While studying construction management, you will experience practical learning in all aspects of the industry, including cost estimation, project management, construction methods, contracts and scheduling.

Our architecture students work closely with our construction management students, gaining a distinct and unique cross-disciplinary understanding. These insights into each other’s work are invaluable when our students graduate, and begin to communicate, liaise and work together in the fields of construction and architecture. Construction industry employment is projected to grow by 87,000 (or 8.3 per cent) by November 2020. Following several years of subdued growth, employment in construction has increased by 69,400 (or 7.1 per cent) over the past three years, against the backdrop of a strong rise in residential building construction and historically low interest rates, both of which are likely to continue to support growth in the industry.* Our graduates go on to find employment in a wide range of positions, including commercial, industrial, residential, project management and contract administration.

Our Bachelor of Design (Architecture) course places great emphasis on practical learning, and is designed to meet the needs of students who want to go on to complete the Master of Architecture and practice architecture. Innovative teaching and facilitiesThe Geelong Waterfront Campus offers a contemporary design studio open 24 hours, fully equipped workshop with 3D printers and laser cutters, rapid prototyping and a building performance lab. We were one of the first universities in Australia to recognise the need to build BIM (Building Information Modelling) into our undergraduate courses, which use BIM from year one to final year. Deakin understands the importance of teaching best practice in industry, ensuring its students graduate with not only a quality degree but also an industry-relevant degree.

The a+b studio and workshop provides students, academics and researchers with a place to fabricate models, encouraging experimentation with technology, materials and processes. The interdisciplinary space provides access to a variety of digital and analogue tools, with open plan studio design facilitating collaboration on projects.

The Interdisciplinary Design environments for Engineering and Architecture laboratory (IDeEA lab) is a new research resource that will foster collaboration with the School of Engineering in the fields of spatial modelling, mixed reality and responsive environments. The lab has a suite of high-performance computers, large-scale stereographic video projection, 7.1 surround sound, Oculus Rift VR and state-of-the-art 3D modelling and simulation software.

Gain industry experience

We have strong industry links within our courses, which can lead to field trips, site visits and guest lectures from built environment professionals. You will have a number of opportunities to gain work experience during your studies, forming real networks before graduation.

Recent placements undertaken by students have included Brookefield Multiplex, DesignInc Architecture, Grimshaw Architects, Kane Constructions, Peddle Thorpe Architects and Rendine Constructions.

Take an international study tour

Students have the opportunity to participate in the Built Environment Study Tour, which develops understanding and cooperation through hands-on learning and international and cultural immersion offered through schools of architecture in Australia and Asia. Participants from around the world engage to develop real-world solutions to a design problem and in the process gain a strong work ethos, new design philosophies and develop friendships.

Postgraduate articulation courses

Do you want to register as an architect?

Following successful completion of an undergraduate degree in architecture, students interested in pursuing a career as an architect must complete further study at postgraduate level and satisfy additional accreditation requirements in order to obtain professional registration.

Graduates who have completed a three-year undergraduate degree in architecture – such as Deakin’s Bachelor of Design (Architecture) – are encouraged to apply for the Master of Architecture. Those who have completed Deakin’s Bachelor of Design (Architecture)/Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours) combined course are encouraged to apply for the Master of Architecture (Design Management).

Master of ArchitectureThe Master of Architecture develops your skills and knowledge in architectural design research and resolution, urban ecologies and contexts, integrated project evaluation and performance-measured sustainable design. All of these are expected in modern professional practice.

You’ll also undertake advanced studies in cultural, technological, design, environmental and theoretical knowledge. Plus, you’ll study the ethical, evaluative and research frameworks that underpin the architecture field.

The Master of Architecture is designed to allow students with a three-year undergraduate degree in architecture to complete the final units to fulfil the academic requirements for professional accreditation and registration as an architect.
