MiSSion introduce chinese liquor Baijiu to the uS

cosmopolitan culture by developing branding

and marketing solutions.

proceSS in the year and half of working on my thesis,

i went to china twice to hunt for distill-

eries: from the family owned local business,

to the state owned national distillery, which

was guarded by the chinese army. although at

some places no photos were permitted and the

guards were strict, i was still able to gener-

ate a lot of original photographs as well as

learn about each stage of making Baijiu: from

fermentation, to mashing, to distillation.

in order to find out how my target audience

would respond to Baijiu, i held numerous tas-

tings and worked with different mixologists in

San francisco.

after countless bottles and endless mixtures,

we created several drinks based on the adven-

turous level of the drinkers.

different chinese mythologies and folktales

were studied intensively after i decided to

market Baijiu as the "ancient drink" created

in the mysterious southwest china. later, the

magic monkey king was picked as the brand

spirit.

deliveraBleThe brand havoc was finally distilled at the

end from all my researches and studies as

the deliverable for my thesis. i created a

fictional distillery as well as developed

a three-step market plan to introduce this

ancient drink from china.

creating a set of promotional materials for a

film festival which features films shot by the

Spanish filmmaker pedro almodovar.

approach almodovar was heavily influenced by old holly-

wood movies in which the plot revolves around

a female main character, who often struggles in

tough situations.

Struggling females inspired me to photograph

feminine objects in harsh environments, which

developed into lipstick drawings in the dark

corners of the city. Those lipstick drawings

eventually evolved into expressive illustra-

tions, which was the final direction i felt

strong enough for the project.

internationally known Spanish filmmaker of his

generation. his films are marked by complex

narratives, employ the codes of melodrama and

use elements of pop culture, popular songs,

décor. desire, passion, family and identity

are among almodóvar’s most prevalent themes.

he has become a major figure on the stage of

world cinema.

he says that films are very entertaining. "it's

important not to forget that films are made to

entertain. That's the key."

This short film is done to encourage people to

disconnect themselves from social media which

distract them from reaching their inner selves

sometimes. it is inspired by a quote from the

writer Milan kundera of the czech republic "By

pursuing solitude, we then could maybe enjoy the

sweet absence of those looks we live under. "

approach

The heart in the film is a metaphor for "inner

self". it begins with clogged social media con-

nections, and then cleanses by disconnecting

and finally becomes the birthing ground for

inner beauty. "don't be afraid, you have just

got your eyes closed" by the icelandic band

Mum was the soundtrack used in the film.

goal

The inspiration of the poster was "fake

empire", a song by Brooklyn-based indie rock

band The national. Mark Mordue of waToday

said "fake empire is a romantic-sounding tune

marked by a quiet declaration that 'we're

half awake in a fake empire,' which married

the lonely-guy blues of a new york night to a

veiled critique of american imperialism."

approach

i tried to capture the idea of "being lost in

a dream city" with experimental type treatment.

after numerous attempts at using different

materials such as bubble wrap, old cardboard

boxes, baby oil, live humans and other objects,

i finally decided that the type created with an

overhead projector and hair gel brought a

certain sense of emptiness and loneliness to

the poster.

This poster is inspired by the song "fade into

you" from alternative rock/dream pop group

Mazzy Star, which often features psychedelic

guitar drones and hints of blues and folk.

approach

i photographed dried flowers soaked in chemilu-

minescence in the dark to create the background

to convey the dreamy/psychedelic mood. The

type was hand-done with needles, so when held

against light, the title for the poster fades

into the background.

goal

create a poster for the movie le rayon vert

(The green ray), by french director eric rohmer.

The movie is about an unhappy, picky and soc-

ially awkward girl searching for the man of her

dreams. She believes when one sees a rare green

flash at sunset — our own thoughts and those

of others are revealed as if by magic. finally

she meets a young man. She goes with him and

they observe le rayon vert.

approach

Soft petals were used in the photo illustration

to symbolize the fragility of the main charac-

ter. i used a crystal to create the green light

refraction at first. however that direction

seemed too literal and wasn't appropriate for

the movie. eventually, by scanning the petals

and placing them on a vintage green wallpaper i

was able to find a better solution.

The slender type with different arrows was cre-

ated to hint at her terrible indecisiveness and

was inspired by vintage french cigarette ads.

This poster is dedicated to the film Boys don't

cry directed by kimberly peirce. it is a dra-

matization of the real-life story of Brandon

Teena, a biologically born female who identi-

fied herself as a man and as inter-sexed, who

pursues a relationship with a young woman.

later Teena was beaten, raped and murdered by

his male acquaintances after they discover he

is anatomically female.

approach

The film explores the themes of freedom, cour-

age, identity and empowerment, but was also

brutal and disturbing. i felt the responsibil-

ity of communicating such feelings, hence the

choice of props used.

tory and exploration of popular music located

The frank gehry–designed building is located

on the campus of the Seattle center. however,

it has been struggling financially due to it's

goal

design a book for some absurd and old chil-

dren's nursery rhythms.

approach

Since the subject was bizarre and rather curi-

ous, i approached it in a fun and unusual way.

it eventually evolved into a fun book featuring

death's side jobs (instead of killing humans he

kills minor beings such as flowers and fruits)

narrated through nursery rhythms.

introduce a line of fine french tea le palais

des Thés to the u.S.

le palais des Thés started out when françois-

xavier delmas, at the head of a group of for-

ty-five tea enthusiasts, decided to create

their own business in 1986. one goal: democ-

ratize tea and help the occident to learn more

about its cultural and gastronomical aspects.

The first shops opens in the 6th arrondissement

of paris.

The aim for the packaging was to connect the

buyers to beautiful boutique tea shops in paris

in a humorous and modern way.
