• Neutron Slab System • Compressor Station • Questions?
Foreman: Do you know what the limits are set when you go out? What is the count? How often do you calibrate something like that? For the workers’ safety how often do they check their suits? How do they check to make sure they are safe in case one of those is higher than 20 grams?
Dukes: We took a 12-inch pipe and then figured out the criticality incredible (CI) limit so for a twelve-inch pipe it is 20 grams, which I hope to you guys seems like a small amount. So for a worst case scenario here is the pipe and let us say the detected would read the farthest away from that as we can possibly get it. It would read about 76,000 counts per second. So, what we do is set the actual level for 50,000 counts, which is below the 76,000 and go along the pipe at a speed of one foot per second and if they see anything above that 50,000 count they will mark the spot and bring in a second system and actually quantify. This is our work force and helps us figure out where the deposits are. Then we quantify that amount to see if we need to clean that pipe or if it is safe to leave it where it is. We do it weekly. Then we do quality checks while we are doing the measurements, so depending on what we are measuring and what it is being used for. We do something called a replica every 20 items. We take a measurement then after 20 items we take it again. If we do not get the same exact measurement, then if not it is considered bad and we must start all over. The 20 grams is not for the workers’ protection. They measure the pipe and they do not actually know that is 20 grams at the time they are taking the measurement. That material gets collected then dumped into a computer database, and then the spectrum gets analyzed by a separate specialist. Then they use all these calculations to come up with the gram

When you say clean it, what do you mean? If you find something and you have to clean it, is there check vales all through the system or how does that process work?
amount. It is not to protect them. The 20 grams is to know if that piece of pipe can stay or if we need to cut it out and clean it or dispose of it a different way. The clothes are to protect them from surface contamination. There are areas where they have to have protection on because they are coming in to areas with surfaces that can have contamination on it. That is what the suits are for. When they go in and out of the boundary, there is a piece of equipment there where they scan themselves or go into an automatic scanner. However, they remove the suits first; they do not scan until after they remove that clothing. They have to go to training to see how to take off the suits properly. Decontaminate it take the stuff out, put in a container, and are shipped off. It depends on the system that you are going into. So, you have radioactive and electrical, so we have a lockout/tagout program. You would lock a system out and try to take away some of those things like energy. There is a whole work control process that we use. We use planners and different types of subject matter experts to help plan that work so that we can protect the worker.
Cisco: Is that about the same thing as a geiger counter?
Dukes: A geiger counter is actually a type of detector, but it uses gas.
