A high performance rally wrapped in a fun size package. For this iteration we have ventured north of the border, to the magnificent West Coast of Scotland, where the landscapes rival any in the world and the sense of remoteness can, at times, make it seem as if you’re driving through middle earth. There’s also a neat symmetry in play today as we strike out from Loch Lomond, the largest freshwater “lake” in Great Britain, to Laudale House on the banks of the longest sea loch in the Highlands. In between these two aquatic giants, lie all manner of challenges as devised by Mark Appleton and his local assistant, the inestimable Andy Jardine. As the cars assembled in the village of Luss (hailed as Scotland’s loveliest village), a great atmosphere grew in the car park of the Loch Lomond Arms where, once again the weather was being kind to us. Scrutineering was the first obstacle for the crews and, whilst Jack Amies and Bob Hargreaves checked for safety and compliance, it was left to Andy Inskip to help Peter and Zoe Lovett find their ‘temporarily’ misplaced car keys. With a choice selection of hooks and bent metal though, Andy managed to wheedle the door of the Porsche open and ‘jury’ rig a starter mechanism. Thankfully, and maybe just in the nick of time, the wayward keys turned up - in yesterday’s trousers. Welcome to part two of our very own Quadrifoglio.

Day1: Loch Lomond - Laudale House, 22 June 2021

Gerardus Mercator, Dispatch reporter

Away from the heat and noise of the car park Gill Cotton and Loren Price once again manned the paperwork distribution desk and, just before a light lunch of Cullen Skink, Fred Gallagher, the Rally Director gave a welcome speech singling out a total newcomer to endurance rallying, Nick Kilpatrick who’s sitting alongside the long distance veteran, Charles Stuart-Menteth in the MG. We think that he, like the rest of the rally, is in for a great ride.

Rally time waits for no man and, once the plates had been cleared, at 12.30pm sharp with the pipes of Mark Morrison filling the air, Fred waved the Bentley of Clint and Dawn Smith away from the start line and straight up into the hills, with a Regularity through Glen Douglas then into two Tests. Down, and then up the famous Rest and Be Thankful Climb before the crews could draw their breath at the Time Control in the Inverary Inn on Loch Fyne.

This was a great day of driving and the midsummer sun continued to beat down on the rally over the next few sections, across the Falls of Lora at Connel Bridge and into another Regularity alongside Loch Etive which eventually took the Rally to the Corran Ferry and onto the Ardnamurchan Peninsula where we’d be based for the next three nights.

Much to the dismay of a herd of contentedly grazing deer, there was one final Test along the rugged shoreline of Loch Sunart, which ended with the cars screeching onto the driveway of Laudale House (pictured below), the night halt. With a mist rolling in from the water, no-one was keen

to hang around in the car park preferring instead to refresh themselves before dinner with a little something from the drinks cabinet.

Tomorrow sees a full exploration of this most westerly part of the mainland and, if what’s just rolled beneath our wheels is anything to go by, then it’ll be another day to remember. Slàinte Mhath (good health).
