PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy

Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and

rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

+WORD+ God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

ACTS 2:1-21

1When the day of Pentecost had come, [the disciples] were all together in one place. 2And

suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire

house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue

rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this

sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the

native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are

speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and

Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors

from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear

them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one

another, “What does this mean?” 13But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new

wine.”

14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and

all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are

not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was

spoken through the prophet Joel: 17‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out

my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men

shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and

women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show

portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s

great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S SERMON

GOSPEL: JOHN 7:37-39 The holy gospel according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

37On the last day of the [Feast of Tabernacles], the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he

cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As

the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he

said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit,

because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY O Living Breath of God ELW 407

CREED

With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Uplifted by the promised hope of healing and resurrection, we join the people of God in all

times and places in praying for the church, the world, and all who are in need.

We call on your spirit of unity, giving thanks for our different vocations. Activate and utilize the

diverse gifts present in your church. Empower us by the Holy Spirit to be receptive to your

truth, that through us and our actions your love for all may be revealed. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

We call on your spirit of life, present in all living things, to breathe new life into this world. Send

healing to your creation, especially to despoiled environments and to the impoverished

communities who bear the brunt of humanity’s exploitations. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

We call on your spirit of righteousness. Wherever we as a people are divided, unite us. Wherever

we are prideful, humble us. Give each one of us a heart for justice and empathy. Help us to

better understand and deeply feel in our souls the pain of communities of color, especially in the

aftermath of the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Give us a vision

of a just society for all, a knowledge of what such a society requires of us, and then lead us by

your Spirit to build it hand in hand with others. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

We call on your spirit of healing. Bless nurses, doctors, midwives, chaplains, counselors,

therapists, hospice workers, and first responders as they care for those in need. We pray for all

who long for comfort (especially). Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

We call on your spirit of friendship. May we be a community that offers true welcome to those

who visit us during worship and to those we encounter in our daily lives. Surprise us daily with

unexpected grace, that we rejoice in every blessing you send. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

With bold confidence in your love, almighty God, we place all for whom we pray into your

eternal care; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you. [flash headlights]

The people may greet one another with signs of Christ’s peace: waves, shouts of “Peace be with you,” horn honks, etc.

+MEAL+ God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

Let us pray.

Merciful God, our ordinary gifts seem small for such a celebration, but you make of them an

abundance, just as you do with our lives. Feed us again at this table for service in your name, in

the strength of the risen Christ.

Amen.

DIALOGUE

PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,

through our Savior Jesus Christ.

Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection,

you pour out the fire of your Spirit,

uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue.

And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection,

with earth and sea and all their creatures,

and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim,

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,

who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,

who preached good news to the poor,

and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,

we await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,

and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food,

the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;

to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,

be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

11

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Thanks be to God!

DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION

The fullness of the body and blood of Christ are present in each element of this meal. Although we are not

sharing of wine today out of an abundance of caution, we receive all the promises shared in this holy meal.

The occupants of each vehicle are asked to break and share the bread with one another, saying, “The body of

Christ given for you,” and an appropriate response is, “Amen.” If you are the sole occupant of the vehicle, the

pastors’ words are meant for you.

There are certain practices for unconsumed yet consecrated bread. Eating it is the preferred practice, but an

alternative is to break it into smaller pieces and spread it among vegetation for birds and animals to consume.
