As we begin the Year of the Lord 2021, together with Father Alek, I offer appreciation for the thoughtful Christmas gifts and greetings received, and offer best wishes for a year of increased Faith, strengthened Hope, and abundant Love.
“Thank you” to all who helped to make the Christmas celebrations so worthy and dignified. We needed “a little Christmas” after the difficulties of the past year and your efforts and attention to every detail in the areas of decoration and music helped to make it a great celebration.
Join us New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Mass times: On December 31: 4:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. On January 1: 9:00 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church; and Noon at Ss. Simon and Jude Church (this Mass will be live-streamed).

Mass Attendance
THE MASS DURING THE PANDEMIC For the past several months, we have been using a temporary schedule for Masses because of restricted attendance in each space with the required social distancing. Since some may not feel comfortable attending, live-streaming from Ss. Simon and Jude Church will continue to be available on our website. Additionally, those who wish can remain in their cars and tune to FM frequency 96.3 for the entire audio of the Mass. Communion will be distributed outside to those who “attend” Mass from their cars. Our Mass times reflect the necessary space needed for the “sanitizing” of pews and door entrances. Masks are required and must cover nose and mouth. If you are not receiving Communion by hand, but on the tongue, please wait to the end of the line. Please maintain social distancing while waiting in line for communion and only remove your mask briefly to receive. Hand sanitizer is available at the doors of each church. Note: The live-streamed Masses at SSJ will be repeated throughout the day.
OUR NEW PARISH This weekend we will celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. The Gospel story from Luke about the Presentation of the Lord reminds us that Jesus is the light to the world who brings good news to all. As a baptized people, we are to be a people of light and to share good news by our words and deeds. Like his two predecessors, Pope Francis has called for a New Evangelization for the Church today. This means that our mission is to take the message of Jesus to the peripheries of our society and share God’s love and mercy to all we meet. Or, as our Bishop David Zubik has put it, we are to “make friends for Jesus.” Our new parish, St. Raphael the Archangel, officially begins Monday, January 4. Let us pray that our parish will be a true herald of the Gospel.
Join us in prayer as we transition to this new parish. Starting on December 26, please pray our Novena to St. Raphael the Archangel, found on page 17 in this bulletin.
Register to attend Mass at one of our churches. CGScatholic.org
or call the parish office. Please do not attend a Mass in person if you are not registered.
GIVING ONLINE The Parish will be moving to a single vendor for online giving. Current parishioners who utilize on-line or electronic giving will be contacted via email by Our Sunday Visitor.
You will be asked to update your giving profile as soon as possible. If you do not receive a notification from OSV within the next week , call OSV customer Service at 1-800-348-2886 or via email at [email protected]. If you have additional questions, call Tim Thorsen at 412-819-4030.
"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace." - 1 Peter 4:10
Reasons to sign up for Electronic Giving: 1. No need to write checks or bring cash to church. 2. Peace-of-mind knowing that the church is receiving your
contribution even if you are unable to attend. 3. More secure than checks. 4. All contributions are recorded for you on your bank statement with
date of settlement. 5. IT COSTS YOU NOTHING!

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 96: 1- 3, 11-13
THE ORDER OF MASS — CHRISTMAS
FIRST READING | ISAIAH 9:1-6 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood,
will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David's throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING | TITUS 2:11-14
1. Sing to our God a joyful song! Everyone bless God’s name. Tell of God’s wondrous deeds; sing to all the world.
2. Heaven be glad and earth rejoice, let every ocean roar! Every forest, every tree joins the song of joy!
3. Cry out with joy for God has come, come to rule the earth. God will rule the world with love, righteousness and truth.

Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God
and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | LUKE 2:10-11
PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(all genuflect on one knee at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE ORDER OF MASS—CHRISTMAS
GOSPEL | LUKE 2:1-14
I proclaim to you good news of great joy, today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord!
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

FIRST READING | SIRACH 3:2-6, 12-14 God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother.
My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins —a house raised in justice to you.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 128: 1-5
Blessed are all who fear the Lord, and walk in his ways! By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be blessed and prosper.
Your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive around your table.
Indeed thus shall be blessed the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Sion. May you see Jerusalem prosper all the days of your life!

THE ORDER OF MASS—DECEMBER 27
SECOND READING | COLOSSIANS 3:12-21 Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | COLOSSIANS 3:15, 16
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days he has spoken to us through the Son.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton | St. Margaret of Scotland | Ss. Simon and Jude 13
GOSPEL | LUKE 2:22-40 [OR 2:22, 39-40]
[When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, ] just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. [When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.]
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

ARING IVING ERVING For Christians, Christmas is a season, not a day. That season is part of our Liturgical Calendar, and does not coincide with the secular Christmas shopping season that begins the day after Halloween and ends on Christmas Eve! It is unfortunate that people easily get caught up in the material more than the spiritual at Christmas. Every year, it is a popular custom for banks to calculate the actual cost of all the gifts mentioned in the carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” This carol actual-ly has a much deeper, religious origin. This song was a cleverly coded catechism for Catholics in England, who, during the 1500’s were persecuted for practicing their faith. Below, each “gift” is paired with its actual meaning.
A Partridge in a Pear Tree- The One true God revealed in the person of Jesus Christ (partridges will sacrifice their own lives to protect their young).
Two Turtledoves- The Old and New Testaments. Three French Hens- The theological virtues Faith, Hope, and Love. Four Calling Birds- The four Gospels. Five Gold Rings- The Pentateuch (First five Books of the Old Testament). Six Geese A-Laying- The six days of creation. Seven Swans A-Swimming- The seven gifts of the
Holy Spirit. Eight Maids A-Milking- The eight Beatitudes. Nine Ladies Dancing- The nine fruits of the Holy
Spirit. Ten Lords A-Leaping- The 10 Commandments. Eleven Pipers Piping- The 11 Faithful Apostles. Twelve Drummers Drumming- The 12 Points of
Belief in the Apostles’ Creed.
What a gift to Baby Jesus if we all spend a little time joyfully singing this carol and reviewing all it has to teach us about our rich and beautiful Catholic religion this Christmas season!
The Creed A new year, a new parish, and a new opportunity to renew our faith. Soon-to-be St. Raphael the Archangel Parish is pleased to announce a monthly Livestreamed and Zoom event hosted by Fr. Alek Schrenk. Join us on the First Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. for “Wine, Cheese, and The Creed.” Fr. Alek will be our guide on a year long journey through the
prayer by which we profess twelve basic tenets of our Catholic faith, the Apostles’ Creed. We will begin on Thursday, January 7, at 7:00 p.m. with “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.” Stay safe and cozy in your home, have a snack
and beverage of your choice, and join in Fr. Alek’s interactive presentation. All are welcome! If you wish to participate by Livestream only, simply tune into the parish stream on our website on January 7. To receive a link to the
interactive Zoom portion of the course, send an email to [email protected].

IN GRATITUDE Dear SEAS, SMOS, and SSJ parishioners, Thank you one and all for your overwhelming support of the Saint Anthony Project!
In appreciation of YOU, for sharing stories, for your encouraging words and your prayers, for choosing the book, and for your monetary donations, I've requested that a Mass be celebrated in Italy before the end of this year. Arrangements were made with Father Giancarlo Zamengo, OFM Conv. who resides at the Franciscan Friary in the Basilica di Sant'Antonio, Padua.
I pray that, with Saint Anthony's assistance, you and I may find whatever it is we need as we are looking to grow in service of the Lord this coming year. Doretta Whalen [email protected] | 412-848-5124
NOVENA Our New Parish is almost here. We need your prayers. Please tear out the following page, fold it in half, and take a few moments out of your day, for the next nine days ,to make this Novena to St. Raphael the Archangel. You should begin the Novena the day after Christmas and continue to pray every day leading up to the day of the completed merger. This Novena can also be found online at CGScatholic.org. Look for the link on our homepage, or scan this QR code to upload the Novena to your smartphone or tablet.
FUNDRAISER FOR ST. MARGARET SCHOOL Coming just in time for the Superbowl, order your Zroni roll! This is a full-sized pepperoni roll that feeds three to four people. Orders must be placed by January 19. Pick up from the school cafeteria on February 4, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Contact Tasha Leslie to place your order [email protected] or 412-889-1713
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Many thanks to all who graciously donated to help provide the beautiful flowers around our altars. We will be listing your tributes in an upcoming bulletin. As always, our bulletin can be found online at CGScatholic.org.
The 2020 Christmas Light Spectacular is here! The Saints Simon and Jude church parking lot has been transformed into an amazing musical Christmas Light Display with dancing lights, music, Father Alek, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Mrs. Claus, some Elves, and even Santa! You can see the display every night at 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. from now until January 3, 2021. This VERY FAMILY FRIENDLY show is about 60 minutes in length and is looped continuously so you can drive in anytime and you will not miss anything! Stay as long as you like and come back as many times as you want – it’s FREE! The show is broadcast on FM Radio channel 96.7 so all you have to do is park your car and turn on your radio to see and hear this amazing light show! Make sure to tell all your friends, family, and every little kid you know about the fabulous Christmas Light Spectacular Show! Hope to see you there!
There are no donations asked for or accepted for this awesome event – it’s FREE and open to the public!
IMPORTANT FINANCIAL CHANGES
1. NEW PARISH ENVELOPES: Beginning in January, our new parish will have one set of envelopes for all three churches. Parishioners should be receiving these now. Inevitably, there will be a few issues with the transition, and we ask for your patience as we sort things out. If you currently use envelopes and do not receive them or if you do not use envelopes and begin receiving them, please contact Melissa in the parish office ([email protected] or 412-857-5356, choose option 1 under “Staff Directory”). See page 4 of this bulletin for information about online giving.
2. OFFERTORY REPORTS FOR THE 2020 TAX YEAR: Parishioners wishing to receive a 2020 Contribution Summary must request them by JANUARY 31, 2021. Our three church databases are being merged into one and the old databases will be archived at the end of January.

The 6th grade also made different kinds of Graphs/Plots from data. They discussed what a share of stock is and how to use a line graph to predict how it might perform. The 7th grade has been working on Ratio, Rates and Probability. They learned how to compare different things as well as find the unit rate. The students were trying to calculate the probability of winning different types of games. Our 8th graders have been working on Slopes and Polynomials. They discussed how slopes can be formed with equations and which jobs use slopes in the real world. The 8th grade will be working with polynomials with all operations and learning how to factor them. What is next??? Geometry - shapes, formulas, and Pi oh my…
TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS Each week we will spotlight one of our outstanding teachers here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.
MRS. TASHA LESLIE – CAFETERIA MANAGER AND FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR
I am a lifelong Pittsburgh area resident, growing up in Duquesne. From 2002-2006, I worked in Family Support for the military. In 2006, I also graduated from Robert Morris University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, K-12. In 2014, I became the Assistant Cafeteria Manager and in 2016, the Cafeteria Manager here at St. Margaret’s School. I served as PTG Vice-President and President, was the Co-Chair for the Chinese Auction for our Festival and was also the chairperson of our Festival for three years. For the last 4 years, I have been the chairperson of our gift card program, Sarris candy bar fundraiser, and many other fundraisers. This year, along with being the Cafeteria Manager, I am also the Fundraising Coordinator and a substitute teacher at St. Margaret’s. I am an active member of St. Margaret of Scotland Church and have volunteered for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt and many other events. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, and hiking with my family. My husband, Casey, and I live in Ingram with our two sons, Kevin (6th grade) and Jackson (4th grade). We are also foster parents to our nephew, Blaze.
