Surabaya city is located in East Java Island, Indonesia. One hour y y ,flight from Jakarta, and four hours from Hong Kong.
Possessing the status as the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia, Surabaya is the capital and the central administration of
East Java Province.
It has a strategic role as a gateway to East Indonesia and it has grown as a center for trade and industry services in Indonesia.

� Initiation award from community such as green and clean campaign (freedom fromwaste)
The campaign that was started since 2005, successfully motivated many communities to clean up and reduce waste by practicing waste segregation p y p g g gand composting. In 2008 almost 20% of communities participated in the campaign.
Today the award ceremony is a major event in the city. It was product of collaboration between local government, NGO and private sector, including mass media.
From this event eventually it could create eco-tourism in several sub-district in Surabaya.

Currently the program has been combined with urban farming program, an activity to assist the poor with urban farming efforts, such as planting small yard with fruits and vegetable as well as breeding livestock or fish in a small artificial fish pond.

By promoting the model, including actively promoting 3 R program and involving communities, NGOs and private companies, the city of Surabaya achieved more than 20% in waste generation reduction over y ga period of 4 years (from 1,500 tonnes a day in 2004 to 1,300 tonnes on avarage in 2007 and 1,150 tonnes in 2008).
