Gadgets might come in handy when you re atwork (to-do list, currency converter, calendar), atschool (calculator, Wikipedia, translation tool), orjust passing time (news, blogs, games). You canadd gadgets you like to iGoogle and, if you have GoogleDesktop installed, you can also add gadgets toyour computers desktop. : http://www.google.com/webmasters/gadgets/ 3. Widget Yahoo Yahoo! Widgets are small, specific applications thatyou can run on your Windows or Mac OS desktop. Wekeep them small and specific for convenience andperformance reasons. Because they are so small,Widgets need another application to run. Its theYahoo! Widget application, and you can downloadthe application and a starter set of Widgets to yourPC or Mac from widgets.yahoo.com. A Widget can do almost anything from displaying aweather forecast to playing a game. Widgetsgenerally sit on your desktop and dont look likeapplications as were used to seeing them in astandard window. Widgets wordpress.com 7. Widget of Wordpress Widget is a fancy word for tools orcontent that you can add, arrange,and remove from the sidebar(s) ofyour blog. Widgets make it easy to customizethe content of your sidebar(s). Youcan learn more about the widgets weoffer by checking out the Relatedlinks on the right. 8. Gadget / Widget 1. 2. 3. Gadget / Widget 9. You can access your widgets from theAppearance -> Widgets screen in your Dashboard. 10. Adding Widgets To add a widget, drag the widget from the AvailableWidgets or Inactive Widgets area on the left into theSidebar area on the right. When you see a dashedline appear, you can drop the widget into place. 11. Configuring Widgets Each widget has configurationoptions. To make changes to a widgetin the sidebar, click on the triangle onthe right side. 12. Configuring Widgets This will open up the options for the widget.Each widget will be different. Here is anexample of the Archives widget. After you have have configured the widget, clickthe Save button. Clicking the Close link willminimize the configuration options again. 13. Removing Widgets If you would like to remove a widgetfrom the sidebar, click the Delete linkin the configuration options as showabove. 14. Widgets CalendarWidget Heres what the Calendar Widget looks likewhen activated on a blog sidebar: Settings:Once you add the widget to yoursidebar from Appearance -> Widgets, youllsee that the widget settings look like this: 15. Widgets Blog StatsWidget The Blog Stats Widget displays the total number of views to your blog (not including your own views). Its a nice way of showing off how popular your blog is. Heres an example what it looks like when its activated on a blog sidebar: 16. Settings Once you add the widget to your sidebar from Appearance -> Widgets, youll see that the widget settings look like this: Title: Set the title to use above the blog stats count. (i.e. Stats, Traffic Love) 123,45: Set the word(s) to use along with the number. hits and views are popular choices, but feel free to get creative and make up your own. 17. Widgets Categories Widget The Categories Widget organizes your posts by category in your blogs sidebar. This can be handy for readers who want to find more of your posts about certain topics. Heres what it looks like when its activated on a blog sidebar: 18. Once you add the widget to your sidebar fromAppearance -> Widgets, youll see that the widget settingslook like this: Title Sets the title that will display above thecategories in the sidebar. (i.e. Categories) 19. Show as dropdown Check this box to display thecategories in a drop down menu rather than as a list. This is handy if you want to save space or have a lot of categories. 20. Show post counts If this box is checked, the the totalnumber of published posts for that particular category will be displayed next to the link. You can show post countswith both the list and dropdown menu formats. 21. Show hierarchy If you have parent and child categories(subcategories within main categories) you can choose to display the hierarchy (pictured below) or just leave the list flat, without indicating which subcategories fit inside your main categories (pictured above). You can show category hierarchies with both the list and dropdown menu formats. 22. Category Order If you need to show your categories in a certain order, you can build a Custom Menu then adding a Custom Menu Widget instead.
