  • 5Introduction

W hen I was teaching, my students contin-ually begged me to give them geomet-ric design worksheets to color. I threwup my hands, lamenting that they spent hours col-oring designs but wouldnt spend 15 minutes mem-orizing basic math facts. It was Adam who made thisbrilliant remark: Why doesnt someone makedesigns with math facts in them? Then you couldbe sure wed learn them! This book is for all ofyour students, like Adam, who are fascinated by artand geometric design and beg for more.

How to Use This BookThere are three different types of design activitiesin this book. Teaching tips for each type follow:

Designs to Color (pages 824) are geometricshapes with basic addition, subtraction, multiplica-tion, and division problems inside them. Studentssolve the problems, thencolor the shapes basedon the answers. The fin-ished designs will makea perfect addition toyour math learning cen-ter or bulletin board. For these designs, stu-dents need a basic eight-pack of crayons orcolored pencils. Tell stu-dents to solve all of theproblems before theystart coloring.

In the section Designs to Create (pages 2542),students also solve addition, subtraction, multipli-cation, and divisionproblems. Then theydraw straight lines toconnect dots beside theproblems to the dotsbeside their answers. When all of the dotshave been connected, beautiful line designsemerge that are suitablefor framing. For thesedesigns, students need a

ruler, a sharp pencil, and an eraser. Again, encourage students to solve all of the problemsbefore they start drawing. Tell them to work care-fully, as many activities have more answers thanproblems to be solved.

Designs to Construct (pages 4461) are funand easy to make. Students complete addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division prob-lems, then color the shapes based on the answers. After coloring the pattern, students simply cut itout, then fold and tape it together. (Easy assemblyhow-tos are provided on page 43). For thesedesigns, students needa basic eight-pack ofcrayons or colored pen-cils, scissors, and tape. The finished productsare colorful three-dimensional designsthat can be hung onmobiles, used as holi-day ornaments, orgiven as gifts.

Note: Its not neces-sary for second andthird graders to learn the names for complex geo-metric shapes. But you will no doubt have somestudents who want to learn these technical defini-tions. Youll find the term for each constructionlisted on page 43.

To help you use this book along with yourmath curriculum, the chart on pages 67 orga-nizes the activities by skill area and level. You cansee at a glance all of the activities that focus on aspecific math skillfor example, subtraction oftwo-digit numbers without regrouping.

Many of the activity pages include a Taking ItFurther problem. These problems are designed tochallenge students by allowing them to apply themath operation used to complete the main designactivity. Answers to these problems can be foundon pages 6264.

Dont let students stop with these activities.Invite them to create their own designs for theirclassmates to color, create, and construct!
