introductionOFF ALL THE BOOKS IN THE WORLD, THE BEST STORIES ARE FOUND BETWEEN THE PAGES OF A PASSPORT

Thank you for downloading The Ultimate Packing Checklist. Having invested in your D&D Toiletry Bag, you are obviously on the move to explore the world. Getting out from home and into the wider world, though, is not always as easy as it looks.

If you would like a helping hand in making the right decisions, then this helpful little guide is just for you. Our main aim here is simple; to help you plan a travel arrangement for a whole host of different trips.

Not every trip needs the same equipment. A weekend city trip will require less preparation and equipement than camping for a month in the wilderness. We’ll try and break down the most important features for a basic trip to a city, the beach, going camping, handling children and hand luggage and even what toiletries you might need to bring with you.

All of this should go some way to helping you to stay well in command of your trip. Knowing what to bring and what to buy when you are on a trip is very important. It can help you to avoid wasting money and investing in items you may not even need, and is surely likely to make the whole trip a lot easier to plan out.

Simply have a look through this guide and take a look at the section that best fits your needs. We’ll make sure that the next time you board a plan that you are going to be taking an impressive and enjoyable journey with everything you will need.

We have tried to make this guide work for a wide range of people and preferences. As a result we may suggest items that you do not need, but we wanted to be as inclusive as possible. In addition we have added room at the bottom on each list to add your own personal items, so you can customize them to fit your personal needs.

Let’s start off then, by taking a look at the preparations before your trip and the essentials that we advise you to bring on any trip.

LUCK FAVORS THE PREPARED

Here are a few things that are important to take care of before you leave, so you can start your journey well prepared.

First, make sure that you research your destination so that you are aware of entry/exit requirements, visas, laws, customs, medical care and road safety. In addition, some vaccinations may be required for you to travel to certain places. Next it is important that you check whether your passport is still in date. Passport requirements vary by country. To be safe, make sure that your passport is valid for six months beyond the end of your trip.

We advise you to make copies of your Passport or ID card, your holiday itinerary and other important documents. Pack these copies in a different place than the originals, to make sure any loss/theft is not crippling to your enjoyment. You can also email scanned versions of these documents to yourself, or upload them to the cloud, so you have digital access via the internet. Another good precaution is to save important numbers (local embassy, insurance, bank, credit card provider, hotels, etc.) in your phone before you leave.

When you are traveling abroad you don’t always have reliable internet connection. There are apps available that allow you to download a map of your destination ahead of time and store it on your smartphone. That way, you can always find your way around. A great free option is Maps.me

To leave your home well prepared, make sure that you inform neighbors and friends of your trip, and leave keys and itinerary with them. Arrange for pet and plant care, and stop routine deliveries such as milk and newspapers. If you will be away for more than a few days make sure that you clean out the fridge, to avoid any unpleasant surprises when you return home.

One of the best ways to protect your home while you’re away is to appear you never left. A programmable light switch timer makes your lights switch on and off at random times in the morning and evening; which creates the illusion of people being at home.

On the day you leave, turn down the thermostats and lock all doors, windows and the garage. Now you have everything prepared to go on vacation with ease of mind. Bon voyage!

STAYING CLEAN ON THE ROAD

toiletries for travel

Toiletries are essential for any of the journeys mentioned in this book. When it comes to packing, we find that toiletries are one of the most personal aspects of the packing list. Because people have vastly different preferences, we have made a separate toiletries checklist; which you can combine with any of the other packing lists.

Whereas some people may get away with just a toothbrush and a bar of soap, others absolutely can’t leave home without their hair straightener, makeup kit and eye serum. In addition, your needs may depend heavily on the type of trip that you will go on. Therefore please read through the suggested checklist and customize it to your personal preferences.

Before you leave home it is a good idea to research your destination, especially if you are travelling abroad. Depending on the location and type of journey you will take, it can be advisable to bring specific medications or first aid items with you. In addition, some vaccinations may be required for you to travel to certain places.

Once you have decided which items to take it is important that you pack them properly for your trip. Ever reach into your carry-on bag and discover a pool of goo has leaked out of your toiletries compartment? A great way to prevent this is to add a layer of plastic wrap under the twisting cap of your shampoo bottles. There’s little to no work involved, and it will prevent your toiletries from exploding all over each other. In a similar fashion you can put a cotton ball or pad in your powdered makeup to keep it from breaking.

If you are traveling by plane and will only bring a carry-on bag, you must make sure that you adhere to the TSA guidelines for liquids. You are allowed to bring one quart-sized clear zip-top plastic bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less per item. There are some exceptions if you have special needs or children. You may bring prescription and over the counter medicines, baby formula, breast milk and other essential liquids in quantities larger than 3.4 ounces. Please present these items to security officers at the checkpoint, because they may require alternative screening.

If you travel a lot, it can also be a good idea to have a dedicated set of toiletries that you keep exclusively for traveling. A popular method is to store full sized toiletries with your luggage, so you always have the right brand of product on hand to refill your travel sized containers. Of other items you can buy doubles, such as floss, travel size deodorant, razor and a toothbrush. This will significantly reduce the time it takes to pack for each trip, without compromising on comfort.

The Ultimate Packing Checklist

Getting packed up for a short city break is, in the main, fairly straightforward. Seen as you are going to be surrounded by amenities in the city and plenty of opportunities to grab short-term items, there is no needs to pack a lot of extras “just in case”. However, there are still some rather important items that you should look to bring with you, including:

Grabbing the essentials. Make sure you bring passports, additional identification and medication that you might need, alongside items such as your wallet, phone and chargers. Also, bring any toiletries that you use; you can usually get mini-sized travel editions from your local pharmacy. For a full overview you can have a look at our “essentials” and “toiletries” packing lists.

When packing for a short citytrip, always try and be quite light and bring a bag that gives you plenty of space. This ways you have room for any souvenirs you may pick up along the way. If possible we recommend that you stick to a carry-on bag only, because this will save you a lot of time at the airport. If you do have to check in your bag it is always a good idea to add a ‘fragile’ sticker to it. This will ensure that your bag will be handled with extra care, and it is placed on the top of the stack so it will be one of the first bags emerging at the luggage claim.

In terms of clothing, try to pick items that you can layer and that mix and match well, so you can adjust your outfits for various circumstances. We also recommend that you bring a nice outfit for the evening, as most cities offer plenty of opportunity to go out and have a good time. If you want to keep your clothes smelling fresh for longer you can add a dryer sheet to your bag.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to find pickpockets in larger cities. If you are going to the city and will be doing a fair bit of sight seeing, either bring two wallets/purses with you, or hide your valuables in a hidden object. A second wallet is a good decoy for handing over a small proportion of your money, while chapstick and other easily sealed containers can hold your bank notes and other valuables well hidden from praying eyes.

With these tips you will surely have a lovely trip. On the following pages you can the full packing list for your citytrip.

TRAVELING COMFORTABLY ON A SHOESTRING

surviving economy class

With today’s budget airlines long distance travel is no longer just reserved for the lucky few. Cheap flights have opened up the world for us, and getting to experience all these destinations is like magic. However, getting there is probably less so. With these tips we will help you to survive and thrive in economy class.

First off, make sure that you know what the allowed size and weight of your carry-on bag is. If you go over this, you can either be rejected or pay hefty excess fees. Some airlines allow you to have a small handbag next to your carry-on suitcase whereas other don’t, so make sure that you plan accordingly.

When you start packing your hand luggage first make sure you get the essentials in there, such as you passport and ID, visa(s), money, phone and (copies of) other important documents. Of course, don’t forget your itinerary and tickets, and bring a pen for fill our any forms at the customs and/or immigration offices.

The air in planes can often be quite dry and cold, so bringing some eye drops, moisturizer and a warm scarf of blanket can significantly improve your comfort. Some airlines will provide a travel pillow and blanket on long-haul flights, but you can also consider bringing your own. If you want to sleep during the flight a set of ear plugs and a sleeping mask are nice to have too.

To keep feeling fresh bring a small toiletry kit with you that includes items such as face wipes, tissues, lip balm and a toothbrush. Please keep in mind that any liquids or gels that you bring in your carry-on have to be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, which are placed in a quart-sized clear zip-top plastic bag. When selecting your outfit it is best to choose clothes that can be layered to accommodate varying temperatures and that are made of comfortable and crease-free materials. For long-haul flights a pair of warm socks are nice to give your feet a break from your shoes. If the climate at your destination is very different, we advise you to bring a second outfit so you can change after arrival.

Nowadays most airlines offer some form of inflight entertainment. However we recommend that you also bring some entertainment of your own in case it is not working or if you don’t like the movie selection. There are plenty of ways to entertain yourself on a long flight, including listening to music, reading books and magazines, doing puzzles and playing games.

BECAUSE HAPPINESS COMES IN WAVES

beach holiday

Trips to the beach can be enormous fun; making memories with friends and family is priceless, and enjoying relaxation and recreational time is something we all need. However, some preparation is required to ensure that your next sand and surf trip is the best it can ever be.

Apart from the essentials like your passport, wallet and phone there are several beach specific items that you should bring. First of all, make sure you pack the right clothing for the occasion. You will need plenty of light clothes for the heat of the day, including swimwear, sundresses and shorts. However, don’t forget to pack a few warmer items as well, because the evenings can still be quite chilly, even in summer. Keep your accessories fun and simple; and leave any top quality jewelry at home because it can easily get lost or damaged at the beach.

Hotels will often provide towels for the beach or pool. Otherwise, we recommend you to consider taking a hammam towel instead of a regular beach towel. They take up a lot less space in your luggage, are light weight, fast drying and double as a sarong.

Though it is lovely to spend a day in the sun, make sure that you bring protection against harmful UV rays. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must, but also sunburn relief and a sunshade are advisable. If possible opt for waterproof sunscreen; or remember to reapply after a dip in the sea or pool.

Another unexpected beach bag essential is baby powder. After a long day of re-applying sunscreen and diving into the ocean, you’re bound to have fixed a great deal of sand to your limbs - and attempting to brush it off with your towel will only get you so far. For a much more effective sand solution, shake out a bit of the powder onto your hand and use it to brush the sand off the rest of your body.

If you want to bring your smartphone, then you can protect it from sand and water by putting it inside a zip-top bag – the touchscreen will still work through the plastic. Keys can be protected by attaching a floatation device (such as a cork) so they don’t sink to the bottom of the ocean if you accidentally drop them.

An empty, cleaned sunscreen bottle is the ultimate decoy to keep valuable items away from prying eyes. Simply rinse out a discarded bottle thoroughly to store money, keys and anything else you might need for a relaxing day out. Alternatively, if you have small children with you, you can also put valuables inside a rolled up diaper. People will assume it is dirty and won’t go near it, for obvious reasons.

The Ultimate Packing Checklist

GET READY FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS

camping essentials

Heading into the wilderness for the weekend? Then you need to make sure that you have packed up and prepared for it accordingly. Let’s take a look at some of the essentials:

For camping you likely won’t need things like IDs or passports but we’d recommend having them tucked away somewhere just in case. If you get lost or are in need of help, they can be very useful for identification. Make sure you do some research into where you will be camping, so you know what the conditions of the terrain and weather will be like. Also, check if you have to take any precautions for the local wildlife.

Your choice of clothes will depend heavily on the expected weather conditions. As a general rule of thumb opt for practical clothes that can be layered for warmth and always bring a waterproof layer as well. Even when you expect the weather will be good it can get quite chilly at night. Clothes that are made of moisture wicking fabrics are great because they keep you dry and warm. Wool is another good option because unlike most fabrics it will keep you warm even when wet. Also make sure that you pick a sleeping mat and bag that are appropriate for the weather conditions you will be camping in.

In terms of the actual camp there are several items you will need to bring. Ideally, you’ll want to set up your tent beforehand and check for wear and tear, and to make sure that all the poles and stakes are there. Not necessary but highly recommended is a groundsheet – the tarp-like material for under your tent. It helps avoid wear and tear to the bottom of the tent and provides another layer of insulation.

Next, pack all the cooking gear that you will need, as well as any food and drinks. Bring a camping stove with fuel (get the kind that is appropriate for the kind of camping experience you will be embarking on) along with the necessary cookware and utensils. Try to stick to the basics here; and where possible check if there are lightweight options available. If you are camping in an area with large wildlife you should bring a bin to safely store your food – in some national parks they are even mandatory.

Bring the toiletries that you need; we advise to stick to the essentials and opt for biodegradable products where possible. When camping in nature a first aid kit along with basic medications is indispensable; as you may not have professional medical care nearby if something happens.

There is a good reason that the Boy Scout motto is “be prepared”. With all the above, you should be all set for a great camping trip.

The Ultimate Packing Checklist

When you are travelling with a small child the sheer volume of items that you need to bring with you can feel quite dizzying. We recommend that you consider the following: First off, get copies of all of your IDs and passports made up. Ensure you have both a physical copy, the real thing and a digital, high-quality copy that you can find in your e-mails via smartphone. Load up with small child essentials, and make sure you have everything you need for diaper changes, nap time, feeding and transportation. This includes making sure that all medication and health-based equipment is within reach mid-travel.

Clothes, socks and shoes should all be packed at a rate of 1-2 outfits each per day. Yes, it will take up a fair amount of space but if you roll it all together instead of folding it all up, you can make space for all of these clothes easily. If you are traveling with the entire family we recommend that you spread everyone’s clothes out in different suitcases, in case – heaven forbid – one goes missing. Make sure you always have a change of clothes in your hand luggage as well, in case of any accidents.

Get some quality shampoos – the kind your baby loves – and invest in little travel bottles. Familiarity is vital as it will be more likely to make your child be open to bath time when you are on the road. This same rule goes for everything; make sure you child has enough familiar items to make travelling less daunting. Depending on your child’s age it is also a good idea to involve them in the packing process, as a way of mentally preparing them for the trip ahead and to prevent tantrums later caused by ‘forgotten items’.

Of course, make sure that your child has his or her favorite toy, stuffed animal or lovely on hand at all times. Traveling can be quite exiting for young children, so they need something familiar to help them feel safe. In addition, bring a few practical/small toys to keep them entertained on the road (involve them in picking a toy, so they will have something they like). You can even bring an ‘extra’ toy they don’t know about which you can give to them as a surprise. Giving children their own (robust, child-friendly) camera encourages them to observe their surroundings and focus on what interests them. You might be surprised at the results from their knee-high view. Get ready for pictures of feet and wheels, flowers, animals, helicopters, boats, rocks and rabbit poo.

If you are staying in a hotel room with small children, it is important to childproof the room. Ask before you leave home whether childproofing equipment is available at your hotel. Many hotels and resorts offer childproofing supplies along with cribs and highchairs. Bring your own childproofing equipment if the hotel doesn’t provide everything you need, like socket protectors and table corner covers. Alternatively you can

also pack a roll of masking tape. It can cover electrical outlets, fasten a washcloth to a sharp table corner and secure cabinet doors so tiny hands can’t open them.

Get water bottles and bring some food that your child recognizes with you if you can; like treats and snacks to keep morale high. Children are famously impatient travelers, and they might not be too keen to try out food from elsewhere (at first). Use this to help pacify them and keep them onside. Water bottles are vital as drinking water abroad can lead to illness and upset stomachs.

Take the time to be careful about your planning and to pack everything into the bag, and life will become much easier. It may take some time to prepare everything, but exploring the world with your little one(s) will be well worth it!
