DCMS Digest Principal’s Message Dear families, It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the halfway point of the first semester! We have had a fun-filled first quarter, with our sixth grade Camp Tecumseh field trip and our seventh grade Turkey Run field trip. Our Project Lead the Way classes took a trip to the Manufacturing Expo at Ivy Tech, our musicians and vocalists have been practicing hard for upcoming concerts, and our athletes have been competing on the field and on the court. We are so very fortunate to have such a tremendous group of students with such a wide variety of interests which bring pride to our school and our community. At DCMS, we are constantly striving to meet the needs of our students and to provide them with learning opportunities that will help them succeed in the classroom and beyond. In addition to music and sports, we have a wide variety of clubs and activities, including student council, FFA, robotics club, Academic Spell Bowl, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and Academic Superbowl. If we do not have a niche that best fits a student or a group of students, we encour- age out-of-the-box thinking and we support the creation of new clubs and activities. The middle school years are when many students are seeking a place to “belong,” and at DCMS, EVERYONE belongs! DCMS DigestPrincipal’s Message

Dear families,

It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the halfway point of the first semester!

If we do not have a niche that best fits a student or a group of students, we encour-age out-of-the-box thinking and we support the creation of new clubs and activities. The middle school years are when many students are seeking a place to “belong,” and at DCMS, EVERYONE belongs!

Sincerely,

Band Notes

The DCMS band program is in full swing now. If anyone needs instrument repairs during the year, our Paige’s music representative comes every Thursday to handle repairs. Supplies can be purchased through Paige’s music on-line or Quinlan and Fabish music store in Lafayette. The store is located on Sagamore parkway closest to 52.

Our first performance is on October 10th for all of the middle school bands. Our performance schedule of concert dates can be found on the MS website and each student received a concert schedule for the year during the first week of school.

For any current students in grades 7-11, we have started registering for our trip to Florida next year. Families can register on-line at musictravel.com.

As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns please E-mail me.

Sincerely,Mr. Dennison

Save Those Plastic Lids and Caps!

If you would like to see your principal and your assistant principal get duct taped to a wall, start saving your plastic bottle caps and lids! The caps and lids are being collected to make benches that will be placed at the Abby and Libby park/softball fields. DCMS is having a contest--if we collect 2,000 pounds of caps/lids before December 1, then our students and staff will get to help duct tape Mrs. Gustin and Mr. Rettig to the wall! A list of acceptable caps/lids can be found here: http://www.greentreeplastics.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/ABCcapslist2017.pdf

DCMS Mission StatementDelphi Community Middle School is committed to developing responsible citizens through a mentally, socially, and emotionally diverse curriculum, stressing transitional growth through teamwork.

A little middle school humor...

School-Wide Field TripThe middle school students will be traveling to Mary Max Theater in Logansport on Oct. 16 to see the movie So B. It. This is a popular middle school novel by Sarah Weeks that has been made into a motion picture. The screenwriter is Royal Center native Garry Williams.

The students have had the opportunity to participate in a “Soof” contest and a “guess the amount of jelly beans in the jar” contest. These activities stem from the plot of this book. A Q&A time will follow the movie with the screenwriter, Garry Williams. We are lucky to have this gentleman give his time to share in our students’ education about the movie world.

NO DELAYED START ON WEDNESDAY,

OCTOBER 11. The high school will be participating in a va-riety of assessments on Wednesday, October, 11; therefore, the middle school will begin ON TIME on that day. Students at the middle school will be participating in pre-planned activities that morning. Thank you for your cooperation!

Sixth Grade

“2 For 1 Cards” Fundraiser

The 6th grade is starting a fundraiser to help cover the cost of their field trips this year. There are two trips scheduled. The first one was our recent trip to Camp Tecumseh on September 27-28. The other trip is to the Indianapolis Repertory Theater to view the classic “A Christ-mas Carol” on December 6th. For the fundraiser, the students are selling two-for-one cards for local businesses. For each card sold, $4 will be deducted from the student’s cost of the trips.

Reading Counts Points

Please encourage your child to read nightly even if it isn’t assigned work. Remember he/she needs 30 points (40 for the HA class) by October 11th. In order to receive full credit on those points, they also need to have read at least one book in their Lexile level or above.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for the afternoon and eve-ning of Thursday, October 19th. The 6th grade team will be contacting parents of those students for whom we have a concern. If you have questions for a particular teacher, please to contact the particular teacher, so he/she can help you.

Camp Tecumseh Trip Was a Success!!

Good times! What fun we all had at camp this year! Team 6 is pleased with the student behavior, participation, and general attitudes that were displayed at camp. The students were great, and the help we received was much appreciated.

We observed students who had never spoken to one another, nor had a class together, join together with their trail groups to accom-plish assigned tasks. The students had to communicate, problem solve, become a leader or follow the lead of another, trust one another, and promote self-confidence in themselves and others. Overall, the trail groups did a wonderful job on all of the above. Others found that it is not always easy to work within a group, especially if one group contained too many leaders or not enough. The students had to work this out among themselves, or they would fail the task at hand. The students did everything from reading a map and diffusing a warhead to navi-gating a lava field.

Thank you again for your support and participation to make this year’s trip a success!

Seventh GradeA HUGE thank you to our wonderful seventh grade parents who braved the rain and chaperoned our Turkey Run field trip! What a fun and memorable day it was!

Eighth GradeThe 8th grade will be having a Walk-a-thon on Friday, October 20th. They will be collecting donations to use for this year’s field trips. Students have pledged to walk for 2 hours (24 laps) on the track.

Mrs. Bieghler, our amazing school counselor, is ALWAYS in! Please feel free to contact her with any concerns in regards to your student’s social, emotional, or academic success!
