, we developed flow charts. These flow charts then can assist when a new unknown item needs to be classified. This method is how technology systems work, instead of senses they have sensors and then work out what to do based on a pre-programmed flowchart. Here are our steam tanks at work this week
