Yr5 WEEK 10 © Fraser Stevens Learning 2015 * Please Note: these timings are based on what we'd expect from an average Year 5 student. These should not be viewed as limits please allow for extensions where students may be struggling, and be aware that some students may be capable of completing the work in a faster time. Day/Topic(s) Covered Page Number(s) Suggested Time Taken* Teaching Points Day 1: Synonyms and Antonyms Revision 3 and 4 15 minutes It's vital that we keep building students' vocabulary throughout this programme, which is why we'll be revisiting vocabulary types such as synonyms and antonyms frequently. Your child will already be familiar with these questions types, but they should remember to use a dictionary to help them when they get stuck. They're not expected to know all the answers immediately! Day 2: Non-Verbal Reasoning: Pointing 5 15 minutes This week's NVR work covers 'pointing', mostly by training students to keep an eye out for the direction that arrows or shapes may be pointing in. This is quite important as, similarly to last week, this can often reveal patterns that will help children come up with the correct answer in Non-Verbal Reasoning questions. Day 3: Ordering Numbers and Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages 6 and 7 20 minutes Putting numbers in order from smallest to largest (or vice versa) sounds very simple, but it's surprising how many students of this age struggle with it especially when it comes to decimal numbers. The main thing to remember is to look at each place value column in turn, from left to right, and not to be fooled by a long stream of numbers after a decimal point (for example, 2.5 is bigger than 2.434475). Converting fractions, decimals and percentages is relatively simple. Once students have read the examples, they should be able to complete the tables without too much trouble as long as they remember that fractions, decimals and percentages all represent the same thing. Day 4: Revision Sheets 8, 9 and 10 20 minutes These revision sheets cover the topics studied in this week's work, and students should use them to help highlight and strengthen any weaker areas before they attempt the Mini Test. If they come across any questions they don't understand in the revision sheets, students should take care to refer back to previous worksheets to help them figure out the right method to use to come up with their answer. Day 5: Mini Test 2 pages 20 minutes We would suggest that Mini Test 10 should take 20 minutes. Corrections can be done straight away (fresh in the student's mind). Week 10 Extra Activities! The extra activities below are designed to help students further strengthen skills needed in Year 5. They can be completed at any time that is convenient during the week's schedule. 1. Complete Vocab List 10 (2 words per day is a good way to break it down). 2. 'Conversion Snap' game. Can be played as a family or with friends. Instructions are on a sheet included with this week's pack of work. GL Assessment 11+ Course Week 10 - Parent Guide 1

Day 1: Synonyms and Antonyms Revision

3 and 4 15 minutes It's vital that we keep building students' vocabulary throughout this programme, which is why we'll be revisiting vocabulary types such as synonyms and antonyms frequently. Your child will already be familiar with these questions types, but they should remember to use a dictionary to help them when they get stuck. They're not expected to know all the answers immediately!

Day 2: Non-Verbal Reasoning: Pointing

5 15 minutes This week's NVR work covers 'pointing', mostly by training students to keep an eye out for the direction that arrows or shapes may be pointing in. This is quite important as, similarly to last week, this can often reveal patterns that will help children come up with the correct answer in Non-Verbal Reasoning questions.

Day 3: Ordering Numbers and Converting Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

6 and 7 20 minutes Putting numbers in order from smallest to largest (or vice versa) sounds very simple, but it's surprising how many students of this age struggle with it – especially when it comes to decimal numbers.

Day 4:Revision Sheets

8, 9 and 10 20 minutes These revision sheets cover the topics studied in this week's work, and students should use them to help highlight and strengthen any weaker areas before they attempt the Mini Test. If they come across any questions they don't understand in the revision sheets, students should take care to refer back to previous worksheets to help them figure out the right method to use to come up with their answer.

Day 5:Mini Test

2 pages 20minutes

We would suggest that Mini Test 10 should take 20 minutes.

NVR - Introducing Pointing

In NVR questions that include arrows, be careful to check which direction they’re pointing (i.e left or right). Also, if they are rotating, is it in clockwise or anticlockwise direction? Have a go at the questions below!

How many arrows are pointing LEFT?

How many MORE arrows are pointing LEFT than RIGHT?

How many figures are rotating ANT ICLOCKwiSE?

Ordering Numbers

You will often be asked to place numbers in order according to their size.

The method for doing this is the same for whole numbers and decimal numbers. You must compare each digit in turn starting with the largest value.

Example:

Which number is bigger: 14,947 or 14,965?

You can see that both of these numbers have fourteen thousands and nine hundreds, but when you look at the tens column, the second number has a larger digit so we know it is the bigger number.

Have a go at putting these numbers in order, from largest to smallest:

1. 2837 2384 3010 2345 3100 3105

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Ordering Decimal Numbers

Which number is bigger: 3.671 or 3.68?

You can see that both numbers have three units and six tenths, but because the second number has a larger digit in the hundredths column, we know it's the bigger number.

Now have a go at putting these decimal numbers in order, from smallest to largest:

2. 4.571 3.894 3.803 3.05 4.61 4.432

_______________________________________________________________________________

3. 13.4981 12.8 13.5 13.498 12.83 11.9

_______________________________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT!!!

Make sure you read the question carefully to see if you need to put the numbers in order from smallest to largest OR largest to smallest. Otherwise, you might do all the

working out properly but not get any marks for it!

Comparing Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Take a look at this table. It contains some of the most important conversions between fractions, decimals and percentages. You should try to learn all of these so that you can easily switch from one to another.

Did you notice how equivalent decimals and percentages look very similar? As percentages are always out of 100, you can easily swap between decimals and percentages by using the tenths and hundreths columns. (You will need to remember everything we've learnt about equivalent fractions and decimal place value.)

Take a look at these examples:

Write 0.56 as a percentage: 0.56 = ⁵⁶⁄₁₀₀ = 56%

Write 67% as a decimal: 67% = ⁶⁷⁄₁₀₀ = 0.67

Write 0.08 as a percentage: 0.08 = ⁸⁄₁₀₀ = 8%

Have a go at filling in the gaps in this table:

Fraction Decimal Percentage

¹⁄₄ 0.25 25%

¹⁄₂ 0.5 50%

³⁄₄ 0.75 75%

¹⁄₅ 0.2 20%

²⁄₅ 0.4 40%

¹⁄₁₀ 0.1 10%

Fraction Decimal Percentage

⁷⁄₁₀

⁴⁄₅

35%

¹⁹⁄₁₀₀

Finding an equivalent fraction with 100 as its denominator will help you here! Check the equivalent fractions worksheets from Week 6 if you've forgotten how.

Fractions, decimals and percentages are all different ways of saying the same thing! All of them refer to parts of a whole.

Conversion SnapPlayers: 2 -– 4

Instructions: Cut out the cards below (get an adult to help you if needed), then shuffle them all up really welland put them upside down in a pile on the table.

Each player takes it in turns to turn over a card and add it to the pile. If the card matches another card (i.e. it's the corresponding fraction, decimal or percentage) then the first player who shouts 'snap!' gets to take all the cards on the pile so far.

Keep going until all the cards have gone off the original pile. The winner is the player with the most cards.
