Location and Access
The Sachigo River property is located at Lat. 54 0 30'
40" North, Long. 91 0 24' 30" West, NTS 53 J 11 approximately
260 miles north of Red Lake, Ontario
Mobilization for this project was via Red Lake and air
transportation was by single engine Otter supplied by Green's
Airways of Red Lake.
General Property Description
Sachigo Property is 16 mining claims numbered KRL 510205
to KRL 510209 inclusive, and KRL 503358, to KRL 503368 inclu
sive, in Aljo Lake area, District of Kenora.
The topography of the area is low and flat overlain by
a moderate thickness {less than 50 feet) of glacial till and
recent lacustrine deposits. Glacial stria are generally south-
west.
Vegetation consists of black spruce, tamarack, and alders
in the swampy area and spruce, poplar and white birch in the
better drained areas closer to bedrock.
The lakes on the property are drained via Sherman Lake
and the Sachigo River system.
Geological Setting
The Sachigo River property is located in the Blackbear
River - Ellard Lake metavolcanic metasedimentary belt. The
belt was originally mapped by Meen in 1936 and again by Bennet
1967 as part of Operation Lingman Lake. The belt is 55 miles
long, approximately 3 1/2 miles wide and consists of mafic
p * * m 4*

metavolcanic rocks, 15% felsic metavolcanic rocks and 5 *
metasedimentary rock.
These rocks are disposed about a steeply dipping mono
cline or tight isoclinally folded synform.
Diamond Drilling
A total of 2000 feet of IAX diamond drilling was com
pleted on the Sachigo property between the dates of March
19th and April 9th, 1983. This footage represents six holes
drilled from five seperate setups.
The drilling contractor was W.G. Langley Ltd. of Brampton,
Ontario and was done under the supervision of R.P. Seyler, BSc.
Results
Hole SA-83-1 co-ordinates 14+OOE 6,OOS of the headframe.
Azimuth 020 0 Dip-50 0 was undertaken to test a VLF-EM anom
aly found during the 1980 survey by LAC MINERALS.
The hole intersected a quartz-feldspar porphyry intru
sive rock and mafic volcanic rock. Quartz carbonate veining
with minor sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite) occur in the
mafic volcanic rocks adjacent to quartz-feldspar porphyry.
The zones of veining were generally in the order of 3 to 4
inches wide.
Volcanic rocks are coarse and fine crystalline flows and
tuffaceous horizons predominately mafic in composition with
a minor rhyloitic tuff horizon l foot wide occuring near
the bottom of the hole.
No gold mineralization was encountered in this hole.
.. .3
-3-
The conductor source is unknown.
Holes SA-83-2 and SA-83-3 were drilled at co-ordinates
5+50 south, 3+60 east of the headframe azimuth 020 0 dips -45*
and -60 0 respectively.
Hole SA-83-2 at 145 feet encountered a biotite-carbon-
ate-rich sheared tuff. The drill bit lost water circulation
at this point and melted. On close examination of the bit
remains, copper and an unknown metal were found. The hole
was continued to 249.5 feet and then stopped. Hole SA-83-3
was then started and intersected a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-
rich sheared tuff at 159 to 161 feet.
A bedded tuff with minor quartz, pyrite and chalcopy
rite was also encountered in both holes and contains up
to .016 oz/ton of Au over l foot.
The apparent dip of the strata is 60 0 to the south.
Of interest is a re-examination of the geophysical sur
vey data of Flint Rock Mines circa 1961. A conductor was
found and a hole was planned in this area but was never under
taken.
Hole SA-83-4 was drilled to test for a western exten
sion of the orebody. Co-ordinates 1+50 south 7+00 west of
the head frame, azimuth 015, dip -45 0 .
This hole encountered bedded mafic and felsic tuffs,
and a chert bearing horizon. Pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopy
rite and minor galena occur along a fracture plane at the
bottom of the hole.
A 3 foot section of quartz stringers in a pyritic tuff
assayed 0.100 oz/ton gold.
* * * * *M
-4-
This hole also encountered major faulting and weath
ering and was abondoned due to caving from 80 to 101 feet.
Hole SA-83-5 co-ordinates 0+20 south, 7+00 west, azi
muth 015 0 cip -45 0 was undertaken to continue the northern
extension of hole SA-83-4. The hole was collared a few feet
south of the northshore of Foster Lake.
The top 28 feet was overburden and from 28 feet to 83
feet intensely weathered volcanic rock was encountered This
intense weathering is mentioned by Edwards, March 1944 pg. 141
and shall be discussed again in the Economic geology section
of this report.
Silicification and epidotization accompanied by dissemin
ated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite were encountered in proximity
to a zone of quartz veins. The quartz veins are accompanied
by coarse pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite and are similar to the
quartz Edwards discribes as type 3 (March 1944, pg. 142).
In the same general area, flow tops in fine crystalline
volcanic rocks are silicified and accompanied by pyrite, pyr
rhotite and chalcopyrite. A minor pyrrhotite bearing iron
formation was encountered from 310 to 310.2 feet.
No gold mineralization was encountered in this hole.
Hole SA-83-6 co-ordinates 2+60 south, 26+70 west azi
muth 360 0 , dip -45 0 was drilled to test the up ice direction
of a gold basal till anomaly and coincident VLF EM anomaly.
This hole encountered predominatly mafic flow, mafic
tuff and feldspar porphyry intrusive rock in the upper 350
feet. The lower portion of the hole intersected mainly inter
mediate tuff.
* * * * J
-5-
The conductor is probably sulphides encountered be
tween 284 and 390 feet.
No gold mineralization was encountered in this hole.
Economic Geology
The economic geology of the Sachigo River Mine area is
discussed by Edwards 1944, and is summarized below;
Vein No. l occurs in a diorite plug on the southeast
side of Foster Lake and is composed of a sugar quartz vein
450 feet in length containing chalcopyrite and pyrite. The
vein averages 0.30 ounces per ton gold over 2.5 feet.
The number 2 "vein" produced all the gold mineral on
the property and was composed of narrow glassy quartz string
ers seperated by schist or fine grained chocolate coloured
dacite prophyry with blue quartz eyes. The zone was con
tained between a massive coarse grained flow in the foot
wall and a very fine grained hanging wall flow.
Three different types of quartz veining are mentioned;
1. Blue grey quartz veins where very fine gold occurs near the vein contacts and within fractures in the quartz.-assayed up to 25 ounces per ton.-quartz carried abundant, pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalco pyrite.
2. White quartz veins with fine gold near the vein contacts The quartz carried much pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalco pyrite.
3. Clear, friable glassy quartz veins. "Mineralization was scant to the point of total absence and was al most exclusively confined to the pyrite. Rare phases appeared having chalcopyrite and galena as the sul phide.... Gold distribution was as coarse flakes and chunks located almost exclusively on the contacts with the dacites". Assay values depended on the presence or absence of coarse gold.
. . . . 6
-6-
Edwards goes on to mention the controls on gold mineral
ization.
1. Dacites within the upper mine levels.
2. A local fold producing open space.
3. A older dyke of biotite diorite which made the "ore porphries" dip south below the sixth level?
He also mentions that the ore grade drops off signifi
cantly below the upper zone of weathering.
Edwards concluded that ore bodies of the number 2 vein
were deposited:
1. only when the dacite porphyry was present.
2. only when a suitable opening was present. This latter requirement being fulfilled by the local folding of the strata.
More recently Valliant (1980) concluded that the gold min
eralization is in part sedimentary and accumulated during a
haitus in volcanism. The schistose rock is a mixture of tuff
aceous material and chemically precipitated clay minerals.
Gold bearing conformable lenses are recrystallized chert
beds.
Meen 1937 did a limited amount of polished section work
in order to determine the genetic relationships of mineraliza
tion within vein number 2. His results are"... the order of
mineralization appears to be as follows: quartz and pyrite;
and a latter quartz, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and gold. The
last three seem to be contemporaneous and are probably the
same age as the later quartz."
Discussion and Interpretation
From examination of strata within the vicinity of the
mine area plus pulbished data (Meen, 1937; Edwards, 1944;
* * * * l
-7-
Valliant, 1980) it would appear that the gold mineraliza
tion is indeed contemporaneous with the deposition of the
volcanic and volcano-sedimentary strata and that is was re-
concentrated by intrusions, folding and weathering.
DDK's SA83-2,3,4, and 5 have an abundance of tuffs both
mafic and intermediate plus evidence of felsic components
having been re-crystallized to quartz-rich rock.
Hole SA83-4 contains a chert horizon, felsic tuffs and
trace galena.
A quartz vein similar to Edwards type 3 with pyrrhotite
and chalcopyrite is located in hole SA-83-5. Silica flooding
with accompanying pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is also found
in this hole.
The weathering which Edward's disucsses in his paper
would appear to underlie the northwest arm of Foster Lake
coincident with a northwest-trending fault.
The origin of gold at the mine appears to be the result
of syngenetic volcanic processess and has been re-concentrated
due to later dacitic intrusions, folding and recent weather
ing.
A hypothetical sequence of events forming the deposit
would be:
1. The intrusion of the so-called dacite into the gold bearing tuffaceous and chert horizon with an accom panying re-crystallization of felsic units to quartz and re-concentration of gold.
2. Folding of the sequence accompanied by development of schists, fracturing of quartz and crystalliza tion of felsic units removed from the intrusive dacite. This would explain shearing observed in the dacite, gold filled fractures of quartz type l and the formation of so called quartz type 3.
. . . . o
-8-
3. Faulting and subsequent weathering within the ore body with a further re-concentration of gold.
The concentration of gold due to weathering processess
is quite common in the near surface gold deposits,
of Coolgardie, Australia and Ghana in the Gold Coast of
Africa.
The migration of silica and base metal bearing solutions
out of felsic units due to metamorphic processes may explain
the silica flooding found in hole SA-83-5.
The lack of ore bearing horizons to the immediate east,
west and bottom of the deposit would appear to be the result
of structural pinch out of the horizon.
Conclusions and Recommendations
1. No major gold intersections were encountered during this drilling project.
2. Gold mineralization outside 'the mine workings is encoun tered mainly in pyritic tuffs of an intermeidate to fel sic composition.
3. Should a diamond drill again be placed on this property one hole should be drilled from a setup located south of SA-83-4 and drilled at an azimuth 015 and a dip of 55 0 or 60 0 . Such a hole would hopefully be able to avoid the caving conditions encountered in hole SA-83-4.
