SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: Arizona’s offense is turning heads this year, with the Wildcats averaging more than eight runs per game. Eight players, with at least 55 at bats, are hitting .300 or better. Joey Rickard has an impressive .500 average, while Bryce Ortega and Cole Frenzel are hitting .414 and .390, respec-tively. Arizona is only giving up 3.25 runs per game. Both teams have played Long Beach State this season. USF lost to the Dirtbags 5-4 and Arizona won 9-1 and 7-1 before dropping a 2-1 game. The Wildcats have averaged 35 wins a season in the past nine years under coach Andy Lopez. LAST TIME VS. ARIZONA: This is the first time the two programs will play since the 2000 season. Arizona won the three-game series played January 28-30, 2000 by scores of 4-3 and 21-7 before losing the third game 10-16.

SCOUTING THE BEARS: This is first of two games between Cal and USF this season. The Dons and Bears both played in the Cal Baseball Classic this past weekend, but did not face one another. Cal enters the game in the midst of a four-game win streak, with three of its losses coming at the USD Tournament and the fourth against Stanford 3-2. The Bears are averaging nearly seven runs a game with five players totaling 30 at bats or more with a .300 or better bat-ting average. Sophomores Tony Renda and Mitch Delfino are hitting an impres-sive .406 and .394, while senior Austin Booker sits at a .390 batting average.

LAST TIME VS. CALIFORNIA: USF won the last meeting 6-1 at then-No. 25 Cal on May 18, 2010. Jordan Remer claimed the win on the mound for the Dons, giving up just one run on three hits in 7.2 innings of work.

Page 3: DBC_Cal_Arizona - Weekly Release #5

START YOUR ENGINES: Senior left-hander Matt Lujan started his 43rd career game against UCSB on March 11 to make him second in career starts for the Dons. Four more starts will move him to the top of the list.

WALK THIS WAY: The Dons are second in the West Coast Conference in walks by just one walk, having totaled 55 free passes this season. A total of 12 different players have drawn walks with Pete Lavin leading the way (13) and Connor Bernatz and Stephen Yarrow drawing 10 and eight, respectively.

SAVE THAT GAME BALL: Two USF pitchers earned their first collegiate wins on the mound against UC Davis. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Zimmer earned his victory in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 27 after pitching seven innings and giving up just two runs on six hits, while striking out eight. Later that afternoon, freshman right-hander Alex Balog was a winner after throwing a hitless seventh inning.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Senior third baseman Stephen Yarrow cracked USF’s top 10 all-time RBI list after collecting three RBIs in the Dons’ 8-4 win against UC Davis. He has totaled 110 thus far in his career and needs just 14 more to move into the top five all-time.

WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons.

FIRST TIME OUT: Six players made their career debuts for the Green and Gold during the UCLA series: transfers Tom Barry, Aritz Garcia, Ted LeMasters and freshmen Alex Balog, Ben Graff and Jordan Haseltine.

SAFE AT FIRST: Senior catcher Travis Higgs gets credit for the first hit of the 2011 season. His single to leftfield came during the fifth inning of the Dons’ first game of the season against UCLA.

RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: Head coach Nino Giarratano is just seven wins away from collecting his 350th victory at USF. Another 13 West Coast Conference wins would give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: Boyd’s World, a national collegiate baseball website, ranks the Dons’ non-conference schedule as the seventh most difficult in the country. It lists USF’s overall schedule as 24th toughest in the nation.

CLOSE TO HOME: USF plays 22 of its 55 games at Bendetti Diamond this season, with another seven games taking place at neutral sites. The Dons will play 31 of their 55 games within 84 miles of the USF campus. Four of the team’s game will take place at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.

STANDING TALL: The Dons feature not only a hard-throwing and crafty pitching staff, but a physically imposing one as well. USF boasts 12 pitchers that stand 6-foot-2 or taller and four that are 6-foot-5 or taller.

VOTE GETTERS: The Dons play four games on the road this week against ranked opponents. USF travels to No. 15 California on March 16 and then plays a three-game series against No. 11 Arizona on March 19-21. USF has already played three games this season against a top 25 team, facing then No. 1 UCLA in a three-game series to open the season.

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME: USF will play its fourth consecutive game at AT&T Park, home of the defending world champion San Francisco Giants. The Dons made themselves home in the Giants dugout for all three games in the Cal Baseball Classic and will call that dugout home again during the Dante Benedetti Classic.

TEAM EFFORT: The Dons’ pitching staff boasts the lowest ERA in the West Coast Conference (3.01). USF has used 13 different pitchers this season, with 12 having made at least two appearances.

KEEPING UP HIS APPEARANCES: Senior left-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold made two trips to the mound during the Cal Baseball Classic. That moved him into sole possession of second place in all-time appearances in USF baseball program history. He needs just three more appearances to become the all-time leader.

TOPPING THE CHARTS: Senior Pete Lavin leads the West Coast Conference in batting average, (.383), walks (13), stolen bases (10) and is second in hits (21). Junior Adam Clear is tied for No. 8 with a .333 batting average.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: San Francisco has committed just five errors in 15 games this season and leads the West Coast Conference with a .991 fielding percentage. Starting infielders Nik Balog, Jason Mahood, Adam Clear and Stephen Yarrow have yet to commit an error.

CUTTING IT CLOSE: Eight of the Dons’ 15 games this season have been decided by two or fewer runs. USF’s biggest loss this season came by only four runs.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their first extra inning win of the season on March 3 against Lamar at the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas. Junior Nik Balog’s RBI single in the ninth sent the game into extra innings. Connor Bernatz scored in the top of the 11th after Mason Morioka reached on a fielding error and then Balog doubled to right center to score an insurance run. The Dons played in just three extra inning games last season and have already played in two in 2011.

HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: Junior Ted LeMasters hit the Dons’ first home run of the season against New Mexico State at the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas. That means it’s time to start donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page.
