    The Earl and Sarah Shostrom family, DesMoines, have made a major donation for the gazebo inDayton. The Shostrom Estate contributed $10,000 toDayton. Of that amount, the Dayton City Council ap-proved $8,000 for the Cadwell Park gazebo project and$2,000 for the Veteran’s Park. Earl Shostrom was a graduate of Dayton HighSchool and always attended the Dayton Alumni banquet.Earl passed away several years ago. A plaque was recently placed in the DaytonCommunity Center by Harold Rentschler honoring Earland his wife Sarah for the gift to the gazebo. The plaque reads as follows: “The Caldwell Park gazebowas made possible by a generous giftfrom Earl and Sarah Shostrom.” Earl R. Shostrom, 89,died at the age of 89 peacefullyat home in Urbandale on Mon-day, January 10, 2011. Burialwas in the Dayton cemetery.He was preceded in death byhis wife Sarah in 2007.     Dayton, to Russell and Elvina Shostrom. He graduatedfrom Dayton High School in 1939 and attended the firstannual American Legion Iowa Boys State.

    His studies at the University of Iowa were inter-rupted in 1943 when he was called up to the 358th ArmyInfantry Regiment of the 90th Division. Earl landed atUtah Beach several days after the Normandy Invasionand was wounded and awarded five medals.

    Earl married Sarah Homeier, also of Dayton, onNovember 19, 1944. After Earl completed law school,they moved to Des Moines in 1947 when Earl became anassistant attorney general for the state of Iowa. He settledinto a lifetime career at Principal Financial as a corporateinsurance attorney. Earl and Sarah were members of Al-dersgate United Methodist Church and supporters of Ur-bandale High School, the University of Iowa, and Drake

    Lehigh River Daysfeatures more freeentertainment

    June 17, 18, 19. . . Lehigh River Days will be held on June 17, 18and 19th this year. There is a lot of free entertainmentthis year. We are bringing back the log roll and will havea softball tournament. There is also a parade , car show,flea market, mud and sand volleyball, kids games as wellas two free street dances.

    The Ghostriders band will play Friday night andthe Road Toast band will play Saturday night. The Cruise To The Valley Car Show will beheld on Saturday, the 18th from 11 -2 on main street dur-ing Lehigh River Days. There will be a $50 cash prizeas well as others prizes. There is no entry fee.
