DeafHope  mission  is  to  end  domestic  violence  and  sexual  assault    against  Deaf  women  and  children  through    empowerment,  education  and  services.

The  Starfish  Story  The  grandmother  sits  back  quietly  as  she  watches  hundred  of  starfish  wash  up  on  shore,  the  ;de  leaving  them  behind  to  die.    She

looks  across  the  beach  to  see  her  li?le  granddaughter  rushing  towards  the  hundreds  of  starfish.    As  fast  as  the  li?le  girl  can,  she  picks  up  one  starfish  at  a  ;me  and  begins  throwing  them  back  into  the  ocean.    The  grandmother  in  such  dismay  calls  out  to  the  li?le  girl,  "Hey,  can't  you  see  that's  an  endless  ba?le.    You  can't  make  a  difference.  There  are  way  too  many."    The  li?le  girl,  never  stopping  to

address  her  grandmother,  reaches  down  and  picks  up  another  starfish,  throws  it  back  into  the  ocean  and  yells  back  to  her  grandmother  ,  "Made  a  difference  for  that  one."

Dear  Patrons  &  Guests,

Thank  you  for  coming  to  DeafHope's  6th  annual  Glimmer  of  Hope  dinner  tonight.  In  the  spirit  of  new  leaderships  here  in  our  country,  we'd  like  to  carry  this  kind  of  spirit  over  to  DeafHope.  President  Obama  proclaimed  that  we  chose  hope  over  fear,  he  said  it  right.  When  the  name  for  DeafHope  was  discussed  at  the  very  beginning,  we  unanimously  agreed  that  HOPE  is  a  powerful  word.  To  hope  for  better  life,  for  better  tomorrows,  for  violence  free  lives,  for  healthier  families  and  relationships,  and  simply  to  have  hope  that  things  will  work  out  the  way  it  should.  We  chose  not  to  give  in  and  allow  age  old  society  to  dictate  how  violence  in  the  homes  and  on  the  streets  is  acceptable.  We  chose  hope  over  fear  by  saying  "Enough  is  enough"  and  to  push  for  new  changes.  If  we  can  turn  around  our  economy,  build  relationships  with  other  countries,  and  be  more  environmentally  conscious,  then  we  can  do  this.  I  am  thinking  that  when  Thomas  Edison  said,  "Success  is  10%  inspiration  and  90%  perspiration"  I  can  only  think  how  important  VISUALIZATION  is  and  the  ACT  of  doing  it.  Once  we  see  what  we  want  based  on  how  we  are  inspired,  we  must  go  out  all  the  way  to  get  it  accomplished.    We  are  inspired  by  your  presence  here  tonight.  We  are  inspired  by  our  VIP  waiters  who  take  on  the  challenge  to  raise  money  through  tips.  We  are  inspired  by  the  creativity  poured  into  this  event.    We  are  inspired  by  our  survivors  and  their  stories.  It  is  not  to  say  any  less  of  you  all  being  10%,  give  or  take,  -‐  you  all  play  an  important  role  in  igniting  the  fire  under  us  to  keep  going.  INSPIRATION  is  a  necessity.  A  flame  cannot  be  burned  without  the  act  of  ignition.  And  now,  because  of  all  the  inspiration  and  support  we  have  and  will  keep  receiving,  we  will  continue  to  roll  up  our  sleeves  and  tread  the  path  toward  our  ultimate  goal-‐  for  social  changes,  Deaf  Women  Space,  and  for  Deaf  women  and  children  to  live  violence  free  lives.

DeafHopefully  Yours,  Kate  Kovacs

Dear  Starfish  Community,

DeafHope's  Purple  Sea  of  Dreams  is  about  the  spirit  of  dreaming  big  for  a  better  world!!    Looking  around  tonight,  there  is  a  purple  sea  of  people,  including  yourself,  here  to  support  DeafHope's  dream.

Deaf  survivors  have  shared  their  difficult  situations  because  shelters  in  California  are  not  accessible  to  American  Sign  Language  and  the  system  is  not  culturally  designed  for  Deaf  people.  Deaf  survivors  find  themselves  having  to  advocate  for  their  rights  instead  of  focusing  on  healing  from  violence.

At  times  it  seems  easier  to  stay  with  the  abuser,  who  is  part  of  the  Deaf  community,  than  to  deal  with  access  issues.

My  heart  breaks  for  the  children  taken  away  from  their  Deaf  mothers  because  of  "failure  to  protect"    from  abusive  partners.    Where  can  mothers  go  to  protect  their  children?  Our  system  sets  up  Deaf  survivors  for  failure,  putting  them,  as  well  as  their  children,  at  greater  risk  for  fatality.  There  is  no  place  here  in  California  where  Deaf  survivors  can  just  "be"  and  focus  on  healing.

Deaf  survivors'  stories  inspired  the  DeafHope  Board  of  Directors  and  staff  with  a  big  dream  -‐-‐    a  residential  building  for  abused  Deaf  women  and  their  children,  where  they  can  live  without  fear,  called  A  Door  To  Hope.        Exactly  one  year  ago,  this  dream  was  just  drawings,  collages,  and  scribbles  of  what  we  would  like  to  see.    Now  it  has  materialized  into  a  3-‐D  model.    The  vision  is  passionately  clear,  shared  by  many  in  our  very  own  Deaf  community!    Many  thanks  to  Hansel  Hope  and  Hope  Mitnik,  architects  who  specialize  in  Deaf  Space.  They  heard  our  dreams  and  captured  what  we  envision  so  eloquently.

Tonight  I  am  excited  to  announce  that  our  capital  campaign's    first  phase  has  come  to  a  close.    We  are  starting  our  second  phase  -‐to  find  and  purchase  a  five  acre  property  for  our  Door  to  Hope  in  southern  Alameda  county  (Castro  Valley,  Dublin,  Pleasanton).  There  is  a  total  of  five  phases,  each  phase  is  approximately  one  year  long.    Our  goal  is  to  own  the  property  before  our  7th  Annual  Glimmer  of  Hope  in  2010!The  Starfish  Story  shared  tonight  is  a  constant  reminder  that  one  person  at  a  time  can  make  a  difference  for  one  survivor  at  a  time.  Each  one  of  you  is  a  starfish  contributing  to  DeafHope's  Purple  Sea  of  Dreams.    Thank  you  for  being  here  tonight  to  dream  big  for  a  place  of  our  own  -‐  our  "Door  To  Hope".

In  spirit  of  Starfish,    Julie  Rems-‐Smario,  Executive  Director

Tom  Wood  PrimiVve  Folk  ArVst

“Deaf  Heritage”  book,  published  in  1981,  page  153:

Tom  Wood  said  “I  love  wood,  to  assemble  it,  carve  it,  and  sometimes  to  decorate  it.    It  is  my  whole  life.”    Wood  was  born  in  England  in  1902.  He  became  deaf  at  18  months  as  a  result  of  an  attack  of  scarlet  fever  and  whooping  cough.  He  moved  to  Canada  and  attended  a  school  or  the  deaf  in  Winnipeg,  Manitoba.  He  attended  Gallaudet  College  for  one  year.  Then  he  worked  in  the  U.S.  Government  Printing  Office  for  25  years.    Tom  had  no  formal  art  training.  He  had  his  own  conceptions  of  art.  His  works  uniquely  display  the  craftsmanship  of  wood  carving,  wood  tesserae,  and  sculpture.  They  were  done  in  different  kinds  of  wood  from  all  over  the  world.  Most  of  his  works  are  in  the  forms  of  water  birds,  turtles,  llamas,  camels  and  other  animals.  He  did  art  symbols  from  his  own  imagination.    He  had  his  first  one-‐man  show  at  the  Art  Gallery,  Riverside  City  College  in  California.

Page 114: DeafHope's 6th Annual Glimmer of Hope 2009 Program Book

Robin  Mills  My  exposure  to  the  arts  began  at  birth;  I  come  from  an  artistic  family  with  a  mother  who  is  an  abstract  painter  and  a  brother  who  is  also  an  accomplished  photographer.  Since  childhood,    I’ve  spent  many  years  studying  various  art  forms  such  as  dance,  drama,  Hopi  silver  smiting  and  ceramics  at  The  Idyllwild  School  of  the  Arts.  My  interest  in  photography  began  in  high  school  when  I  participated  in  class  trips  up  and  down  the  California  coast  photographing  small  towns,  their  inhabitants  and  environs.    In  the  1980s  I  began  photographing  dancers  while  studying  and  performing  dance  in  Santa  Cruz  and  Los  Angeles.  I  have  travelled  extensively  through  Europe,  Asia,  SE  Asia,  Mexico,  Central  America,  and  British  Columbia,  which  has  provided  many  opportunities  for  photography.  Over  the  years  my  subject  matter  interests  have  shifted  between  portraiture,  urban  and  nature.    More  recently  I  have  been  drawn  to  macro  (close  up)  photography.    I  am  drawn  to  shape,  line,  color,  texture  and  movement,  and  enjoy  finding  the  design  elements  and  hidden  patterns  in  the  minutia  of  macro  photography.  My  other  artistic  endeavors  include  fused  glass  and  fiction  writing,  and  I  am  always  adding  to  the  list.    More  of  my  work  can  be  seen  at:  http://web.me.com/robinmills1/Robin_Mills/Welcome.html
