GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Education at our institution began in 1990. Since its merger with the University on the 1st of
January 2000 it has been one of the faculties of the University of Pécs. In addition to its main
campus in Pécs it has three campuses in Kaposvár, Szombathely and Zalaegerszeg. Today the
faculty has approximately 2700 students studying for tertiary specialities, BSc majors
programmes, post-graduate MSc majors programmes and PhD programmes. The Faculty
enjoys nationwide reputation for offering innovative approaches in developing health care and
social training reflected in the MSc programmes (in Nursing and Public Health and Social
work int he Health Care) introduced first in Pécs. The doctoral school was established in 2005
enabling paramedical professionals to obtain a doctoral degree. The number of students,
majors, training centres and assistant personnel makes the institution the biggest faculty in the
country that offers training in the field of health sciences. Our students may obtain two of the
seven degrees (midwifery and nursing) that are automatically recognized in the European

Course title: SIMULATION BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HEALTH
SCIENCES
(PhD course, UP Faculty of Health Sciences, Doctoral School of Health Sciences/Institute of
Emergency Care and Health Pedagogy)
Language of instruction: English
Form of teaching: lecture
Form of assessment: written
Course description:
The simulation plays an essential part in the teaching and learning process of different health
care education. The majority of the health profession require a given level of skills acquired
during the health care education by the end of the education. Simulation based teaching and
learning has been recognized and validated as a powerful educational tool for many high-risk,
high-reliability professions. Beside the basic training the continuous medical and health
sciences education is not complete without the latest health simulation technology. Simulation
education is based on the philosophy that skills are better learned when afforded the
opportunity for deliberate practice in a controlled environment. The simulation based teaching
and learning can be applied for a wide range of purposes, from the development of procedural
skills through to teamwork, clinical reasoning and introducing students to the world of
professional practice.
The aim of the course to give an overview about the different steps of the development of
educational technology generally and applied to medicine and health sciences.
Learning outcomes:
- Differentiate between simulation-based learning and more traditional educational
approaches;
- Demonstrate an ability to develop effective teaching practices in relation to
simulation-based activities;
- Apply their understanding of the learning theories that underpin simulation learning
and teaching;
- Plan effective learning environments using a range of simulation resources and
communication activities;
- Demonstrate competence in using simulation-related tools and technologies;
- Design, implement and evaluate effective simulation-based educational sessions;
- Source and critically appraise the literature related to their simulation based activities;
- Plan and conduct appropriate educational research in relation to simulation teaching
and learning

Course description: Cardiovascular diseases and cancer give approximately 75% of the
death cases in developed countries. In spite of the development in this area during the last
decades, these diseases still have high incidence and mortality. The course will summarize the
