and welcome to Creativity magazine. As you might have guessed, this issue is all about gifts: making them,

buying them and maybe even receiving them. However, while Christmas is a time for giving, its easy to forget that one of the most precious things we can give to someone is

our time. Making your own presents not only shows someone you really care, it also serves as

a gift for yourself; nurturing your creativity, encouraging mindfulness and taking time out from the daily and, no doubt, busy routine.

Having said that, if you are short on time (and who isnt at this time of year?), our crafty gift guide is here to help. Weve picked some of our favourite creative pressie ideas to suit every budget. Turn to page 14 to have a read.

    Enjoy the issue, SaahSaahSaah

We all know frst-hand how relaxing and enjoyable crafting is it helps us switch off from a busy day and allows a bit of time for ourselves. UK charity Mind agrees and, as a result, is encouraging crafters to organise a Christmas Crafternoon. It's hoped the events will raise awareness of mental health issues and the benefts of taking part in creative therapies. So, get together with friends, colleagues or your local community to help Mind be there so no-one has to face a mental health problem alone.

If youd like to organise a fun, festive event for Mind, go to www.mind.org.uk/crafternoon to register for your free Crafternoon fundraising pack.

In fact, these wooden caption letters are so versatile, they can be used all year round to celebrate a new addition to the family or as custom house-warming treasures.

    PAPER CRAFT

Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without an advent calendar over owing with little treats tucked behind each of the openings. The Papermania Folk Christmas collection is perfect for creating your own advent calendar card, but the Jolly Santa papers would work well here too. Then simply pop your selection of mini gifts behind the pretty, embellished doors ready for December 1st.

Cover an A4 card blank with red Folk Christmas paper and mat with white

patterned paper, leaving a border of about O.5cm around the edges.

Cut a 28 x 19cm panel of white cardstock and cover with teal coloured patterned

paper. Turn the panel over and mark a O.5cm border around the panel. Divide the panel inside the border into a 6 x 4 grid made of evenly spaced 3.5cm squares.

Cut away the squares using a craft knife and metal ruler to form the apertures for the

pockets. Attach the panel to the middle of the card front using several layers of 3D foam dots to give the depth required for the contents.

Cut 24 4 x 4cm squares from complementary colours of cardstock.

Decorate each square with Folk Christmas patterned papers, embellishments and greetings from the ultimate die-cut and paper pack, sticker sheets and tear-off topper pack. Use the pictures above for inspiration.

Pop a gift of chocolate, toys or craft items into the apertures. Adhere a couple of layers

of 3D foam squares in each corner of the door, positioned so they slot snugly into the aperture. Keep the paper on the top layer of foam square.

Finish by embellishing with a snow ake-topped ribbon bow at the top of the card.

Storage & stationeryUse the new layered fox die to customise journals, boxes and more for your creative workspace

Ihave to say that I absolutely love kraft and boxes. Since I'm always in need of a bit more storage (who isn't?), this project was the perfect excuse to combine my favourite things into one gorgeous bundle. The sturdy Bare Basics square drawers, teamed with co-ordinating journals and embellishments, can make a great gift for a craft-loving friend or even just for someone who likes to stay organised. Creating them for yourself? They are also an ideal starting point for that long overdue crafty tidy-up. The huge selection of boxes in the new release of Papermania's Bare Basics include storage, nesting and shadow boxes that would look equally as good with a similar makeover.

Drawer setCut four 9.5 x 7.5cm panels of Papermania Owl Folk paper, round the corners with an

Xcut 2 in 1 Corner Punch and glue to the drawer fronts on a Bare Basics square drawer set. Cut panels from the same paper to cover the top and sides of the drawer set, leaving a border around the panels to show off the lovely kraft fnish.

Cut four 7.5 x 2.5cm white cardstock panels and stamp the drawer name with

Bare Basics alphabet stamps. Insert inside the label holders and adhere on the drawer fronts. Die cut two fox heads using an Xcut Layered Fox Large Die set and different colours of cardstock for the layers. Four different eye shapes are included in the die set and give each fox a slightly different character. Paper piece the heads and adhere on two of the drawers. Die cut two mushroom scenes in co-ordinating cardstock and layer on the remaining two drawer fronts above the label holders.1

Die cut a few co-ordinating acorns and leaves and glue in the corners of the top

panel with adhesive dots or a 2 in 1 glue pen.

To make the drawer pulls, cut a length of ribbon 8cm longer than the drawer

base. Fold over one end of the ribbon to create a small loop and stitch in place. Position the loop at the front of the drawer and glue the ribbon in a straight line along the underside of the drawer and up the back.

Glue two Bare Basics wooden caption letters under each corner of the base.

This not only looks great, but also makes it easier to open the bottom drawers. TIP Use large Craft Planet Wooden Beads instead of caption letters for a different look.

Toadstool mini journalDie cut two rows of toadstools and grass from dark brown cardstock using

the layered fox die and adhere together in a straight line across the centre front of a Bare Basics mini journal.

Die cut a few acorns, leaves and toadstools from two colours of

co-ordinating cardstock. Add to the cover, overlapping the lower edge of the grass and covering the die-cut join. TIP Use a Sailor 2 In 1 Glue Pen to get the glue into the intricate areas of the die-cut.

Finish with a co-ordinating cardstock die-cut acorn and leaf cluster on the

corner of the mini journal envelope.

MatchboxCreate a lovely charm or earring store with this die-cut embellished Bare Basics

medium matchbox. Make a drawer pull for the inner section of the matchbox with a length of ribbon 4cm longer than the base. Fold over one end to create a small loop and stitch in place. Position the loop at the front of the inner section and glue the ribbon in a straight line along the underside and up the back.

Cut a panel from matching Owl Folk paper, shape with a 2 in 1 corner punch and adhere

to the outer matchbox top. Trim the ends of a label holder to ft the box and glue diagonally across the top. Stamp a cardstock panel, trim to ft and slide into the label holder.

Die cut several leaves, acorns and toadstools in co-ordinating cardstock colours and add

to the box lid, tucking a few under and a few over the label holder.

Line the base of the inner section with orange cardstock and fll with charms.

Fox journalDie cut all the fox elements from the layered fox die using light and dark orange, cream

    and dark brown cardstock.

Assemble the head, tail and chest die-cuts. Arrange the pieces on the front of the mini

journal so that the entire fox fts neatly on the front cover. Tuck the tail further under the body, trimming the tail to ft.

When happy with the placement, glue all the pieces in place, ensuring the fox does

    not overhang the edge.

Finally, add a single die-cut toadstool to the journal envelope.

As anyone born in December will know, the chilly months dont have to be all about the festivities of Christmas. Winter weddings are also an increasingly popular choice by couples keen to incorporate the beauty of this varied and magical season into their special day.

With this in mind, the Wedding Ever After range is ideal for winter nuptials; its beautiful pearlescent damask patterns reminiscent of a frosty day with pretty embellishments adding the glitz and glamour needed for such a meaningful occasion.

Cut kraft card to 15.5 x 3.5cm and emboss with an Xcut Snow ake Pattern Embossing

Folder. Blend aqua pigment ink around the edges and set with a heat tool. Apply ink in this way to all the paper elements of the card. With the debossed side uppermost, add a length of 'Mr & Mrs' ribbon and brown string across the kraft border.

Die cut the largest nesting circle die from kraft card and emboss with the snow ake

patterned embossing folder, inking the debossed side. Using the next smallest die, die cut the wording from a large square topper and attach to the middle of the die-cut kraft circle.

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to create the card base.

Add punched snow crystals to the organza ribbon and embellish with large light blue

    adhesive stones.

Cluster gold and silver berries, die-cut leaves and white rose petal posies as a bouquet

on the left of the topper. Slide a circle buckle on velvet ribbon and attach at the base of the bouquet,

topped with a heart charm. Apply small gems around the perimeter of the sentiment.

Cut a 15 x 11.5cm kraft card panel and emboss with the snow ake pattern. Cut a

14.5 x 11cm panel from a second damask pocket card and mat on the kraft card panel.

Die cut a large kraft snow ake and glue in the bottom-right corner of the damask

panel. Punch the 'Happily Ever After' sentiment from a small square topper. Attach in the centre of the die-cut snow ake and embellish with small adhesive stones. Wrap 'Mr & Mrs' ribbon and brown string around the panels and attach inside the card.

Remember when people used to put empty crisp packets in the oven, shrink them down and turn them into jewellery? Well that craft has been revamped and brought back into the 21st century! Create this quirky shrink plastic necklace using the brand new Creativity Essentials Clear Stamps Sets and embellish with a Papermania Bare Basics Wooden Heart.

Shrink necklaceTrace the large and small hearts from the templates on page 93 on to shrink plastic.

    Cut out using scissors.

Place a selection of stamps from the Folk Floral stamp set on a clear stamp block and

cover with permanent ink. Carefully position the stamp block on the larger shrink plastic heart and press down rmly. Peel off and repeat the stamping process until the heart is covered. Set aside.

Colour the smaller heart using Artiste Permanent Dual Tip Marker Pens. Leave

both hearts to dry for approximately 3O minutes until the ink is dry to the touch and does not smear.

Using the template as a guide, punch two holes through the larger heart. It is very

important to do this before shrinking the plastic. Following the 'How to' steps below, shrink and atten the hearts and then leave to cool completely for approximately 1O minutes.

Using silicone glue, apply a pea-sized amount to the centre of the large heart and

place the red, smaller heart directly on top. Gently press to fuse together and leave to dry for a few hours. Repeat the gluing process with the wooden heart on top of the red plastic heart.

When the glue has set, attach a silver chain to the heart with jump rings, using jewellery

N othing says 'just for you' quite like a batch of home-baked brownies. They're even more of a treat when delivered in a hand-decorated, vintage-style gift box. If you aren't quite up to baking your own, or you think the recipient might actually relish the challenge themselves, then packing all the ingredients neatly in little bags and popping them inside the box is a great alternative. Follow this great recipe to make a batch of gluten-free brownies to pop in a box and include the recipe in the little recipe card holder.

Gluten-fre brownies Ingredients:15Og good quality Fair Trade dark chocolate (at least 7O% cocoa solids)17Og unsalted butter3 large free range eggs15Og Fair Trade granulated sugar15Og Fair Trade dark muscovado sugar1 vanilla pod, seeds only (or 1.5 tsp vanilla extract)12Og gluten-free our

How to make the browniesPreheat the oven to 18OC / 16OC fan / 35OF and line an 8" square baking tin with a

    piece of non-stick baking paper.

Break the chocolate into pieces and place with the butter into a heatproof bowl

suspended over a pan of barely simmering water. Leave to melt, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, beat the eggs with a whisk until light, frothy and lemon coloured.

Gradually beat in the sugars and continue beating for approximately three minutes

    until the mixture is thick.

Add the slightly cooled, melted chocolate and butter mixture to the egg and sugar

mixture. Stir in the vanilla seeds or extract. Fold in the gluten-free our.

Spoon the batter into the prepared baking tin and put on the middle shelf of the oven.

Bake for 35-4O minutes. Leave in the pan to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Store in an airtight container. TIP Replace the gluten-free our with ground almonds for a lovely gooey gluten-free chocolate brownie, but bear in mind these won't transport as well in the decoupage box.

Draw a 4 x 1cm tab on the top of each divider. Space the tabs along the tops of

each divider so that each divider tab can be seen when behind another in the box. Carefully cut around the edges of the tab with scissors.

Using Papermania Bare Basics Wooden Alphabet Stamps and an Artiste Black

How did you get into crafting?Ive been into drawing and making things since I was a girl. I used to love sketching in pencil and making my mum tiny little cards.

I started making cards, including all our wedding stationery, when we got married in 2OO1. I then started scrapbooking and making mini books in 2OO6. These days I do Project Life, which is a weekly memory-keeping project using pocket pages.

When did you start designing for CreativityI rst started creating projects for the magazine back in July 2O14, which was issue 48. I made a range of projects including a pair of Roald Dahl bookends and a couple of scrapbook layouts on colour blocking.

Describe your style of craftingMy scrapbooking style is modern with the emphasis on telling the story. I then embellish

the page with pretty papers and things. I do like to try a lot of crafts I always have more than one work in progress. I absolutely love to crochet and have baskets of yarn all over the place. I wish I could craft all day!

The three most-used items in your stash? For me, my go-to products are white or kraft cardstock, kraft tags and a black ink pad. They will go with anything and are a great starting point for a lot of projects.

Hi Creativity,I'd like to start a new weekly thread in the 'chit chit' section of the forum called 'Tips and Tricks'. It would be a place where we could share crafty tips. It could include new ways of using some things, happy accidents, crafting disasters the good and the bad. It would not be about promoting products or companies or criticising people, but just doing what us crafters do best: helping each other out. What do you think?Lovemakestwo, via the forum

Hi Creativity,I fnally fnished a mini album Ive been working on for my Mums birthday and I wanted to share it with you. Its the frst album Ive made and loved putting it all together, from choosing and antiquing the papers, covering the chipboard pages and hunting out all the embellishments in my stash.

I cut out a lot of the die cuts and brought them to life with glitter glue. The chipboard elements were brown, so I used two different gold inks to colour them. You can see pictures of the inside pages on my docrafts gallery: RachelJayne. Many thanks for all your inspiration! Best wishes, Rachel Storry

From the wrong side, curl the edges of each segment around a paint brush or knitting needle to form a narrow cone, keeping the

glittered side of the paper to the outside. Keep the roll as tight as possible at the tip, before adding a spot of glue to hold in place.

To make this twinkling Polish star you will need ten identical sheets of Create Christmas A4 Glitter Paper. Draw a 21cm circle on

the back of each sheet with a 3cm diameter circle in the middle. Divide into eight equal segments a compass and protractor is handy here!

Cut out each large glitter paper circle. Cut along the lines radiating out from the centre, stopping the cut at the edge of the small

inner circle. Repeat for each circle. Use either a sharp pair of scissors or a craft knife and a metal ruler for accurate cutting.

Continue working around the circle until all the segments have become the points of a star. Repeat for all ten circles.

TIP Wrap an elastic band around the cones to hold in place till the glue sets, or use a hot glue gun for more instant results.

  • Astriking and sturdy key ring made from kraft cardstock? Well, yes! This gorgeous key ring not only looks good but is strong enough to withstand the battering that comes with everyday use in a handbag, car or pocket. The ageing process not only makes the kraft card look like well-worn leather, but gives it strength to withstand the rough treatment of everyday life.

To make your own, frstly take apart the components of a Papermania Bare Basics Ring Memo Block and glue together about ten of the internal sheets to make a solid block. Place the front and back covers inside an Xcut Damask Background Embossing Folder and pass through an A4 Xpress die-cutting machine to create the lovely raised pattern. Glue one embossed tag to

Decorative bo k bindingCreate a link-stitched journal with this step-by-step guide

The ancient craft of book binding is an art that looks pretty spectacular but actually is not very dif cult to do. With a little practice it is easy to get a fantastic spine on a notebook or journal that will not only look impressive, but is functional too. If you are on the lookout for a fun craft project or a quick way of making a personal gift for that special stationery or book lover, this could be the perfect project for you.

Creating a text block and the books coversSeparate the paper for the internal pages into groups of 4-6 pages each. Using a bone

folder, fold each group of pages neatly in half to form the signatures. Make 12 of these for the sewing pattern shown.

Now its time to form the front and back covers. Cut two pieces from the book board

and trim to the same size as the folded signatures. Choose a decorative paper from a Santoro Paper Pack for the outside of the cover and trim to size, leaving at least 15mm around each edge. The decorative paper for the insides, meanwhile, should be trimmed to the same size of the board minus 5mm all the way round.

Apply an even layer of Anita's Tacky Glue to one side of the cover board and then rmly

press it into the centre of one of the outside papers. Turn it over and, working from the centre outwards, smooth out any bumps. Repeat for the other board and allow to dry.

Once dry, carefully trim each corner as shown to create a neat, mitred edge.

Starting with a long edge, spread an even layer of glue on the back of the paper overhanging the book board. Fold the paper over the board to cover the edge and frmly press the glued edge until it holds with no slipping. Repeat on the opposite long edge and then allow to dry. Meanwhile, repeat for the other cover board. Its important to do opposite sides frst, and allow to dry underneath a weight, so the boards dont warp. Once dry, repeat with the short edges, carefully tucking in any overhang at the corners. When the edges have dried, spread a thin, even layer of glue to the back of the inside paper and carefully apply it to the inside of the cover board. As with the outside, work from the centre outwards, smoothing any bubbles or wrinkles, and frmly sealing the edges to lock neatly with the folded edges of the outside cover paper. Repeat with the other cover and allow to dry thoroughly under a heavy weight.

Piercing the pagesMake a piercing template using a scrap piece of heavy paper or cardstock. It should

be the same height as the signatures and 8-1Ocm wide. Fold neatly in half then use a ruler and pencil

to mark sewing stations along the inside-folded edge. For this project, where the book is 13cm tall, the template has been marked from the top and bottom at: 6mm, 6mm, 12mm, 6mm, 12mm, 6mm. These measurements can be scaled to size for any book, but make sure there is a total of 12 stations for the pattern to work. Once happy with the position of the stations, punch a hole through each with an awl.

Open one of the folded signatures, pressing the template frmly into the inside crease

and making sure the top and bottom edges line up precisely. Then, using the awl, punch a hole through the signature at each of the marked stations. When the signature is refolded, the punched holes should be visible on the outside-folded edge. Repeat with each signature.

On the front cover board, lightly mark a straight line offset a little from the left long

edge. Its a good idea to make this line the same distance as the frst sewing station; offset 6mm. Mark this line as far in as needed, but it should be at least 5mm to prevent the papers from tearing. Fold the template in half and use this to mark the same 12 sewing stations along the line on the cover.

Pierce through with the awl. Repeat on the right edge of the back cover.

Sewing the book togetherCut a piece of thread about a metre in length and thread the needle. Start

working from back to front by holding the back cover of the book and the last signature of the text block together. Dont worry if there isnt enough thread to sew the entire book if there is insuffcient thread, simply attach a new length with a square knot on the inside of the current signature and continue.

Attaching the back cover: insert the needle, from the inside to the outside

of the signature, through station 1. Pull the thread through the station, leaving a tail of 6-8cm. Next, wrapping the thread around the edge of the cover, insert the needle from the back to the front in station 1 of the cover only. Bring the thread between the signature and the cover and sew through the same hole in the cover a second time, then back between. This makes a double-threaded wrap around the edge of the cover, where the needle will be on the outside between the

signature and the cover. Insert the

    needle back

into the signature at station 1, from the outside to the inside.

Pass the needle through the signature (inside to outside) at station 2. Again,

wrap the thread around the edge of the cover and sew from the outside to the inside of the matching station on the back cover only, pass the needle and thread between the signature and the cover, and repeat for a double-threaded wrap, and pass the needle back into the signature at station 2. Continue this process for the remaining ten sewing stations, ending with the needle on the inside of the signature at station 12.

Sewing the text block: Sew a running stitch from station 12 to station 1 (out

at 11, in at 1O, out at 9, and so on) through the signature only, using the same sewing stations as for the back cover. This makes fve long stitches on the outside of the signature with the needle on the outside at station 1.

Hold the next signature (from the back of the text block) frmly against the one

just sewn. Insert the needle, outside to inside, through station 1 of the next signature, and bring it back out at station 2. Pass the needle under the long stitch visible on the previous signature from top to bottom, and then enter the new signature at station 3. This is the frst link stitch. Now, bring the needle out at station 4, link with the long stitch below and enter the new signature at station 5. Bring the needle out at station 6, but this time do not link: instead simply enter again at station 7, leaving a long stitch on the outside between 6 and 7. Finish sewing through station 12, creating two more link stitches between stations 8-9 and 1O-11. This will result in the needle outside station 12.

Before attaching the next signature, craft a kettle stitch to bind the

signatures more at the end. Bring the needle around the joining stitch between the previous signature and the cover, leaving a loop. On the outside of the spine, pass the needle through the loop, from inside to outside, and pull snug.

Attach the next signature in the same way as before, but this time beginning

at station 12. Enter at 12, come back out at 11. Work a link stitch by passing the needle over the link stitch below and coming back up under the thread of the leftmost side, enter the signature at station 1O. Repeat between stations 9-8. Work a long stitch between 7-6. Finish

sewing to station 1 with link stitches as before. End with a kettle stitch around the joining stitch of the previous signature. Continue adding signatures in this manner. Remember, when working from left to right (station 1 to station 12), the needle should pass under the previous stitch from top to bottom. When working right to left (station 12 to station 1) the needle should pass over the previous stitch and then come under from bottom to top.

Gathering long stitches: To gather the long stitches together in groups, every fourth

row is modifed slightly between stations 6 and 7. Before re-entering the signature at the end of the long stitch, pass the needle under the three long stitches worked in previous signatures, and over the thread from the current signature, then enter the signature at the next station. Pull the knot created carefully snug in the centre to gather the stitches together, and then continue on.

Attaching the front cover: At the end of the last signature, the needle should be

on the outside of the spine at either station 1 or station 12, depending on how many signatures have been used. Pass the needle from outside to inside through the matching station on the front cover. As with the back cover, wrap the needle around the edge of the cover between the cover and the last signature, and through the same station again,

creating a double-thread wrap. Work a kettle stitch around the joining stitch of the two signatures directly below and then enter the last signature again at the same station. Pull the text block and cover snug, but carefully so as not to break the thread. Bring the needle out at the next station and repeat double wrap the thread around the cover, kettle stitch below and back into the signature all the way to the last signature, resulting in the needle inside the signature.

To fnish the book, tie a square knot securely around the long stitch immediately next to

where the needle has entered the signature. Trim the tail. Back at station 1, in the frst signature sewn, use the tail left to tie another square knot in the same way, and trim the tail. Stamp a title on paper, trim to ft and insert in a Santoro metal frame. Attach to the front cover and youve fnished!

Getting value for money is important when buying craft supplies and, in my opinion, you certainly get that with the Creativity Essentials stamp sets. There are lots of pieces in each pack, making them really versatile. Create a complete scene or add a fnishing touch using smaller elements. Here, I used part of a larger image with basic masking techniques to create different effects with the same stamp. Ive kept the cards simple, using stamps and dyes with a limited colour palette to create elegant woodland designs.
