These Hands
These hands, what do they mean? These are the hands of a
woman that labored to provide. These are the hands of a
woman that nurtured her family and community. These are
the hands that would prepare meals out of love for anyone
that wanted to eat. You may walk in the house hungry, but
you won’t leave that way. These are the hands of a woman
who taught us that “There is no shame in any work and if
it is worth doing it is worth doing right.” These are the
hands of a woman that taught us to listen when people
speak because “You can learn something from anyone, even
a baby.” These are the hands that pulled you in for a hug
that radiated love and comfort with no words necessary.
These are the hands of a woman that taught us to pray
and trust the Lord. In these hands I see strength, honor,
wisdom, compassion… In these hands I see you.
Elizabeth Miller, thank you for all that you did
with these hands.

Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, was born to Corrine Anderson
(later known as Corrine Dempsey) and James Anderson in
Charlotte, North Carolina on May 14, 1923. Their union pro-
duced two children, Elizabeth and Margaret. The girls were
raised with their sister-in-love, Annie Carol Shivers.
As a spirited youth, Elizabeth attended St. Paul Baptist
Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina under Reverend
William M. Bowman, later to become a member in June 1945.
While residing in New York, Elizabeth was a member of
Gethsemane Baptist Church under Reverend Tony Chaneyfield.
In 1947 Elizabeth married Hampton Miller, Jr. From that
union they produced four children, Hampton, Ernest, Sandra
and Linda. Always a provider, Elizabeth moved to Brooklyn,
New York in pursuit of greater economic stability to support
her family in Orangeburg. In New York, Elizabeth worked as
a presser and did domestic work.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Linda Shuler; grandchil-
