The Plasma Theory: Was This How God Did It?

Speakers: Barry & Helen Setterfield

God could have created the entire cosmos supernaturally in six days, via onemiracle after another. On the other hand, God could have used the very process-es He invented to arrange the created substances into the cosmos we see today.For the sake of argument, astronomer Barry Setterfield*, our April speake r,examined the second option to see where it would lead!

Because gravity is known to be a weak force, the presumption is then that it tookliterally billions of years for the universe to take shape. What will be questionedhere is not the initial expansion of the universe, which both the Big Bang andthe Bible agree happened, but whether it was gravity which took over after that.Setterfield will cite evidence of something much more rapid that happened andwhich we can experiment with, in our labs today.

This is plasma, and the idea of a plasma formation of the universe is somethingthat is coming more to the fore in scientific circles. Plasmas obey the laws ofelectricity and magnetism rather than gravity, which is much weaker and thusslower in the manifestation of its effects. When combined with an earlier, muchfaster speed of atomic processes, which the data also indicate, some form of aplasma model could easily demonstrate how God formed the entire universe wesee ‘out there’ in a few literal 24-hour days.

This beginning plasma model currently appears to be capable of answeringmany questions the Big Bang model cannot, and may in fact be suggested due tosome of the vocabulary in the first verses of Genesis 1.

*Born in Western Australia to Salvation Army parents, Barry Setterfield later attended Adelaide University, having a double major ingeology and physics. Due to ill health and some family problems, he was unable to finish. He later lectured for six years in astronomyfor the Astronomical Society of South Australia. When the government astronomer, George Dodwell, died, Barry was asked to preparehis papers for publication. Barry also worked professionally in geology, assisting in a complete mineralogical survey of SouthAustralia. In 1979 he was given a book on astronomical anomalies and noticed near the back that the speed of light had been measuredas slowing for about 300 years. Surprised, he figured that he would soon be able to pinpoint the errors, since he had been taught thespeed of light was a constant. It is almost 30 years later and the research started with that book has expanded into several fields, allrelated to the speed of light. The results have been often unexpected, as he has simply made it his goal to follow the data where itleads.

Barry is Director of the New Hope Observatory in Grants Pass, Oregon, where he teaches astronomy. He and wife Helen have lecturedtogether at colleges, churches and other groups for about six years, and are currently in the process of making a series of DVDs.

Book Review: The Soul of Science

Speaker: Dr. Vern Bissell

For this May meeting, Dr. Vern Bissell provides us a book review of The Soul of

Science by Nancy Pearcey and Charles Thaxton. Some “old-timers” may remem-ber Pearcey writing some great, incisive articles in the Bible-Science Newsletter ofa few decades ago.

Also, you may have read How Now Shall We Live? by Charles Colson and NancyPearcey, or the valuable work, The Mystery of Life’s Origin: Reassessing Current

Theories, by Thaxton, Bradley, and Olsen. The 1994 publication of “The Soul of

Science” combines the great world-view expertise of Pearcey with the technicalexpertise of Thaxton to produce a book which Vern believes has been heretoforeunderappreciated by proponents of the creation view of origins.

The authors, both science writers, argue that science in the West has progressedbecause of, rather that in spite of, Christian faith, since belief in an ordered uni-verse, governed by God-given laws, was essential for its advance. As they explainin the introduction, “As we proceed, it will become clear that the progress of sci-ence was a far cry from the simple ‘emancipation’ from religion. On the contrary,science has been shaped largely by debates among Christians over which philoso-phy of nature gives the best way to conceptualize the kind of world God createdand the nature of His relationship to it.”

The book has recently been published in China, and should have a great value inchanging the “God vs. Science” view of many academics there. Vern briefly sum-marizes his work in helping to distribute this and other creation-world view publications there.

October 2008 Evolution & the UFO ConnectionSpeaker: Dr. Thomas Kindell Although decades of research and investigations in many nations have con-cluded that no “extra-terrrestrial craft” are circling the earth, the “UnidentifiedFlying Objects” phenomenon continues to this day.
