The big picture

When we talk about a worldly education, we’re talking about the kind of person Deakin University will help you become. Someone who looks at the bigger picture, sees all sides of the story and recognises other points of view. At Deakin, we believe education is a journey, not just a piece of paper.

Arts, humanities and social sciences at DeakinGain industry experienceWork experience plays a critical role in developing your employability – students who undertake placements and internships are highly sought-after by employers. Our arts, humanities and social sciences students can access work experience and networking opportunities while they study.

Learn from expertsOur teaching staff are passionate professionals, recognised as leaders and innovators in their fields. They’re active in the media and conduct important research, making a positive impact in Australia and around the world – and helping you learn from the very best.

Career-focused coursesIndustry representatives sit on advisory boards to ensure our courses are developed and reviewed with industry and professional input, providing excellent career outcomes. Our School of Humanities and Social Sciences has strong partnerships with several high-profile organisations, such as Save the Children, and other NGOs. A recent study by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia noted that ‘within four months of completing arts/humanities and related courses, more than 75 per cent of graduates are in full-time employment and a further 20 per cent are undertaking further study’.

Study interesting and complementary areas A combined course allows you to undertake complementary studies in both degrees while exploring particular areas of interest to you. For example, combining an arts degree with a law degree enhances your understanding of the context in which the law operates. You can choose to study areas such as history, sociology, philosophy, politics or literature in addition to law studies.

Also, combined courses are designed to allow you to complete both courses in as little as four or five years, which is quicker than completing one degree followed by the other.

Find out more about combined courses in arts, humanities and social sciences on pages 22–25 or visit deakin.edu.au/courses.

‘I chose Deakin because it had a strong set of international relations and criminology subjects. There are also so many opportunities for practical experiences – internships, study

abroad programs and numerous competitions.’

AnthropologyWhat does it mean to be human? Anthropologists ask and hope to answer this question by studying humanity in the broadest sense. By studying anthropology, you’ll analyse the lives of people in a range of societies and gain insights into the science behind human existence – in essence, you’ll understand how we both create and relate to our environment. By doing so, you’ll understand how to work with people in diverse and international settings.

ArabicAustralia’s trade with the Middle East has more than doubled in the past decade, making it an increasingly important region with broad strategic, economic, religious and cultural influence. Studies in Arabic help you develop communication skills in modern standard Arabic, with language fluency further enhanced through an understanding of Middle Eastern history, culture and society. In-country language programs are available to students undertaking a major in Arabic.

See Diploma of Arabic, page 19.

Australian studiesWhat makes Australia tick? Who are Australia’s people? How can we make Australia more sustainable? Australian studies can answer these questions and more. You’ll get to do a unique cross-disciplinary examination of Australia’s contemporary issues and debates – in both historical and global contexts. This study area also helps you engage with Australia’s history and geography, along with the politics, culture and society that makes us who we are.

See ...Bachelor of Arts, page 16Bachelor of Arts (Honours), page 16.

ChineseLearn one of the world’s most important languages: Mandarin Chinese. While you develop your communication skills in Chinese, you will gain insights into Chinese culture, history and society. Not only is it an excellent opportunity to travel overseas, but you can also try out your language skills and improve your command of the language with native speakers.

See Diploma of Chinese, page 19.

CriminologyCriminology investigates how crime can be minimised or prevented by harnessing the insight of a number of disciplines, such as psychology and history. It also examines why some behaviours are defined as criminal and why certain people may become criminals. Criminologists’ studies are used to help law enforcers apprehend criminals more efficiently and help discover their motives to reduce the likelihood of similar crimes occurring.

Deakin has one of the few dedicated criminology courses in Australia, allowing specialised study for students seeking a career in the criminal justice system. Study topics that you won’t be able to elsewhere – such as security, surveillance, terrorism and policing.

Gender and sexualityOur lives are intrinsically shaped by the social forces around us, including politics, economics, culture, knowledge and power. Gender is a primary social vehicle in the shaping of the self, in tandem with sexual identity, class, status, the body, age and geographical location. Necessarily, therefore, gender needs to be considered within a multidisciplinary set of offerings.

See ...Bachelor of Arts, page 16Bachelor of Arts (Honours), page 16

HistoryStudy history at Deakin and understand the makings of the modern world and the ways historians have interpreted them. Our history units cover themes from colonialism and war to gender and social change, and deal with content from Australia and around the world. You’ll be taught by Deakin’s renowned historians, who are at the forefront of bringing history into public conversations.

Deakin historians have a strong online presence that offers opportunities for you to contribute. The Contemporary Histories Research Group and the Australian Policy and History Network host regular events and welcome your input.

IndonesianIndonesian language studies develop communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia, as well as an understanding of Indonesian culture, history and society. With more than 23 million first-language Indonesian speakers (140 million people speak Indonesian as a second language), and Indonesia being Australia’s closest Asian neighbour, the region is increasingly important to Australia economically, politically and culturally. In-country language programs are available to students undertaking a major in Indonesian, giving you the opportunity to travel overseas and try out your language skills with native speakers.

See Diploma of Indonesian, page 19.

International relationsInternational relations gives you a better understanding of conflict and cooperation, as well as war and peace in contemporary international politics. Through Deakin, you can study a range of issues in global politics including the nature of power and security, globalisation and global governance, human rights and global justice, the politics of the Asian region and Australia’s place in the world.

I undertook an international internship, gaining unparalleled practical experience while being immersed in a completely different culture. This has been so beneficial to me professionally, socially and personally.’
