While developing and administering an aggressive economic development program, DCEDC strives to control costs and to direct resources where they are most beneficial. The graphs below were developedusing information from the Door County Economic Development Corporation’s year-end financial statements. Schenck Business Solutions, Certified Public Accountants, will be conducting an audit ofthese statements this spring. Revenue for 2014 totaled $341,839 and expenses totaled $317,659.

■ Cadence Inc. joined the local business community with its purchase ofthe former Plainfield Precision. Cadence is a Virginia-based leading contractmanufacturer and maker of complex components and sub-assemblies formedical device and life sciences companies worldwide. The acquisition
positions Cadence as a top global provider of technologies and services in minimally invasive surgical products.DCEDC assisted the company in securing financial incentives from the Wisconsin Economic DevelopmentCorporation and with plans for a new facility in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park.
■ In April, Hatco Corporation was recognized as the Door County Industry of theYear at DCEDC’s 25th anniversary Annual Meeting, and AJ Frank, owner of DoorCounty Trolley, was named Entrepreneur of the Year for 2014. Hatco went on to wina regional Manufacturers Award of Distinction from the Green Bay Area Chamber.
■ The Door County Community Foundation launched the Door County CommunityOpportunity Investment Network (COIN) micro-loan fund and mentoring program tostimulate economic activity and opportunity in Door County. The COIN fund, administeredby DCEDC, is designed to provide microloans to start-up, newly established and/or emergingbusinesses located within the County that might otherwise be unable to access financing
through more conventional sources. Bearded Heart Coffee in Baileys Harbor and Colleen’s Heritage Bakery inEllison Bay were the first successful program applicants.
■ DCEDC facilitated the sale of a Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park parcel for the relocationand expansion of Pro Products, Inc. The beautiful new 35,000 square foot facility willsupport the growth of this family-owned business into the next generation. We alsoassisted Key Industrial Plastics with a 5,500 square foot addition to their existingIndustrial Park facility.
■ In May, the City of Sturgeon Bay was officially declared a US Coast Guard City, one of16 around the country and the only one in Wisconsin. The City, DCEDC and the CoastGuard also collaborated to relocate and enhance shore support facilities for the CoastGuard cutter Mobile Bay, constructed by local company Peninsula Building Systems.
■ DCEDC collaborated with Sturgeon Bay officials and consultantson the continued implementation of the plan for redevelopmentof the city’s west side waterfront. Zoning for a 76-room, $8.75Million hotel project by local developer Bob Papke was approvedby the City Council; the city began to gather public input on usesfor public waterfront spaces. An RFP was released for developmentproposals for the former granary site/building. We assisted theCity with successful applications for Coastal Management grantfunds for construction of features along the waterfront promenade;a WEDC Community Development Investment grant applicationis pending. The project team is also working with prospective
workforce housing developers for adjacent properties. DCEDC also worked with Sister Bay and the Village of EggHarbor on downtown redevelopment plan implementation.
■ DCEDC worked closely with the owners of Sonny’s Pizza to help facilitate theirrelocation and expansion into a long-vacant waterfront building on the Sturgeon Baycanal. The City of Sturgeon Bay helped finance the relocation with a January 2015Revolving Loan Fund program loan of $162,000.
■ Door County Brewing Co. successfully launched their new tasting room inBaileys Harbor. The beautifully renovated building quickly became a priority destinationfor visitors and residents alike. DCEDC helped with revolving loan fund programfinancing for the brewing equipment at the northern Door facility.
■ Door County Buy Local continued to grow their membership and hostedseven business networking mixers. The searchable online member database has240 business listings, and the Buy Local Facebook page has nearly 750 followers.This grass-roots economic development initiative seeks to strengthen localbusinesses, increase employment opportunities and educate the public aboutthe importance of buying locally whenever possible.
■ The Northern Door member communities of the Door County CoastalByway celebrated installation of federal grant-financed informational kiosksthat will eventually be in twelve locations around the 66-mile byway route; thiswas the first step in implementation of a comprehensive Byway InterpretiveMaster Plan. DCEDC serves as administrator of the grant funds and treasurer ofthe Coastal Byway Council.
■ Door County Broadband completed the acquisition of DCWis/NEWWISin April, and began an aggressive network expansion program. The new, locallyowned internet service provider applied to the FCC and was granted 10additional microwave links to support their network from Nasewaupee toGills Rock, continuing on to Washington Island. The company is workingon five new tower builds, including Sherwood Point and Zirbel Road, bothin Nasewaupee, and the corner of Highways A and F in Gibraltar.
■ The Door/Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership (DKBEP) provided anumber of career awareness programs for area school districts during the2013/14 academic year, including over 340 students participating in 8th GradeCareer Day. DKBEP also arranged job shadows for over 50 high school students,had nearly 600 students embarking on business tours of 50 area companies,and provided guest speakers in the classroom to address more than 700 studentson career prospects in a variety of local industries. Throughout the year, 70area businesses participated in some sort of DKBEP programming.
■ We administer Revolving Loan Fund programs for the County of Door,City of Sturgeon Bay and DCEDC. In 2014, loans totaling $915,000 wereapproved for Wild Tomato-Sister Bay, Door County Brewing Co., Renard’sCheese/Rosewood Dairy and Jim Olson Automotive Group, leveraging$2.9M in private funds, creating 62 jobs and retaining 14 jobs over the nextthree years. There are currently 28 active loans between the three revolvingloan funds.
■ The Door County Business Development Center (business incubator) iscurrently home to 16 businesses with 69 fulltime equivalent employees. BetterAvenues and Semling Distributing became new Center clients in 2014.Nineteen businesses have graduated from the Center, creating 80 jobs to date.
■ DCEDC assisted more than 120 entrepreneurs investigating the feasibilityand/or start-up of new business ventures. Door County Fire Company,Starboard Brewery, Bier Zot, Bank of Luxemburg, Rummele’s Jewelry,Frozen Spoon Frozen Yogurt, CVS, Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm, SunflourArtisan Bakery, Chives Door County, Cherryland Chiropractic, Get “Real”Café, and Andria’s Dancin’ On the Door School of Dance are among thevaried and exciting new business ventures established in Door County in 2014.
■ Our staff responded to 34 requests for assistance from existing localbusinesses. We assisted several significant business expansion projectsaround the County, including: Pro Products, Inc.; Therma-Tron-X; DCYMCA Child Care; Pine Crest Village; CenterPointe Marina; Boys &Girls Club of Door County.
