A Passion for Change, Devotion to Consistency

Ian Smith was head of Oracle UK, Ireland and Israel until 2008, securing the biggest single deal in the software giant’s history at $650m. Before Oracle, he ran BT’sconsumer division and customer service operation. As President of the Institute of Customer Service, he realises that change must be built around the customerexperience, rather than the structure of the organisation.

Ian is a true "Titan of Industry"; a genuine and proven market leader, who will share invaluable insights on driving a culture of positive change. Drawing on over 40years of experience in the rapidly changing Information Technology sector, Ian has developed a passion for anticipating and preparing for the future.

He will use examples of disruptive technologies and business models to show why no organisation is guaranteed long term success without being open-minded to theopportunities to change. However, he will also argue that there are some fundamentals of leadership & management that will never change and you ignore them atyour peril.

Sustainable Sourcing: Going Green While Maintaining Margins

Keith is responsible for the coordination and implementation of McDonald’sglobal vision for sustainability in Europe. From 2006 he established thecompany’s European sustainable sourcing strategies before moving to hiscurrent role in 2014. McDonald’s ranks #2 in the Gartner Supply Chain Top 252014.

At McDonald’s we have a global commitment to source all our food andpackaging sustainably. In 2010 we asked World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to studyour supply chain and help us prioritise global sustainable sourcing initiativesbased on impacts and influence of key ingredients. This resulted in theidentification of 6 priority products: beef, chicken; palm oil; coffee; wood fibre;fish.

Our journey towards sustainable sourcing of these, (and other), raw materialscontinues to evolve and sometimes takes different paths in different areas ofthe world. What is clear however, is that if we are to achieve our vision, wehave to work collaboratively with like-minded companies and organisationsand seek a true balance across all 3 E’s.

Change Management: Savior or Disappointment

Quite simply, the Jägermeister story is one of the most remarkable brand transformations of the 21st century. As chairman of the board, Hasso Kaempfe turned theformerly outdated herbal schnapps into one of the world’s most popular drinks and recognisable brands for young people, managing not only the company'smarketing strategy, but also its supply chain operation. Hasso will provide invaluable behind-the-scenes insight on how this transformation took place, and the rolesupply chain played in the commercial success of the company.

There is hardly any company in which there is not the strong conviction on some point that changes need to be made. Most companies disappear from the marketbecause they lack internal adjustment to major external changes. Change processes need rather a commander than a bold visionary. Visionaries are subject to therisk to picture the world in a way so that it fits their vision. Change management has to be a process of small steps if you want to take your team along.

Effectively Identifying Risks and Mitigating Disruptions in the Supply Chain

David is considered one of the premier thought leaders in supply chain management in the world today. His research at MIT focuses on developing and implementingrobust and efficient techniques for logistics and manufacturing systems. David’s session will consider how he assisted Ford in minimising costly supply chaindisruptions and in doing so maximised profits.

Firms are exposed to a variety of risks which may disrupt their operations and supply chains. These risks are often difficult to predict and quantify and therefore hardto manage. Lacking sufficient tools to examine these risks rigorously, managers often deploy suboptimal mitigation strategies, leaving their firms dangerouslyexposed to some risks while squandering resources to mitigate other risks that do not pose a significant threat.

In conjunction with Ford Motor Company, David will address this practical need by developing a model which allows management to examine the impact of adisruption originating anywhere in the firm's supply chain. This impact can be quantified using a variety of operational and financial performance metrics, including lost production, lost profits, and lost sales. David will demonstrate how Ford has applied this model to identify previously unrecognised risk exposures in order to develop effective risk mitigationactions.

Enabling High Performing Supply Chains and Segmentation Strategies

Leading supply chains exhibit some common traits that result in superior performance, JDA calls these traits The Core Tenets of High Performance Supply Chains:

Customer-centricitySegmentationBusiness-agilitySynchronisationOptimisation

Today’s demanding business environment is pushing manufacturers and distributors to rethink their traditional supply chains and develop networks that cansegment and address specific customer needs, wants, and demands. Segmentation strategies impact all aspects of supply chain operations, they require carefulanalysis, planning and monitoring to balance higher service levels with associated cost to serve.

While conceptually appealing, companies have long struggled to deploy segmented supply chains because underlying decision-support technologies have not beenreadily available for end-to-end value chains. The good news is that much has changed with technology over the past few years. The technology is now ready. Areyou?

Join JDA session to share unique expertise on how to shape tomorrow’s high performance supply chain, and examine the leading practices used by the finest globalcompanies.

Achieving Supply Chain Flexibility Through New and Innovative Strategies

In this session we focus on two related questions: So how can the firm achieve flexibility? And how much flexibility is required? To answer the question, we discuss different strategies that have been applied to achieve flexibility: System Design, Process Design and Product Design.

System Design: here we refer to achieving flexibility through manufacturing or distribution strategy or through capacity redundancy.Process Design: examples include flexible work force, lean manufacturing, organisation & management structure and procurement strategies such as flexiblecontracts, dual sourcing and outsourcing.Product Design: modular product architecture, standard components and interface, postponement strategies and component substitution all allow the firm toachieve flexibility

Given these many choices, what should the firm do? Invest in all or only a subset of these categories? Even if the firm identified a specific category of interest -- saysystem design -- as appropriate for its business, how much flexibility is required? These questions are particularly important because they require an ability toquantify the various levels of flexibility and to characterise the cost and benefit associated with each one.

A billion people in the world lack access to all-season roads. Simply put, drones are integral to the future of logistics. Andreas introduces a new type of transportationsystem that uses electric autonomous flying machines (drones) to deliver medicine, food, goods and supplies wherever they are needed. This new mode oftransportation will be the most energy-efficient way for last-mile delivery of small packages in the cities of the future and in remote rural areas, especially where roadnetworks are not well-developed.

Decarbonising Logistics: The Scale of the Challenge Ahead and How to Overcome It

Professor McKinnon has been researching and teaching in freight transport and logistics for 35 years and has published extensively in journals and books. He is amember of the European Commission's High Level Group on Logistics and was Chairman of the World Economic Forum's Logistics and Supply Chain Industry Councilbetween 2010 and 2012. He’s just released the revised and updated 3rd edition of Green Logistics. Improving the Environmental Sustainability of Logistics.

The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows the deep reductions in carbon emissions that will have to be achieved to keep future globaltemperature increases within acceptable levels. As a lead author of the transport chapter of this report, Professor McKinnon will explain what this means for themanagement of logistics and supply chains. Although some companies are successfully cutting the carbon intensity of their operations, the strong underlyinggrowth in demand for logistical activities is increasing their total carbon footprint and this trend is going to be difficult to reverse. Professor McKinnon will examinethe main options for getting logistics onto a decarbonisation pathway that will meet long term carbon reduction targets.

Future-Casting: Where to From Here for Supply Chain Professionals?

As we move towards 2016, a fresh range of issues are set to appear on the horizon and challenge supply chain professionals all over again. How will oil price volatilityand environmental restrictions limit decisions on the logistics chain? Do the rise of Chinese logistics operators and the looming growth in “Mega vessels” change yoursupply chain and distribution strategies?

Having heard throughout the Summit from industry leaders on the state of the market in 2015, this informal and animated panel discussion will cast its eye to thefuture, with a forward-thinking view as to what we will be discussing at the 2016 event. Focussing equally on anticipated challenges and opportunities, the panel willpose hypotheticals and encourage thoughts from the floor, ultimately sharing what they think the role of a supply chain professional can and could look like in 2016and how we might get there.

Can the Coca-Cola Supply Chain save childrens lives?

In developing countries, 1 in 8 children die before their fifth birthday and the second biggest killer is diarrhoea. Most forms of this disease can be treated simply andcheaply in the home and most communities have a shop. The large majority do not have a well-stocked health centre.ColaLife uses the same principles and networksthat Coca-Cola and other commodity producers use, to open up private sector supply chains for ‘social products’ such as oral rehydration salts and zincsupplements.ColaLife started as an online ‘movement’ in April 2008, and became an independent UK charity in 2011.

Coke gets everywhere even in developing countries. Essential medicines do not! Why?This is the story of how lives are being saved by mimicking what Coca-Cola do to get life-saving medicine everywhere
