Presentation Notes
Demanding Type – These folks are on the aggressive side of the curve. Describe how these types usually present themselves.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Arrogant Type – the “Mr. Know-It-All”. If you can learn how to work with them really well, then when they really do know something it can work to YOUR advantage. Learn how to harness their energy.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Whining Type – the “Ain’t it Awful?” type. This type can appear on the aggressive side of the curve but generally they are on the passive side, whining to one or two people at a time. They tend to always see the negative of anything. Recognize that you won’t every please them, but still be professional and polite.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Uncooperative Type – It’s not the person who normally gets things done but dropped a few balls in the past. This is the one who is polarizing and defiant.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Unreliable Type – On the Passive side of the curve. Say “yes” do no! Perhaps laughing at you behind your back, like the “laughing hyenas.”

Presentation Notes
Remember, a leopard can’t change its spots and you can’t change a “jerk.” they are who and what they are.

Presentation Notes
Stop where you are so you don’t enter their game. Stay out of the conversation. Keep your mind on the outcome you want and act from your principles. Stop, Pause, Flow. Take a deep breath to review your options and strategies. You are NEVER a public punching bag as a public official. If the bully persists, walk away. No one pushes our buttons, we do that ourselves so don’t allow this the cause you to push your own buttons.

Presentation Notes
Communicate – Learn how to listen more effectively. You don’t have to agree, just listen to understand. Sometimes they have relevant info. Empathy and authentic listening can work wonders to build rapport. Remember what Covey said, “Seek first to understand?” Be mindful and watch your own body language to keep from nodding. Others may interpret your nod as agreement when you don’t agree.

Presentation Notes
Curiosity – Learn to think like a scientist (logically) rather than like an artist. It helps to avoid irritating others. Be curious and think of resources and choices.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Breathe – Low and slow deep in the diaphragm, not high and fast. Watch your respiration to keep it in check and use it to help calm you down.

Presentation Notes
Principles – Know what you’re about and push the button appropriate for YOU! What grounds you? What are your personal beliefs? Do you have a personal mission statement? How about a personal vision statement? (What do you want people to say about you at your funeral?)

Attitude – Maybe it’s not quite “everything”, but it is a lot! When angry parents come to board meetings or come up to you in the store, keep your attitude in check. Are you familiar with the saying, “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it”?
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one thing we can control, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it.And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.
