Dear Principals and Teachers,
We are pleased to provide you with a selection of high-quality arts and humanities experiences to benefit students from across Washington, DC.
In these pages you can plan some of the highlights of the academic year, making a lasting impression on your students, some of whom will be experiencing professional theater and museum arts exhibitions for the very first time.
We provide arts experiences to thousands of students each year with a total of more than 350,000 students taking field trips through Arts for Every Student (AFES) since our founding. We are entering our 13th year of providing free transportation and tickets to DC public and chartered public school students and are looking forward to growing our stellar roster of members; adding to our listing of arts experiences; and delivering services to more students.
We invite you to explore our catalogue featuring a wide variety of arts opportunities for students of all ages. Explore the many wonderful arts institutions which offer spectacular arts experiences that will advance your curriculum and readily map to standards and to the Teaching and Learning Framework.
Washington, DC, is home to some of the greatest arts institutions in the world and each DC student studying Shakespeare should see it acted on the stage through a Shakespeare Theatre Company production at the Harman Center for the Arts; and each DC student studying U.S. History should have the chance to see the Star-Spangled Banner on display at the National Museum of American History. These are just two examples of how curriculum can become dynamic and engaging through connecting to the significant resources here in our backyard.
We are committed to ensuring all students have access to the arts and humanities, because we believe arts access leads to student success.

WHAT IS THE DC ARTS AND HUMANITIES EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE? The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative works to strengthen and promote the arts and humanities as basic and integral to a high-quality education for all students in DC public and chartered public schools. Comprised of more than 60 arts and cultural organizations, DC Collaborative initiatives include: Arts for Every Student, Professional Development for Teachers and Arts Educators, and the Arts Education Initiative.
WHAT IS ARTS FOR EVERY STUDENT? Arts for Every Student provides increased access for all DC public and charter school students to attend arts and cultural events offered by our member providers. Through this program, DC public and charter schools are eligible for free tickets and transportation to local cultural events, supported by the DC Collaborative. Schools with PreK-K students may select a free in-school performance as an alternative to a trip to a cultural venue.
Professional Development workshops also are offered through the DC Collaborative member providers to DC public and chartered public school teachers. These workshops offer teachers the opportunity to learn innovative ways to invigorate classroom instruction by using arts techniques. Teachers work with experienced arts educators to learn to use dance, music, theater, visual arts, and the humanities to teach academic lessons and address State Learning Standards. Many Professional Development Workshops are also aligned with the Teaching and Learning Framework for DCPS teachers.
AFES SCHOOL PARTNER RESPONSIBILITIES Participation in the AFES program is easy! Here’s a quick snap-shot of what’s expected from partner schools: • Designate a Key Communicator, to serve as
the main contact for the school for the AFES program.
• Attend the AFES School Orientation at the beginning of the school year.
• Register with the AFES Online Registration system, www.dccollaborative.org.
• Select and attend AFES Events. • Complete event evaluations. • Encourage colleagues to integrate the arts
and humanities into their classrooms and schools!

Introduction to AFES Preview Catalogue
To make your experience with the AFES Online Registration system easier, we’ve created this preview guide of event offerings at cultural organizations, and professional development workshops for teachers. If you are the Key Communicator for your school, please feel free to print multiple copies and distribute to colleagues in your school building. This will help your colleagues select a trip that best fits their grade grouping’s learning goals and plans for year.
HOW TO USE THIS PREVIEW CATALOGUE: For the Arts for Every Student program, the first page of this guide lists all the events by grade grouping in a grid, with corresponding curriculum ties. This grid is a helpful tool to match up classroom learning with a selected event. For the remainder of the guide, the AFES events are listed by grade grouping. Each event will consist of a brief description of the event, date(s) offered, time(s), location, and curriculum ties.
Once choices have been made for all grade groupings, the Key Communicator should log on to the AFES Online Registration system, www.dccollaborative. org, to reserve tickets. A step-by-step instruction as to how to reserve tickets for your school is included in the AFES School Handbook. If you have not yet received your copy of the AFES School Handbook, please contact our office.

TRIP CANCELLATION POLICY
• Trips must be cancelled 30 days in advance.
• If 30 days in advance, Key Communicators must cancel trips using the AFES Online Registration system. Please refer to the AFES School Handbook for the step-by-step process.
• If you must cancel less than 30 days in advance, you must do so IN WRITING. Your school will be invoiced for the cost of the tickets and any transportation fees incurred.
• Phone calls will not be honored for trip cancellations.
TICKET REDUCTION POLICY
• Key Communicators may reduce ticket numbers using the AFES Online Registration System more than 30 days in advance of an event.
• Please refer to the AFES School Handbook for the step-by-step process to reduce ticket numbers 30 days in advance.
• Less than 30 days in advance, schools must notify our office of ticket reductions of 10 or more tickets IN WRITING, or be billed for the cost of the unused tickets and transportation.
• Phone calls will not be honored for ticket reductions.

Curriculum Connections Chart: AFES Events Arts for Every Student programs are offered to expand students’ and teachers’ understanding of the arts and to reinforce classroom curricula. These events also assist in the development of critical thinking skills and an understanding of the creative process. The chart below indicates the ways these selected events connect to classroom curricula.

ALADDIN’S LUCK Presented by: Imagination Stage The clever street urchin Aladdin falls for Princess Leilah when they meet at the bazaar. With the help of a magical genie he discovers in a dingy old lamp, Aladdin tries to impress Leilah by masquerading as a grand emir. To win her hand, however, Aladdin must learn to be himself. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY: ANANSEGRO: AFRICAN DRUMS, SONGS, STORIES AND GAMES. Presented by: Class Acts Arts Come join the “royal elders” and musicians of a typical West African village! Native Ghanaians Kofi Dennis and Kwame Ansah-Brew offer an exhilarating and memorable performance of traditional music, storytelling and dance. Through “call and response” songs, games and drum rhythms on authentic instruments, Anansegromma offers an engaging, first-hand exploration of West African cultural traditions. Students will be up and dancing with this lively duo in an unforgettable experience. Their varied programs address themes of cooperation, courage, hope, caring and sharing. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY: BABA JAMAL KORAM: THE STORY MAN Presented by: Class Acts Arts Master storyteller Baba Jamal Koram brings storytelling alive with the history, humor, music and lore of African and African-American cultures. Blending contemporary and traditional storytelling techniques with drumming, call and response, wit and wisdom, his stories encourage youth to make intelligent choices and to improve their character. Baba Jamal’s programs include: Baby Griot’s Drumming Circle – drumming and stories for young children; African Stories in the Americas – folklore and mythology, Under the Griot’s Tree – lighthearted children’s stories. ARTS FOR EVERY STUDENT These events are offered by our member organizations throughout the DC metropolitan area (within 30 miles of Washington, DC). Registered schools may request up to 100 tickets by grade grouping to these events per school year. The DC Collaborative supports the cost of tickets and transportation to the events. Please refer to the AFES School Handbook for more information regarding how to register your school, program structure, and the process to request tickets for offered events.

BUTTERFLY PAVILION AND INSECT ZOO Presented by: Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History The Butterfly Pavilion and Insect Zoo help make science interactive and fun. The Butterfly Pavilion features more than 300 live tropical butterflies from around the world demonstrating co-evolution with plants. The Insect Zoo offers a showcase of arthropods with tarantula-feeding demonstrations and an opportunity to touch and hold live arthropods. EVENT DATE: October 12 and 26, 2011; November

CLASSICALLY DIFFERENT ADVENTURES Presented by: Washington Performing Arts Society Story-teller Arianna Ross blends the power of acrobatics, storytelling, and music to engage her audience in programs that entertain and enrich their knowledge of themselves and the world. Involved throughout the program, students leave wanting to read more folktales, tell more stories, and deepen their understanding of history. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY: DINO ROCK: INTERACTIVE MUSICAL PUPPET THEATRE Presented by: Class Acts Arts Marvelous original music and colorful puppetry animate the world of science through a subject that ignites everyone’s imagination: dinosaurs! Award-winning artists Ingrid Crepeau and Michele Valeri present interactive programs children will long remember. The singing, dancing Junkyard Pirates puppets made from recycled materials sail the urban seas on the lookout for ways they can recycle, reuse and reduce as they confront the trash-hungry monster, Landfill. Dinosaur Babies playfully explores human and dinosaur babies’ similarities and environmental effects on dinosaur adaptability. Seven exceptional creatures in the Dinosaur Book of World Records inspire children to create their own record books and Mi Casa Es Su Casa introduces our Latin American neighbors through bilingual songs, Latin Rhythms and travel stories. DR. DOLITTLE Presented by: Imagination Stage Dr. Dolittle has abandoned his traditional medical practice in favor of feathered, furry, ferocious, and in some cases, fantastical beasts. He travels to Africa where he and his apprentice encounter bickering monkeys, elephants, lions and even the wicked pirate Bel Ali! Through his unconventional methods, Dr. Dolittle succeeds in bringing peace to all the warring creatures. “KATHA”- STORY-TIME WITH FOLK TALES OF INDIA Presented by: Gandhi Memorial Center Students will engage in the story-telling tradition of India through folk tales at the Gandhi Memorial Center. The moves and percussive sounds of Gumboot create a kind of “instant messaging” dance slapped out on gold miners’ rubber boots. Next, audience members are invited to learn Pantsula, an upbeat, urban dance whose style is similar to American hip-hop. THE SNOWY DAY Presented by: Adventure Theatre Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first American picture book that featured an African-American child as the main character. Peter celebrates the snow-draped inner city with a day of adventures- experimenting with footprints, knocking snow from a tree, creating snow angels, and trying to save a snowball for the next day. Petrushka, the clown, falls in love with the winsome Ballerina at first sight. The conniving and rich Moor loves the Ballerina as well, and seduces her with beautiful things. She rejects the earnest advances of Petrushka, who, upset and lonely, confronts the Moor. Have these puppets come to life, or are they merely playing out a story being told? Reality and magic are woven together with the deft hand of Basil Twist, against the backdrop of Stravinsky’s classic and moving score.
