C H I L D R E N ’ S C O R N E R The DCL Videos Shows You How

Can’t make it to one of our craft workshops? Try it out from home.

Children’s Librarian Jenny Burke and Paralibrarian for Technology Scott Mosher teamed up to create video tutori-als for parents and caregivers to use at home.

Their first video shows you how to make a “Rain Cloud in a Cup.” This was the science experiment presented at Pre-school Storytime on July 10 during a weather-themed sto-rytime. It also coincided with the Summer Reading Pro-gram’s theme, “Fizz Boom READ.” You can view the video at: http://vimeo.com/100514659.

The second video (still image at right) was for the “Play Dough Party” on August 15. In it, Miss Jenny explains the recipe used for the party that you can make at home using everyday ingredients. View the video at: http://vimeo.com/103841975.

The goal in making these videos (besides having fun) was to provide a tutorial for parents/caregivers who weren’t able to attend our in-house programs, demonstrating the steps

needed to recreate these activities at home with their chil-dren. The activities are designed to help build early literacy skills (in this case, playing and talking).

The videos were produced on the “spur-of-the-moment”, meaning there was no script or set design. This gives the videos a real-time quality that illustrates how programs are done at the Library and what kind of programming parents and caregivers can expect.

Teens Learn Presentation and Production Skills @ DCL Workshop

On October 18th, the DCL hosted “Teen Actors’ Recording Studio: Own Your Voice!” a two-part workshop where teens honed their presentation and digital production skills under the tutelage of two well-known area experts.

SALT award-winning actress Maureen (’Mo’) Harrington gave teens the opportunity to improve their performance and presentation skills and gain confidence through a series of exercises used by professional performers. Local Sammy winner Todd Hobin gave participants a chance to experience what it’s like to work in a professional recording studio as teens learned the basics of audio recording and production. The program was made possible by a Senator John A. DeFrancisco Library Cultural Programming Grant.

Look for more creative programming at the DCL as it launches its Digital Production Club for teens this winter (see article at right).

“Unmask” with the Summer Reading Program Teen Video Challenge 2015

Area teens are invited to participate in the 2015 Summer Reading Pro-gram Teen Video Challenge at the DeWitt Community Library beginning this December.

Show off your creativity and create a 30 – 90 second video promoting Summer Reading at public libraries. Your video should include your interpretation of the 2015 Collaborative Summer Library Program teen slogan “Unmask” for the 2015 Summer Reading Hero theme.

One winning video will be selected as the New York State Winner and will be viewed by teens nationwide. The win-ner will receive $150 and $50 will be awarded to your library.

The contest is open to New York State teens aged 13 – 18, who can create their videos on their own or as part of a team.

This will be the first project for the DCL’s Digital Pro-duction Club (DPC). The DPC will encourage and provide

an outlet for creative individuals in our com-munity to express themselves through crea-tive endeavors such as video production, podcasting, Reader’s Theatre, Actor’s Work-shops, Comic Creation, and more! Visit www.dewlib.org for more information.

DCL TechExpress: Where Did the DCL Website Go?

You may have noticed that the Library’s website: dewlib.org, has not been working. We are having some growing pains as we upgrade the software used to man-age our website. Hopefully, when all of the kinks are worked out, the site will be more streamlined and secure for patrons (although it shouldn’t look very different). It should also be easier to administer, getting announce-ments up about upcoming programs, Library news, and exciting information about the library building project up as soon as possible. As we are working towards improving your web experience and our administration experience, we would like to let all patrons know that you can use dewlib.wordpress.com as an alternative site in the meantime. From the menu at the

top of dewlib.wordpress.com, you can use the catalog and login to your account, book meeting rooms, sign up for programs, see when the Library Board is meeting, and get other information about the library. We thank you for your patience.

NewsChannel 9 WSYR Anchor Carrie Lazarus gave the keynote address at the DCL’s 4th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair on October 24, 2014.

Our DCL 4th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair was a roaring success with more than 250 attendees and more than 50 area organizations, agencies, and businesses who shared information about their services and programs for older adults.

Vendors and attendees alike were pleased with the fair’s offerings of free health screenings, the sounds of Upstate Blend Barbershop Quartet, Tai Chi demonstrations, and most of all, the keynote address given by NewsChannel 9 WSYR Anchor Carrie Lazarus.

In our exit survey, attendees and vendors praised the event’s location in the upper level of ShoppingTown Mall and raised awareness of the event through an effective pre-publicity campaign.

The Fair was sponsored in part by the Rotary Club of DeWitt. Congratulations go to Kevin Kelly who won a new Kindle Fire HD 7, the prize in our Senior Fair Raffle.

RESCUE MISSION CLOTHING DRIVE AT THE DCL

For the fourth year, the Library will be hosting a Syracuse Rescue Mission collection barrel from November until the end of January. Please consider donating new or gently used clothing to help those in need in our community. For more information about the Rescue Mission, check their website: www.rmlifechanging.org DCL AT SHOPPINGTOWN’S MALL-O-WEEN

ShoppingTown Mall hosted its 3rd Annual Mall-o-Ween event, and the DCL was there. Library staff handed out candy, shared information, answered your questions, and wore costumes at the event held on October 30th! More than 2000 children and their parents and caregivers came to the event and stopped by the Library’s booth. DCL ANIME COLLECTION

Our growing collection of Japanese Anime DVDs was in need of a new home. We moved these films and TV series collections to the shelves at the end of the New Biog-raphies section, which is near their original home alongside the Graphic Novels.
