TRANSCRIPT

Who is Misty Love? A music maverick in her own rights, Misty Love

has stood the test of time in life and the music industry. Born in

Tallahassee, Florida as Deloris Davis, Misty was a born singer. Her

ambition to sing was fueled by her innate ability to harmonize with

the songs she heard on the radio in the 60s. After doing the standard

“pay your dues” shows with many Detroit based groups, Misty got a

break by replacing Caroline Crawford the lead singer of the pop 70s

group Bohannon. The

group had a major hit

song that revolutionized the disco era title “Let’s

Start The Dance”.

After her stint with Bohannon,

she went back to Detroit and

started performing with

virtually all of the great

musicians and artists on the

Detroit scene, namely

keyboard great Rudy Robinson.

Rudy was the music director and right hand man

for Mike Hank’s Detroit Based record label D-Town; he taught Love the ins and outs of the

fine-tuning she needed in the music industry. In the late 90s Misty had a chance encounter

with an up and coming Detroit rapper by the name of Robert James Ritchie from Romeo,

Michigan. That artist would later become international recording artist Kid Rock. She and

Kid traveled in station wagons the back woods of Michigan and Ohio

performing to what would be future fans of the artist. Love performed

and recorded in Kid’s band the Brown Truckers with one of Detroit’s

most talented vocalist Shirley Hayden (Lead singer of the Parlett). The

result was Love participating in the

creation of Kid’s smash 1998 hit

album “Devil Without A Cause”,

which garnered her 10 Diamond, 6

Platinum, and 1 Gold record for her collection.

Throughout the years, Love has done a multitude of things

to enhance her career goals. She is one of the background

singers in the Grammy Award winning 2002 hit docufilm

“Standing In The Shadows Of Motown” that talked about the Motown musicians apply known

as the Funk Brothers.

She sung backup as a Crystals for LA LA Brooke the former lead singer of the group, on the ‘My

Music’ PBS Series. Her career continues to expand as the producer of numerous productions

“The Tribute To Kim Weston”, “The Tribute To Mary Wells”, and “Tribute To The Motown

Divas” all of which are co-produced by the Motown Alumni Association.

She is the founder of ‘Misty Love and the Motown Sound’ band that travels the country

performing for corporations, and concerts.

Misty is the producer of the second largest award music award show in the city of Detroit. The

Detroit Black Music Awards is an annual event honoring Detroit’s most talented and major

Black artists in the metro Detroit area. For the last 4 years this event has colminated into the

premier essence of class and glamour. Detroiters flock to see and be seen for this event. The

Black tie affair is the crowning jewel in Detroit’s music scene. Partnering up with Billy Wilson

President of the Motown Alumni Association, Love and Wilson have joining forces for 4 years.

“I’m proud to have partnered with Misty” said Billy Wilson. “She has a vision on what she

wants to do, and my job is to help to make that vision happen… we are a good team” he said.

In a recent conversation with Love she said “I lived in Vegas for a while, and wanted to come

home to honor and give flowers to the artists in Detroit while they were living; if they are dead

its to late to show our appreciation. That’s why I produced the Detroit Black Music Awards.”

State legislatures asked to stop impostor bands

Some groups use famous names, but contain no original musicians

By SUSAN HAIGH (LA Times) Retrieved from the (Truthinmusic.org website)

HARTFORD, Conn. - Doo-wop and rock ’n roll

legends are asking lawmakers across the

country to stop performances by some not-so-

great pretenders.

There are hundreds of bands touring the

country these days claiming to be The Platters,

the Drifters, the Coasters or some other group

from the ’50s and ’60s, according to the Vocal

Group Hall of Fame in Sharon, Pa.

Most of them have no ties to the original

artists.

Jon "Bowzer" Bauman, formerly of Sha Na Na,

strikes his signature pose. Bauman and Connecticut state House Majority Leader Christopher G. Donovan, D-Meriden,

were unveiling proposed legislation to protect the rights of performers and consumers. The "Truth In Music" bill would

restrict bogus musical or singing groups from capitalizing on the names of recognizable bands.

“They undercut the legacy of those artists by pretending to be them,” said Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, former member of the

oldies band Sha Na Na and head of the hall’s Truth in Music Committee.

“Almost worst of all is the way in which they steal the applause from the great veterans and pioneers that crafted rock

’n’ roll music back in the 50s and early 60s,” he said.

The Hall of Fame is working with numerous states to pass “Truth in Music” legislation. It would allow state attorneys

general to stop an impostor band performance with an injunction and seek civil penalties of up to $15,000 against

impostor bands and those who promote them.

Earlier this week, Pennsylvania’s governor signed a bill into law. South Carolina and North Dakota now have comparable

laws on the books. Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Nevada and

Missouri are debating the issue or are expected to take it up soon.

To be considered bona fide under the legislation, a band must include at least one member of the original recording

group. Tribute bands would not be affected.

Knockoffs hurt original artists

Carl Gardner, 77, the last surviving member of The Coasters, said he hopes all 50 states pass such laws and he can get his

livelihood back.

“If they can get every state in the union to sign these papers, they’ll never be able to work again and I’ll be able to get all

my jobs back,” said Gardner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “They’ve cut into my business awfully bad and

everybody who is affiliated, it hurts everybody.”

Gardner, who is semiretired, said he typically charges $10,000 a gig. He said the phony Coasters charge only $1,000 and

often perform badly — which he said tarnishes his reputation.

Maxine Porter, longtime manager for Bill Pinkney, the last surviving original member of The Drifters, estimates Pinkney

has spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to fight the impostors. But, she said, every time one is shut down, another

one pops onto the scene.

She also said the knockoffs have hurt Pinkney’s earning potential. The 80-year-old member of the Rock and Roll Hall of

Fame still performs.

Mary Wilson, an original member of the Supremes, said she knows of some original acts that can’t get hired in Las

Vegas. The venues would rather hire the knockoff bands because they’re less expensive, she said.

“They’re taking our history but they don’t have our DNA,” she said. “It really is a form of identity theft. It really is.”

Fake singing groups and artists have been a problem for decades. Pennsylvania Senator Bob Robbins and a team of

other Senators sponsored a Senate hearing in 2005 on the controlled monitoring of fake groups in Pennsylvania. This Bill

led to other states adopting the bill, particularly in the state of Nevada. Here is the Bill in its entirety.

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

SENATE BILL

No. 929 Session of 2005

INTRODUCED BY ROBBINS, M. WHITE, BOSCOLA, ERICKSON, WOZNIAK, LEMMOND, PILEGGI, COSTA, RAFFERTY, D.

Section 1. Short title.

This act shall be known and may be cited as the Truth in Music Advertising Act.

Section 2. Definitions.

The following words and phrases when used in this act shall have the meanings given to them in this section unless the

released a commercial sound recording under that name.

"Recording group." A vocal or instrumental group at least one of whose members has previously released a commercial

sound recording under that group's name and in which the member or members have a legal right by virtue of use or

operation under the group name without having abandoned the name or affiliation with the group.

"Sound recording." A work that results from the fixation on a material object of a series of musical, spoken or other

sounds regardless of the nature of the material object, such as a disk, tape or other phono-record, in which the sounds

are embodied.

Section 3. Production.

It shall be unlawful for any person to advertise or conduct a live musical performance or production in this

Commonwealth

through the use of a false, deceptive or misleading affiliation, connection or association between a performing group

and a

recording group. This section does not apply if any of the following apply:

(1) The performing group is the authorized registrant and owner of a Federal service mark for that group registered in

the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

use or operation under the group name without having abandoned the name or affiliation with the group.

(3) The live musical performance or production is identified in all advertising and promotion as a salute or tribute.

(4) The advertising does not relate to a live musical performance or production taking place in this Commonwealth.

(5) The performance or production is expressly authorized by the recording group.

Section 4. Restraining prohibited acts.

(a) Injunction.--Whenever the Attorney General or a district attorney has reason to believe that any person is advertising

or

conducting or is about to advertise or conduct a live musical performance or production in violation of section 3 and that

proceedings would be in the public interest, the Attorney General or district attorney may bring an action in the name of

the Commonwealth against the person to restrain by temporary or permanent injunction that practice.

(b) Payment of costs and restitution.--Whenever any court issues a permanent injunction to restrain and prevent

violations of this act as authorized in subsection (a), the court may in its discretion direct that the defendant restore to

any person

in interest any moneys or property, real or personal, which may have been acquired by means of any violation of this

act, under

terms and conditions to be established by the court.

Section 5. Penalty.

A person who violates section 3 is liable to the Commonwealth for a civil penalty of not less than $5,000 nor more than

Detroit’s homegrown artist Yvette Meadows is climbing the charts in the UK; herself titled

album Yvette Meadows “Simply Me” has broken the Top 20 album charts and resting at #12.

However, four of the songs on the recording are breaking the UK scene, and the main single

“Face To Face” is the rising song getting more listening time. The following is her bio… enjoy!

Don’t call Yvette Meadows a “girl singer or musician.” Call her instead a conjurer of musical magic, a talented songstress, pianist and writer who transforms mere notes into scintillating journeys of the soul. At its simplest, Ms. Meadows’ music is a lesson in melodic artistry. At its most powerful, a spiritual gift transcends all boundaries.

Born into a large musical family of seven in Detroit, Michigan, Ms.Meadows started playing piano at

age 5 and gave her first performance at age 6 singing lead for her family’s group the Meadowlarks. By the time she was 13, she had come to love all kinds of music, from jazz and R&B, to big band and Broadway. As she matured, her talents extended beyond singing to songwriting, teaching, producing and serving as a musical consultant for theater productions. Ms. Meadows’ claim to popularity has been her ability to run the gamut of music from Broadway hits to Jazz. She has shared the stage with such named artists as Norman Brown, Joe Sample, Art Porter, Jean Carne, Howard Hewitt and The Mary Jane Girls.

In 2011 her thoughts about love, loss and spiritual rebirth soon turned into a journey of creating the songs for her newly-released CD titled “SIMPLY ME” on the independent Beatmob Productions label, which is now ranked in the top 10 on the Soul Charts in the United Kingdom. The disc offers a tuneful

collection of soul, R&B, jazz-tinged ballads and up-tempo tracks that place Meadows squarely among “Face to Face,” for instance, the first single release from the CD, is a catchy lament about the problems and

frustrations of a long-distance relationship. “I thought it important to look at the ups and downs of current technology, and how it applies to our lives, specifically love relationships. My point is that technology is great for lots of things, but when it comes to love, you lose a certain “personal touch” when you aren’t with that person face to face.”

Ms. Meadows wrote and arranged all the songs on SIMPLY ME CD, the one exception being a jazzy cover version of Todd

Rundgren's "Hello It’s Me. “Music has always been my sustenance,” says the elegant Ms. Meadows. “In writing this CD it gave me the freedom to express who I really am. It’s been an honor to hear the comparisons to top artists such as Maysa, Phyllis Hymen and Anita Baker, since those were some of the artists that I’ve covered in my career. However, it was time for me to just be me, thus the title of the CD “Simply Me”.

She formed her own 7-piece band of talented musicians and singers called “The Family” comprised of bassist Al Gordon, drummer Dionna Marie Beavers, guitarist Theodis (Ted) Callen, keyboardist Carmen Parks and backup singers Nicole Danielle, Fayvian Watts and Maurice Jacobs. Since then Meadows has continued to move forward, getting enthusiastic praise from longtime fans that have always followed her career as well as a growing contingent of new fans enchanted by her sexy, fresh sound.

Of what she hopes for her career now that the CD is out, she says “My favorite saying at the end of my performances is “I wish you love”. My hope is that when people listen to my music, it will give them a sense of hope and understanding that love is real and it exists even when we see so much negative around us. I hope my listeners can feel my sincerity and truth in who I am and the messages that I bring. I want people to understand that yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not promised and that we should ALL live for today and make it the best that we can. And, who knows what I’ll do next…maybe I’ll be a comedienne!

Diana Lewis a veteran anchor TV commentator and journalist have retired from the

daily journals of news reporting on Channel 7 in Detroit. Her historic journey has

taken her full circle, from the days of being the only Black woman of the 70s trying to

make it in a world predominantly filled with males, to a beloved household name in

the Detroit metro area and around the world. Her uncanny skill to deliver the news

preceded her beauty both inside and out; but what the world seen on the outside

allowed everyone to see the candor and class she exuded from the inside. “She was

one of the recipients that were honored with a ‘Who’s Who In Detroit’ Award along

with myself a few years ago,” said Billy Wilson of the Motown Alumni Association. “I

don’t get star struck very often, but being an alumni along with her and Al Allen

(news commentator) at the same function was a giant thing for me, I was honored.”

Diana Lewis is one of the world’s giants in the business of journalism; we will miss her

in Detroit.

Actually, the answer to that question is, YES. Motown had such a grip on the music

dynamics in the Motor City that everyone tried to either imitate, duplicate, model

and mold their version of the music conglomerate, usually with disastrous out

comes. Today’s Detroit music scene is multi complex, and varies throughout the

city. This generation is paying no attention to the Motown banner, and has set a

tone of their own.

The areas are wide open in the Motor city. You can head uptown (Woodward area)

and find rock based music, downtown for jazz & rap, all the casinos will give you

dance and pop music, in the Paradise Valley area you can find hip hop and

alternative. Most clubs have popped up within the last 5 years that are open to a

wide genre of music. Not since Motown has, Detroit had more independent record

companies and production companies in such a close proximity. The various scenes

are so pronounced that the production companies bring their own fans, their own

engineers, and even their own hype person.

With the advent of the Detroit Music Awards, Detroit artists developed their own

Grammy like aura. The people on the board are the who’s who of the music

industry in Detroit.

The second largest award show is the Detroit Black Music Awards. The various

genre of music in the Black community has taken off to the skies namely rap, hip-

hop, R&B, jazz, blues, neo-soul, and reggae. This glamour fest is the highlight of

Black music in the city. “I created this event to give artists their flowers while they

are still alive” said Misty Love the producer of the show.

One of the largest bodies of music in the city is Techno music. Born in the Motor

city the Techno-fest brings in millions of dollars from all over the country. Various

DJs and MCs invade Harts Plaza to show off their skills at this enormous affair.

This does not include the Arts, Beats, and Eats Festival or the new Paradise Festival

that was downtown.

Detroit is alive and taking on the music scene in only a manner Detroit can do.
