Fall 2013

Dear Friends,

Most of us are no longer students tied to the school schedule; and yet, September calls us to learn something new, make a commitment to our spiritual lives and gather up a harvest of plenty. As the days grow shorter we want to make time for God, find support in a community of sincere believers, and explore new possibilities. Welcome to Dominican Center’s Fall Catalog! You will find some familiar favorites: the Foundations in Spirituality with its follow-up programs of Companioning and the Spiritual Direction Practicum. Many participants have found this path enriching, making friends of spiritual giants and learning to pray in diverse and deepening ways. There are a number of retreat and spiritual direction opportunities, and even a program for preparation to facilitate spiritual groups.

Recognizing that men and women approach spirituality uniquely, you will find programs such as Women of God, Finding Inner Peace in a Turbulent World (a day retreat for women) and Men’s Spirituality Breakfasts as well as spiritual direction groups for women and for men and for both. Recognizing that some people are looking for particular help on their journey, there are programs on grief, the enneagram and opportunities in Spanish.

Some new programs that might pique your interest are Spirituality of Beauty, A Way: Out, Through and Into with a psycho-spiritual base, and Catholic Tradition which explores Catholic faith and tradition through specific topics.

We continue to explore the body/spirit connection with Yoga and Feldenkrais. Justice for Earth and Her people is part of our programs Little Prairie in the Big City and in Crossing Borders as our country struggles with caring for the earth and with immigration issues.

The harvest is plenty and we invite you to consider any of our programs. We look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Faithfully,

Diane Zerfas, OPDCM Program Director

Many of the programs at DCM qualify for Catechist Certification by the Diocese of Grand Rapids. They are noted with an asterisk (*) followed by a category name in each course description

This session will prayerfully and creatively explore how the doctrine of the Holy Trinity developed through Scripture, Church Tradition and human experience. Cost: $15.00. * CFD: Content of the Faith

A CATHOLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 086-029-10 Presenter: Mary Vaccaro, Dominican Associate, DCM Director and Spiritual DirectorWednesday, Oct. 16, 7:00-9:00 p.m.What do Catholics believe about the Bible? CYCLE OF GRACE: THE LITURGICAL YEAR 086-029-12 Presenter: Diane Zerfas, OP, Spiritual Director, Director of Programs at DCMWednesday, Dec. 18, 7:00-9:00 p.m.We know that our lives are more than the number of our years. Each year of life reminds us of where we were, what we were doing and who lived alongside us. Our lives are not linear but spirals of experience. The life of Jesus Christ circles each year with the celebrations of Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, and counted Sundays of Ordinary Time. Each cycle invites us into a deeper reality of the mystery of the Incarnation. Exploring the historical development, the living celebrations, the Scripture and images of the Liturgical Year, we will see how Christ’s life intersects with our lives. WOMEN OF GOD: HEALING MERCY 086-032Presenters: Katherine Hill, RSM & Marcia Good, Dominican AssociateSept. 21, 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon. The healing ministry of Jesus calls all of us to respond to the needs of the sick and dying.

Catherine McAuley heard that call in the streets of Dublin in 1827. From this modest beginning, the Sisters of Mercy have spread across the globe caring for poor women and children and establishing the Mercy Healthcare System in the United States.

Cicily Saunders, born in England in 1918, became a nurse, a medical social worker and a physician. From her many experiences with pain and death, she began the first Hospice in 1967. Her vision of palliative care has comforted many home to God.

Women of God is an ongoing, semiannual series organized around a given theme, featuring the life stories of specific women, the historical context in which they lived and the ways in which their spirituality empowered and sustained them. Cost: $30.00 * CFD: Content of the Faith

LITTLE PRAIRIE IN THE BIG CITY 086-035Presenters: Mark Hepper and Walt Marston Monday, Sept. 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Rain date, Tuesday Sept. 24, 6:30-8:30 p.m.). Presented by the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids Prairie Subcommittee (Michael Bruggink, Landscape Architect; Chris Muldoon, Master Gardener; Lucille Janowiak, OP, Master Naturalist in process; Joyce Tuharsky, Naturalist and Teacher; and Dee Versluis, Artist) The restoration of native plants and prairie habitats is generating great enthusiasm today. Recognizing the kindred connections between Catholic teaching on caring for creation and the sustainability movement, the DS ~ GR have claimed “fostering a contemplative stance that all the earth is sacred and interconnected” as one of our ministry directions. For this reason, we are now restoring a portion of our campus into a prairie habitat. We invite you to come and experience Little Prairie Habitat at Marywood. Explore its intriguing characteristics and offerings. Discover what it can teach you and the possibilities it holds for you. Please dress for an outdoor experience, bring/wear bug spray. The ground is uneven and may be soggy after a rain. Cost: $15.00 * CFD: Spirituality of the Catechist

FAITH AND BELIEF BEYOND MODERNITY 086-031Presenter: John A. Dick, PhD, STD, Emeritus Professor Catholic University of LouvainTuesday, Oct. 15, 7:00-9:00 p.m. When we do theology we necessarily express ourselves in the symbols, words and rituals that are products of our culture. In fact all of our concepts and our experiential interpretations are shaped and influenced to a great extent by the culture and the language out of which they emerge. There is no theology without culture; but there can be a culture without theology. This of course is the situation in which many people find themselves today:

in a theological desert. The process has been ongoing for some time; and therefore, my concern about faith and belief beyond modernity. Today we need to find a way to articulate the human experience of the Divine that reduces it neither to the extreme secularity of the post-theistic theologians nor to the unthinking and closed-minded certitude of the hypertheistic. We need to find a way to understand the positive, substantive and normative meaning of transcendence as it makes a claim on human beings within contemporary historical existence—within contemporary culture. We need to find a new theological language. Cost: $15.00 * CFD: Content of the Faith

We will close with the question of what will Mary be for Christian Faith in the future. Cost: $15.00 * CFD: Content of the Faith

Isaiah dreams of a day when swords shall be turned into plowshares, when the wolf shall be the guest of the lamb, when the desert will bloom, when the virgin shall conceive and bear a son. John the Baptist dreams of preparing a way for the Lord, of justice for all—of the One who is to come. Joseph and Mary, each in their own way, dream that their impossible situation will turn out for the best. What are your Advent dreams? Come and share in this evening of study, discussion and prayer so that you can begin the Advent season wide awake yet ready to dream. Cost: $15.00 * CFD: Spirituality of the Catechist

Meditating with Scripture over the months’ time is then shared in a small group with a short teaching about Ignatius’s prayer methods and insights into the spiritual life. GENERAL PROGRAMS

HOW JUDGING AFFECTS OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH GOD, OTHERS AND OURSELVES 086-044

Thursdays Sept 12 and 19, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Presenter: Joachim Lally, CSP, Paulist Priest, Artist, MusicianThis presentation will look at a number of Scripture quotations in regard to judging, including those which contradict one another. We will examine how judging, in many ways, is the original sin—that which separates us from God, others and ourselves as seen in the Genesis account of the eating of the fruit of the tree of good and evil. The connection between judging and violence will be made as well as how the false self of Merton is the arena in which judging takes place over and over. Alternatives to judgmental thinking will offer some solid basis for hope that judging does not have to be the

controlling factor in our relationships. Cost: $25.00 * CFD: Spirituality of the Catechist

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION Spiritual Direction can best be summed up as the art of contemplative listening, which is listening with the whole of one’s being. Traditionally, Spiritual Direction has been described in terms of a one-to-one relationship.

Another approach that is relatively new is that of group Spiritual Direction. One’s situation in Spiritual Direction offers a safe, non-judgmental place of welcome for the directee where his/her experiences are taken seriously. Contemplation and personal reflection on one’s life and prayer bring this communication to awareness. Articulating and clarifying these experiences with a spiritual director assists the person to notice even more about his/her conscious relationship with God. For more information, call 616.514.3325.

WorshipOUR CHAPELS ARE SACRED SPACES FOR PRAYERWe treasure liturgical prayer. Rooted in Dominican Spirituality and in the spirit of Vatican II, the depth of our liturgical prayer grounds us in Holy Mystery and strengthens us to be authentic in today’s world. The quality of preaching, musical leadership, and inclusivity in roles and relationships in the gathered assembly are of primary importance to us. The Eucharist is our common ground, where holiness is offered and where God challenges us to change and to serve authentically. We invite you to come and pray with us.

SUNDAY EUCHARIST In1985 with the renovation of the Marywood chapel, the Sisters invited lay people to join them in worship and song. Many have responded, and the body of worshipers has grown along with their level of involvement. The Sunday Assembly continues to be a growing community of Sisters, Associates and lay people who have developed a strong spiritual bond with each other. Sunday Eucharist is celebrated in Dominican Chapel Marywood at 10:00 a.m. On Labor Day weekend, Eucharist is celebrated on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. We are grateful for the services of our Diocesan and Order priests who come to celebrate liturgy with us.

WEEKDAY EUCHARIST Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays at 9:45 a.m. in Aquinata Chapel.

MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER Our Dominican Prayer of the Hours is an integral expression of our common life. As darkness gives way to the morning sun and as the sun sets on the day’s labors, we mark these sacred moments with psalms of praise and thanks. For Dominic and Catherine, communal prayer formed the foundation of their contemplative life and the holy preaching. The psalms of Morning and Evening Prayer are chanted daily with simple psalm tones at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Dominican Chapel Marywood. All are welcome.

CEMETERY PRAYER • SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 On Thursday, September 5, we will observe the anniversary of deceased friends and benefactors with prayers at Resurrection Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome. Lunch will follow at Marywood.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE • SEPTEMBER 22, 2013The International Day of Prayer for Peace Service will be held at Dominican Chapel Marywood on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. People from various faith traditions will speak of peace from the perspective of their faith tradition.

This seven-day prayer includes a candlelight procession, hymns, psalms, scripture, preaching and chanting of Old Testament prophecies.
