OPTIMIZED IDLE USER MANUAL

INTRODUCTION TO OPTIMIZED IDLE

Optimized Idle with DDEC softwarereduces engine idle time by runningthe engine only when required.Optimized Idle is a system whichautomatically stops and restarts theengine to accomplish the following:

□ Keep the engine oil temperaturebetween factory set limits

□ Keep the battery charged

□ Keep the cab/sleeper or passengerarea at the desired temperature(using the optional thermostat)

Idle time and fuel savings informationis available through DDEC Reports.Other benefits include overallreduction in exhaust emissions andnoise, and improved starter and enginelife (by starting a warm engine andeliminating starting aids). The systemalso reduces dead batteries due toelectrical loads, such as refrigeratorsor satellite systems. Optimized Idleoperates in one of two modes:

□ Engine Mode

□ Thermostat Mode (includes thesame features as Engine Mode)

Engine Mode is used to keep thebattery charged and the engine oiltemperature between factory setlimits. The Optimized Idle ActiveLight is illuminated whenever EngineMode is active.

Thermostat Mode is used to keepthe cab/sleeper (on--highway truck)and passenger area (coach) at thedesired temperature and maintainthe Engine Mode parameters. Theoptional thermostat must be turnedON for Thermostat Mode to be active. The Optimized Idle Active Light isilluminated whenever ThermostatMode is active.

DDEC software allows the enginebrakes to be turned on duringshutdown. The amount of enginebraking is determined by thedash--mounted engine brake switches.Braking during shutdown reduces cabshake.

OPERATING OPTIMIZED IDLE

OPERATING OPTIMIZED IDLE

The following conditions must be metto activate Optimized Idle:

□ The ignition switch must be inthe “ON” position and the engineidling

□ Hood, cab, or engine compartmentdoor(s) closed

□ Transmission in neutral and inhigh--range (if equipped)

□ Park brake set

□ Idle Shutdown Timer must beenabled

NOTE:Keep vehicle park brake properlymaintained.

If this vehicle is equipped with CruiseControl, the Cruise Master Switchmust be moved to the “ON” positionafter the vehicle is idling and theabove conditions are set. If the CruiseMaster Switch is on prior to thevehicle idling, turn it to “OFF.” Turnthe Cruise Master Switch to “ON”after the vehicle is idling and theabove conditions are met.

NOTE:To disable Optimized Idle, turn off theignition, turn the Cruise Master SwitchOFF, or use the drive away feature(refer to section 2.3). If the engine

is not running, pressing the clutch(optional) will disable Optimized Idle. The Optimized Idle active light is onwhen Optimized Idle is active.

NOTE:The transmission lever should not bemoved while Optimized Idle is active, since this could disable OptimizedIdle. If the lever is moved, verify thatthe transmission is not in gear and thatOptimized Idle is still active.

The engine compartment alarm soundsbriefly prior to any Optimized Idleengine start. After Optimized Idlestarts the engine, the speed will be1000 RPM (900 if equipped withClean Idle option).

Once the above conditions are met:

□ The Optimized Idle active lightwill flash

□ The active light will stop flashingand stay on after the idle shutdowntimer expires

OPTIMIZED IDLE USER MANUAL

The Optimized Idle active lightflashing indicates that Optimized Idlewill begin operation after the idleshutdown timer expires. When theactive light stops flashing and stays on(after the idle shutdown timer expires)the operator can no longer use otherDDEC features, including the footpedal. This condition continues untilthe park brake is released, the hoodor engine compartment door(s) isopened, the transmission is put in gear,or the Cruise Switch is turned off.Optimized Idle may continue to runthe engine to warm--up the engine, orheat (cool) the interior. Optimized Idlewill shut down the engine when thebattery voltage, engine temperature,or cab temperature values are met.The engine will restart only when theECM determines that the engine needsto start to charge the battery, warm theengine, or heat (cool) the interior.

ENGINE MODE

Optimized Idle will stop and restartthe engine only as necessary, to keepengine temperature between 60°F(16°C) and 104°F (40°C) (factoryset limits) and to keep the batterycharged. When Optimized Idle startsdue to low battery voltage (less than12.2 V on a 12 V system, the enginewill run for a minimum of two hours.

For Engine Mode to function, all ofthe conditions listed at the beginningof Chapter 2 must be met. Use the

following procedure to start EngineMode:

1. Start the engine and let it remainidling.

[a] Close and secure the hood, cab or engine compartmentdoor(s).

[b] Put the transmission inneutral and in high-range (ifequipped).

[c] Apply the parking brakes.

2. If you have Cruise Control, turnthe Cruise Master Switch to the“ON” position. If the switch ison, turn it off and on after thevehicle is idling.

3. The Optimized Idle active lightflashes.

4. When the idle shut down timerexpires, the Optimized Idle lightwill stop blinking and remain on.The engine will stop and restartas needed. Optimized Idle is nowin Engine Mode.

NOTE:If the engine does not start after thesecond Optimized Idle attempt, or ifthe vehicle moves while OptimizedIdle is enabled, the Amber WarningLamp (AWL) will turn on to indicatethat Optimized Idle has been disabled(active light will turn off). Theignition must be turned to the “OFF”position, the engine restarted, and the

THERMOSTAT MODE(WITH THE OPTIONALOPTIMIZED IDLETHERMOSTAT)

This mode allows the operator to setthe desired interior temperature andmaintain Engine Mode parameters.

For additional thermostat features, refer to Chapter 3. The OptimizedIdle thermostat is used to determinewhen the engine needs to restart tomaintain the interior temperature. For Thermostat Mode to function, all of the conditions listed in thebeginning of Chapter 2 must be met.Use the following procedure to startThermostat Mode:

1. Start the engine and let it remainidling.

[a] Close and secure the hoodcab, or engine compartmentdoor(s).

[b] Put the transmission inneutral and in high-range (ifequipped).

[c] Apply the parking brake.

2. If you have cruise control, turnthe cruise master switch to the“ON” position. If the switch is

on, turn it off and on after thevehicle is idling.

3. The Optimized Idle active lightflashes.

4. Set the heater or air conditioningto maximum. Set the heater orA/C fan controls on the dash andsleeper area to high. This willminimize engine run time.

5. Turn the thermostat on by pressingany button on the display.

6. Select cool or heat by pressingthe buttons. This must match thesetting on the heating and A/Ccontrols set in step 4.

7. Set the desired interiortemperature.

8. Optimized Idle will now stopand restart the engine, only whenrequired, to keep the interior atthe desired temperature. Whenthe interior requires heating orcooling, the (heat) or (cool) iconwill flash.

9. When the engine starts, it willramp up to 1000 RPM (900 ifequipped with Clean Idle option)and the fan and accessories willturn on approximately 30 secondsafter the engine starts.

The ignitionmust be turned to “OFF”, the enginerestarted, and the conditions in thebeginning of Chapter 2 met in order toenable Optimized Idle.

Continuous Run Condition andExtended Idle Condition

Under normal conditions, the enginewill cycle on and off to keep theinterior at the desired temperature. Two automatic conditions which helpkeep the operator comfortable andreduce engine cycling are described inthe next sections.

Continuous Run Condition

This condition allows the engineto run continuously if the outsidetemperature parameter exceeds thefactory set limits (hot and cold) andthe thermostat set point can not bemet (factory default is 25°F (-3.88°C)for cool mode and 90°F (32°C) forheat mode). When the thermostat is

in the Continuous Run Condition, thetemperature icon will flash along withthe heat or cool icon.

Extended Idle Condition

If the Continuous Run Condition isnot needed and the thermostat setpoint is not met within 45 minutes, theengine will shut down for 15 minutes, restart and run for 15 minutes. This15 minute on and off cycle willcontinue until the thermostat set pointis reached or until the thermostat isturned off.

NOTE:If Optimized Idle enters the extendedidle condition, it may be an indicationthat the heat or cool setting on thethermostat does not match the vehicleheating or cooling system setting. Itcould also be an indication of lowfreon, blockage in the heater system,or system tampering.
