Dear Friends,

CKS is based in Cambodia, but it has a history of offering exceptional trips for small groups: Burgundy, in 2014, will be repeated in April, 2015; Borobodur and Bali will take us to these exotic and fascinating sites in August of that year; and the culture and cuisine of Alsace and Lorraine will be the focus of our September travel.

These two fascinating but dissimilar provinces have both had a dramatic past. Alsace, split into many small feudal areas, joined France in the 1660s. Lorraine was an independent duchy until 1736, when it became French. Both have spectacular architecture; each has its own gastronomical tradition. Starting in Strasbourg, with its great Gothic cathedral and the 18th-century palace which houses its museums, we will drive along the scenic wine route to Colmar. There we will see the famous Grünewald altarpiece, that extraor-dinary expression of 16th-century German Expressionism. A highlight of the day will be lunch at the famous Auberge de l’Ill. The following day, contemporary architecture will be the focus as we visit the newly opened Centre Pompidou in Metz.

Nothing could be more different from that bold and startling building than the graceful harmony of the 18th-century Place Stanislas in Nancy. Art Nouveau will be the topic as we visit its famous museum, but so will the excellent collection of Old Masters; and, of course, we will dine on the best of Lorraine cuisine.

Less visited, but charming and full of appeal, is Luxembourg and we will conclude our trip in the capital of this tiny Grand Duchy. It, too, blends an old-fashioned center with the MUDAM museum designed by I.M. Pei.

Once again, gastronomic pleasures will enhance the many cultural masterpieces offered us by both provinces.

I look forward to seeing you on this trip.

Cordially,
