Blaga died in 1961 (aged 66), at a time when his creative power was still far from being ex-hausted. His premature death was the unavoidable denouement of the long years of perse-cution by the Communist regime, which turned Blaga into a social outcast.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences

DEANProf. Liviu Mih\escu Ph.D.

As a continuation of a long cultural and economic tradition within an ancient region in Romania, Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu had a remarkable and good balance and had chosen the setting up of an economic profile at first and afterwards for its development bothquantitatively and qualitatively.

The Faculty of Economics has appeared relatively recently within the Sibiu Academic environment as a distinctive entity and had in view an evolution characterized by novelty, dynamism, strictness and quality in complete accordance with the higher demands of the national and European academic environments.

With a generous, attractive and flexible educational offer, through the education at a highlevel, the Faculty of Economics complies with the present and future demands and exigenciesof the Romanian economy and society.

Promoting high education curricula for training up to well known national and international academic institutions, in accordance with the present high demands of Romanian integration within the famous family of the European democratic and prosperous countries, the Faculty of Economics aims towards an enlargement where the coordinatesmust be the value, the initiative, the incentive, the responsibility and competency.

Sibiu’s higher education system dates back to the early 18th century, when high level classes wereinitiated within the Theological School. The year 1786 marked the beginning of higher education inSibiu. The theological and pedagogical schools were followed in 1855 by the Law Academy, set up bythe German population. In 1887 the Academy of Sibiu was disbanded, and it continued its activity inBudapest.

Sibiu’s higher education saw a new beginning in 1940, when the University of Cluj-Napoca was forcedto seek refuge here, as a result of the Vienna dictate, through which northern Transylvania wasrelinquished to Hungary. A quarter of a century later, in 1969, the History Faculty of Sibiu wasestablished as a branch of the University of Cluj. In 1971, the Faculty turned into the Faculty of Philologyand History. In the same year the Faculty of Public Administration was set up, with a curriculum whichwas unique in the country. The next year meant the foundation of a new faculty, the Faculty of WoodProcessing, functioning as a branch of the Brasov University.

The year 1976 marked the establishment of Sibiu’s first autonomous institute of higher education, which comprised the following faculties: Philology and History, Economic and Administrative Law, andMechanical Engineering. The dictator regime of the 80’s gradually wound up the activity of the Facultyof Philology and History and that of the Faculty of Public Administration, until they disappearedcompletely. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was the only one to continue its activity as an Instituteof Sub-Engineering, a division of the Polytechnic Institute of Cluj-Napoca.

Following the revolution of December 1989, on 5 March 1990 the Ministry of National Educationdecreed the foundation of the University of Sibiu, which comprised five faculties: the Faculty of Letters,History and Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Textile and Food Technology, the Faculty ofEngineering and the Faculty of Sciences.

As regards the higher economic education, this was briefly present in Sibiu as part of the Faculty ofPublic Administration (1971-1974), which trained economists for the central and local publicadministration. This historical detail represented an incentive for the re-establishment of this field ofstudy in 1991, together with other arguments such as: the existence of a long tradition of universityeducation in Sibiu; the cultural character par excellence of the Sibiu area; the existence of a diversifiedeconomic, social and cultural activity, which could offer internship opportunities for students andencourage graduates’ integration into the labour market; Sibiu’s long tradition in tourism and itspotential for development as a result of environmental and geographical factors, of the variety andbeauty of the landscape, of its industrial and cultural development, of its ethnography, customs, historical and architectural monuments.

Starting from these premises, in 1991 the first economic module, with a specialization in Tourismand Services, was set up at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, as part of the Faculty of Sciences. Thisfirst step was the result of the determination and ambition of professors Ioan Cosmescu, Ştefan Mârza, and Dan Popescu, who fully committed themselves to this goal, dedicating their entire efforts to itsachievement. Other prestigious personalities from the academic (Dumitru Ciocoi Pop, ConstantinOprean, Ioan Vesa, Gheorghe Stoica, Rudolf Dotz, Hermina Dotz, Nicolae Todericiu, Constantin ŢăranMoroşan, Alexandru Hudiţean, Alexandru Grad, Ioan Bogdan, Iacob Catoiu, Vasile Glăvan) and business(Nicolae Dădârlat, Cornel Mitrea) environment had a special contribution towards supporting theeconomic field within the University of Sibiu.

The emergence, development and establishment of the economic field of study within Sibiu’s highereducation system is a natural consequence of an objective reality regarding both the present and thefuture development of this representative region of the country. During the 1991-2002 period, thehigher economic education of Sibiu developed in keeping with the requirements of an economy whichwas restructuring, modernizing and opening to the outside.

EDUCATIONALOFFER

The University of Sibiu has undergone a process of dynamic adaptation to new conditions, thusmeeting the challenges faced by the Romanian higher education system in the early 90s. In thiscontext, the year 1991 saw the setting up of the first economic specialization, Tourism and Services.

During its 20 years of existence, the economic field of study has experienced a continuous growth, both as regards its portfolio of specializations, and as regards its students, academic staff, organizational structures and financial, material and informational resources.

Prior to the implementation of the Bologna system, the adaptation of study programs to thedemands of the market and to the legislative changes involved alterations in the duration of studies(5 years/ 4 years) and in the name of some specializations, as well as the transformation of others. The specializations taught in our faculty in that period were: Tourism and Services; Commerce; Financeand Insurance; Finance and Banks; Economics of Trade, Tourism and Services; Accounting andManagement Informatics; Management.

The first master’s program in the economic field began in 2001, with a specialization in theInternational Integration of Tourism and Services. This program capitalized on the experience gainedfrom the first economic major, its overall objective being to offer students advanced specialist trainingin this area.

The consolidation of the economic field of study led to the foundation in 2002 of the Faculty ofEconomic Sciences. The Faculty’s strategy was mainly focused on the diversification of its postgraduateprograms, so as to provide training continuity to economic graduates, and offer specialist economictraining to non-economists.

As a confirmation of both its experience and its potential for development, our faculty obtainedthe accreditation for six new master’s programs which ran successfully until the implementation ofthe Bologna system: the Economics and Management of Multinational Companies; Management andMarketing Strategies and Policies of the Firm; Business Communication and Corporate PublicRelations; the Financial Management of the Organization; Financial and Banking Strategies andPolicies in the EU; European Economic Strategies and Policies.

Romania’s choice regarding its integration into the European Union has led to a reform processmeant to help it integrate into the European Space for Higher Education and promote the Europeaneducational system at an international level, as stated in the Bologna Declaration.

In this context, starting with 2005, the Faculty’s educational offer has included bachelor’s, master’sand doctoral programs in the following fields: Business Administration, Finance, Accounting,Management, Economics, Economics and International Business, Marketing, Cybernetics, Statisticsand Economic Informatics.

Doctoral studies in economic sciences have been integrated into the educational offer of the SibiuUniversity starting with 1996, when the right was obtained to organize such studies in the fields ofEconomics and Management, and starting with 1999 in that of Finance.

The 10 Bologna master’s programs offered at present by the Faculty of Economic Sciences in thefields of Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, and Management have resulted from thetransformation of the 3 semester programs previously offered, and the setting up of newspecializations meant as a continuation of undergraduate studies. Most of these programs aretargeted at bachelors of economic sciences, while the master’s program in Management (both inRomanian and in English) is targeted at non-economists.

UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATESTUDENTS

The Faculty of Economic Sciences aims at designing an educational and research process meant toform highly trained specialists in the economic field, specialists whose knowledge and skills arecompatible with the European and international requirements of proficiency.

Between 1991-2012, the higher economic education of Sibiu recorded an impressive developmentthrough the establishment of new specializations, the restructuring of the curricula on the principlesof the Bologna system, and last but not least, the expansion of the academic staff, recruited bothfrom the ranks of its graduates and from those of specialists outside the university. If in 1991 only 26undergraduate students of economics took part in the opening ceremony of the academic year at“Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, in the fall of 2010 the Faculty of Economic Sciences opened itsgates to over 5,000 bachelor and master students, enrolled in both full-time and distance learningprograms.

What has made such a large number of young high-school graduates choose our faculty?Undoubtedly, the answer resides in the broad perspectives offered by the economic education ingeneral and its strong interrelations to Romania’s economic realities, but also in the potential offeredby our faculty, well integrated into the local economy and committed to the economic developmentof the Sibiu area. Through its close connections to the business environment and to institutions bothfrom the Sibiu area and from the rest of the country, the Faculty of Economic Sciences provides itsstudents not only with a level of training which is well adapted to the demands of the labour market, but also with increased career opportunities. To these we can add other advantages derived from thehigh standard of its activity and from the solid recognition our faculty enjoys within Romania’seducational system: a high number of ARACIS accredited specializations, the national andinternational recognition of its programs, scholarships in European universities, merit scholarships, proficiency scholarships, support in the research activity, boarding conditions in the university’sdormitories.

GRADUATES

As a result of its spectacular development over the past two decades, the economic school of Sibiuhas managed to produce an impressive body of graduates, which is not only several times morenumerous than it was in the beginning years, but also more diversified in terms of specializationsattended. This outstanding achievement is a result of the continuous improvement in the selectionof candidates, but also of the efforts made by the university management to increase the quality ofits educational process.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences prides itself in its graduates. They are part of the thousands ofspecialists formed in Romanian and foreign universities, who work in Romania and contributesignificantly towards the economic development of the country, especially that of the central regionand of the Sibiu county. The growth in the number of economic graduates reflects, on the one hand, our faculty’s substantial academic resources, and on the other hand, the strong development of theSibiu county, mainly over the past ten years, a situation which makes the economist’s job one of themost demanded professional categories. This situation is confirmed by the relatively large numberof graduates (over 65%) from our faculty who have found a job in their main field of study.

Graduates from the Faculty of Economic Sciences have always enjoyed the support and confidenceof employers in the Sibiu county, who have warmly welcomed them since the very first graduationclasses. We are confident that their expectations have not been betrayed, and that the results thesecompanies have achieved over the years are partly due to the contribution of employees coming fromthe ranks of our graduates, regardless of the position they have held or are holding.

ALUMNI

Not only does the Faculty of Economic Sciences appreciate its graduates, but it also tries to keepthem close through a system of permanent communication. An important role in reaching this goalis played by the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, with a website at(http://economice.ulbsibiu.ro/alumni) since 2010. The association is open to the participation of allour faculty graduates. Its purpose is to develop an active partnership between all graduates, regardless of their year of graduation, form of education, specialization, etc. as well as between theseon the one hand and students, teachers and former teachers on the other. This partnership contributestowards maintaining a permanent and fruitful relation between professionals and the academicenvironment, and implicitly towards institutional progress and a higher prestige of the Sibiu Facultyof Economic Sciences.

On the 20th anniversary of the Sibiu economic school, nothing could better render its place in thehearts of its graduates than the very thoughts of some of them, marked not only by the emotion ofmemories from student years, but more than anything else by feelings of gratitude.

Here are some of these thoughts, as they were expressed on different occasions:

“It is here that I felt, most powerfully, the beginning of ever more complex responsibilities doubledby the need for personal development...” (Iulian Gheorghe, manager at Citibank, Romania- Sibiusubsidiary)

“... why has the Faculty of Economic Sciences formed and helped me? Because during college yearsI started to understand the mystery of entrepreneurship, of finance and banks, of organizationalcompetencies, but I also had the privilege to write and publish articles in journals and magazines...”(Ilie Banu, marketing specialist at Carpatica Bank)

SCIENTIFICRESEARCH

Scientific research represents a fundamental component in the mission of the Faculty of EconomicSciences. As such, it is stipulated in the strategic plan, its main objective being to valorise the potentialof the faculty’s teaching staff in developing empirical knowledge and scientific truth, and in cultivatingan innovative spirit. Through its results, scientific research is also meant to contribute to themodernization of the teaching process, to strengthen the faculty’s creativity and to increase its prestigein the academic world.

Research is funded from sources internal to the faculty, from grants won in national andinternational competitions (CNCSIS projects, CEEX projects, PNCDI II programmes, EU-fundedinternational research contracts) as well as from other sources (research contracts with firms, withother institutions and organizations), its aim being to achieve high standards of quality and excellencein scientific research. The research activity manages to connect the faculty’s research groups to themain national and international research programs.

Scientific research is, by its nature, a realm of communication and interconnections, of joint effortsmeant to help people acquire knowledge, share experiences, disseminate information, etc. A veryimportant element in reaching these objectives is, therefore, the collaboration with other universities, research institutes, public institutions, companies, etc. The Faculty of Economic Sciences has alwaystaken this aspect into account, developing close relations with established institutes such as theNational Institute for Economic Research, the “Victor Slavescu” Centre for Financial and MonetaryResearch, the Institute for Economic Forecasting, etc. Cooperation protocols for research in theeconomic field have also been drawn with different universities in the country and abroad.

Research is carried out both individually and in teams and/or departments, under the coordinationof the Centre for Economic Research, a CNCSIS recognized body since 2003. The research activityinvolves the integration of teachers and students at all levels (bachelor, master and doctoral), intonational and European research structures, through their participation into research projects, grantsand contracts. This activity also involves the initiation and study of fundamental, applied andinterdisciplinary research topics meant to lead, through their results, to an increased national andinternational visibility of our faculty and of its members.

The research results are published in national and international journals, presented at prestigiousscientific conferences organized in the country and abroad, or at workshops with Romanian andforeign specialists.

The research results are disseminated through books, articles and studies published in nationally

32

and internationally recognized publishing houses and prestigious journals, as well as throughmonographs and textbooks published in Romanian publishing houses recognized by CNCSIS, or inforeign publishing houses. They also involve the publication of scientific articles of major importanceto the Romanian economy in international journals (ISI or indexed in international data bases) andin Romanian specialized journals recognized by CNCSIS, as well as the participation in national andinternational economic congresses, conferences and symposia.

INTERNAL AND INTERNATIONALRELATIONS

The Faculty’s system of relations with other universities and organizations in the country is meantto help it establish itself in the national and European academic area, i.e. define its institutionalidentity, improve management at all levels, increase the quality of its programs, consolidate thecompetence and renown of its teaching staff. At the same time, the faculty’s relation system mustsatisfy the students’ needs and the demands of the labour market. Last but not least, it must answerboth the requirements imposed by the educational reform in Romania and the exigencies derivingfrom its integration into the European educational system.

Starting from the principles enumerated above, the Faculty’s relations have contributed in time tothe definition of its “brand image” and increased prestige in the Romanian academic landscape.Besides the feeling of achievement this situation generates, it also entails a high level of self-exigencyas regards the quality of services offered, which should ultimately reflect favourably on possiblecandidates, too.

In order to fulfil its mission and reach its objectives, the Faculty of Economic Sciences has constantlytried to consolidate its national collaborations in several directions: with institutions of highereducation in the economic field, with professional organizations and associations, with researchinstitutes, public institutions, student associations, etc. Since the beginning of the economic field ofstudy and then of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, the academic staff has tried to create and developrelations with other economic faculties in the country. In the past years, these relations haveintensified, being materialized into active professional and scientific partnerships with prestigiousuniversities. Notable in this respect are the mutual participations in doctoral commissions (with ASEBucharest, “Babes Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, the University of Bucharest, “A.I.Cuza” Universityof Iasi, etc). In the same context, we should outline our faculty’s active participation in meetingsorganized by important universities on topics such as the structure and correlation of curricula, syllabuses and specialty nomenclature, so as to integrate these elements into the national andEuropean economic education system. Our faculty’s national relations are maintained andstrengthened through its teachers’ constant participation in scientific events such as symposia, conferences and congresses organized periodically or on anniversaries by other universities in thecountry.

In order to improve the teaching process and bring its programs at all levels (bachelor, master, doctoral) to European standards, the faculty has also involved itself into the activity of various nationaleconomic associations whose member it is, such as the Association of Economic Faculties fromRomania (AEFR). This involvement has materialized, among others, in the initiation of collectivedebates and round tables on current economic topics, resulting in the identification of some generalguidelines for action, crucial for the future of the Romanian higher economic education.

The Faculty’s relations with other important national entities are also maintained through itsteachers’ membership in national professional bodies such as: the Romanian Academy through theInstitute for Economic Research, the General Association of Economists from Romania (GAER), theAssociation of Chartered and Certified Accountants from Romania (ACCAR), the Association for theDevelopment and Promotion of Tourism, the Romanian Marketing Association (ROMARA), theNational Association of Rural, Ecological and Cultural Tourism (NARECT), etc. The relations with someof the above mentioned professional bodies are mutual: some of the faculty’s teachers belong tothese bodies, while some of these organizations’ employees teach in our faculty. The partnershipsbetween the Faculty of Economic Sciences and some of the professional associations mentioned abovealso involve the management of study programs. An example in this respect is the partnership withACCAR, which allows graduates from the master’s program “Accounting Expertise and Audit” tobecome intern chartered accountants from the moment of graduation, without any other additionalexams. The inclusion of some of our faculty’s teachers into prestigious bodies which regulateuniversity activities, such as the National Council for the Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas andCertificates (NCAUTDC), the Romanian Agency of Quality Assurance in Higher Education (RAQAHE),etc, reflects the confidence our faculty enjoys at a national level.

The system of relations established by the Faculty of Economic Sciences has generated outstanding

The Faculty of Economic Sciences

results. For example, the National Institute for Economic Development (NIED) operates on the basisof a network of regional training centres, which are the result of a partnership with the Faculty ofEconomic Sciences from Sibiu. The “Executive MBA” program developed by NIED is primarily aimedat the development of a high level of competences necessary in the management of economic entities.

From the very beginning of its existence, the Faculty of Economic Sciences was included into animportant number of cooperation programs with foreign universities and academic institutions. Thesehave helped it go faster, and sometimes with spectacular results, through all the stages of the highereducation reform in transitional Romania, so as to become what it is today: an important player inRomania’s higher education system. Members of the academic staff who participated in variouscooperation activities with the outside, had the opportunity not only to acquire the methods andtechniques of a modern economic school, but also to get directly acquainted with teachers andresearchers from prestigious Western universities.

These cooperation programs, mostly financed from public sources, were aimed at reforming theRomanian economic school both from a methodological and epistemological perspective, and froman organizational one, thus preparing the way towards Romanian’s adherence to the BolognaDeclaration. A first important program, Temper-JEP 9228, run between 1995 and 1998 under thecoordination of AES Bucharest (IER Faculty), was meant to align Romanian universities to thestandards of Western economic education, and lay the foundation for the integration of the Romanianeconomic school into the European one. Another important program, Tempus IB JEP 13478/98 CREAP,run between 1998 and 2000 together with the Law Faculty of the LBUS, the “Transilvania” Universityof Brasov and the University of Trier, had as a main goal the creation of a training centre for publicadministration workers. In the same spirit, between 1994 and 1999, the “Lucian Blaga” Universityof Sibiu took part in an extensive collaboration program with the University of Missouri, Columbia. The purpose of this program was to introduce the university’s teachers and managers to the spiritand principles of American higher education, to the American practice of teaching, assessment, scientific research, funding, student activities, etc. The program allowed an important number ofteachers from the Faculty of Economic Sciences to visit the University of Missouri for two or severalmonths, and engage in a large array of activities (course and laboratory participation, exam taking, library self-study, visits at various economic sites, conference, seminar and symposia participation, etc). The teachers involved in this program were also able to attend courses (mainly in Managementand Economics) taught in Sibiu by professors from the Missouri University, and concluded with finalexams and assessments.

Among the activities of inter-university cooperation undertaken by the Faculty of Economic Sciencesan important part has been played by programs in specific fields, funded from private sources andrun together with Western universities and institutions. The aim of these programs was to facilitatethe faculty’s access to entrepreneurial techniques, management systems and communication methodsused in the practice of Western universities. These programs also allowed Western teachers andstudents to get acquainted with the problems of the Romanian economy, especially with those of theSibiu area, and offer solutions to these problems. Some of these solutions were later used in thearea’s development strategies, such as the planning and management of the exceptional event “Sibiu-European Capital of Culture 2007”. From the programs which implicated our faculty, the mostimportant ones were in the field of tourism, although other fields were represented as well (industry, agriculture, retailing, etc).

An important role in building the faculty’s network of international relations was played by teacherexchanges with foreign universities. Several of our faculty’s members have been invited to teacheconomic subjects at prestigious European universities (IUT de Rennes, Gabrielle D AnnunzioUniversity of Pescara, Italy, Harstadt University College, Norway, J.W.Goethe-Universitat Frankfurtam Main) under Erasmus programs or other bilateral agreements, and a number of teachers fromforeign universities (the University of Tubingen, the University of Oldenburg, the University of Trier,AES Chisinau) have come to Sibiu to teach or act as doctoral advisors.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences is integrated into the European system of transferrable credits.

37

Bilateral agreements facilitate the exchange of teachers and students, the participation ininternational scientific events, the development of joint study programs, thus offering the backdropfor common education and research projects. Student exchanges with other universities signatory ofthe Bologna Declaration are conducted under the Erasmus European program, and have existed forapproximately ten years. Student and teacher mobilities contribute towards a better evaluation ofthe teaching process, offering our faculty a real chance to align itself to the standards set by theEuropean higher education.

Our first partners in such exchanges were the Universities of Rennes and Pescara. Then, relationswere developed with Fachhochschule Munich, the University of Trier and the University of Harstadt.Next were Instituto Politecnico de Lisboa, Varna University of Economics, Haute Ecole Namuroisecatholique (Belgium), Hogeschool Gent (Belgium), Munich University of Applied Sciences, PolitechnikaCzestochowska, Universite de Bourgogne, University of Miskolc, Universita degli Studi “G.D’Annunzio”, Chieti (Italy), Saxion Hogescholen (Holland) and many others.

Under such inter-university cooperation agreements a significant number of the Faculty’s students(over fifty) have benefited in the past five years from scholarships and internships in differentEuropean universities. At the same time, approximately twenty foreign students have receivedscholarships and internships in our faculty.

The overall objective of the Faculty of Economic Sciences is to train students, and help them becomenecessary and useful to the economic, social and business environment. However, student training isnot confined to the passing on of knowledge, but involves a complex formation process in which thefaculty’s relations with businesses, state institutions, non-governmental institutions, etc play a centralrole. The faculty’s integration into the local economy, and the consolidation of its relations with localorganizations ensure increased opportunities for the professional orientation of its graduates.

In order to achieve the above-mentioned objective, the Faculty of Economic Sciences has chosenseveral lines of action. A first line involves adapting student training to the requirements of the labourmarket, by increasing the number of specializations in line with the demands of Romania’s economicdevelopment in general, and those of Sibiu’s economy in particular. At the same time, qualitativeaspects have always constituted a priority for the faculty’s management and academic staff, theirmain goal being to adapt students’ education to the occupational standards set by employers and bythe labour market. To this end, syllabuses are periodically revised based on analyses carried out

together with students, graduates and employers. The knowledge, competencies and skills acquiredby our students must allow them to enter the labour market, to set up their own businesses, and atthe same time to continue to learn. The number of our faculty’s students has increased constantly, and more than 60% of our graduates have found a university qualified job within two years fromgraduation.

Another major direction is the increased importance granted to applied training, seen ascomplementary to theoretical training. This objective has been achieved through the organization ofstudent internships in economic and social organizations in the Sibiu county, south Transylvania, northOltenia and Muntenia, these being the main areas covered by the economic school of Sibiu. Sibiu hasan important economic and cultural potential, with real perspectives of future development. Beingsituated in the middle of the country, at the junction of the main commercial and tourism routes, ithas always constituted a centre of attraction for many economic, cultural and social projects.

As a result of efforts made by the Faculty’s management, the past years have seen a constantincrease in the number of internship positions and contracts, as well as in the number of partnercompanies and institutions which have expressed their willingness to host internships. These externalcollaborations have supported the documentation of students’ degree and dissertation papers, ofproject work submitted during the academic year, as well as of teachers’ research papers presentedwithin the Faculty’s scientific events. Upon the completion of their internships, and even duringstudent years, many students have been recruited and hired in various fields of activity: accountingand management informatics, marketing, services, management, insurance, brokerage, transport, trade and tourism.

The students from the Faculty of Economic Sciences can use the assistance provided by theuniversity’s Career Advisory Service (C.A.S.), founded in 1996 in collaboration with the British Council, and with the support of the “Know How” Fund. The department’s main purpose is to establishconnections between students, graduates and the job market. It offers students constant advice, including the facilitation of interview participation, and assists them in defining their career-relatedneeds. The Summer Job Fair organized by C.A.S. every year, offers students the opportunity to get intouch with employers and obtain either internships or full-time contracts. Similarly, the UniversityBusiness Association (UBA) is an organization which facilitates constant exchanges between faculties, business people and students so as to help the latter acquire business skills and contacts, developtheir English language skills and gain support in finding permanent or summer jobs. Finally, theUniversity of Missouri, Columbia has supported our university in setting up a nationally recognizedBusiness School as a centre of academic and research excellence in business management and appliedresearch.

The fast-paced development of the global economy makes current careers less clearly defined andchanges less predictable than they were in the past. Organizations are faced with mountingcompetitive pressures to reduce both their internal hierarchy and their workforce. The “fight” withchange has become synonymous with acquiring increasingly complex professional competencies andmanagerial skills, with understanding and realistically evaluating one’s own values, abilities andinterests. In this carrousel of change, the Faculty of Economic Sciences plays a key role.

DISTANCE LEARNING AND LOW ATTENDANCEEDUCATION

In the context of the Romanian higher education reform, and as an answer to the needs of thosewishing to attend university programs without interrupting their social and professional activity, starting with the academic year 1998/1999 “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu has developed distanceand low attendance education programs. The university offers students enrolled in DL/ LAE programsan operating structure for all the activities necessary to the learning process.

The initiation, development and management of DL/LAE study programs are conducted within aspecialized institutional structure designed for this purpose, the Department for Distance and LowAttendance Education (DDLAE), which operates under the Education Law and under its own rules andregulations. The structure of the department has been adapted in keeping with the new qualitystandards imposed by the education reform in Romania, on the one hand, and with the exigenciesof the labour market, on the other. Starting from the premise that graduates from these programsmust enjoy equal chances with those enrolled in full-time programs, the department’s main goal isto offer DL/LA students a quality of training which is on a par with that offered to full-time students.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences and DDLAE are currently coordinating the training of over threethousand students, enrolled in four specializations at bachelor’s level and eight specializations atmaster’s level, authorized and/ or accredited.
