Significance

Mexico is independent with a real constitution so it can be an organized country.Other countries around the world recognize it as independent from Spain.

Mexico becomes afraid they will loose Texas.

Decree (Law) of April 6, 1830The terms of this law:

1. Eliminated (stopped) more slaves from entering Tejas

2. Stopped immigration from the U.S. (but not Mex. or Europe)

3. Taxed US imports (brought into Tejas)

What is one issue the Decree of 1830 did NOT change that the colonists might want changed?

Freedom of religion – there was none…yet!

The Law of April 6, 1830 threatened the prosperity (wealth) of the colonies in Tejas.

Convention of 1833Growing impatient colonists held another convention. In this convention they made the same requests as in 1832 …. BUT this time they wrote a constitution for a new Mexican state of …………….. TEXAS!

Austin’s Arrest• Austin takes the Convention’s proposals to Santa Anna but has to

wait too long

• Austin writes a letter to the colonists encouraging them to declare a

separate state from Coahuila.

• Santa Anna views this as treason and has SFA thrown in jail
