Dear Brother Knights, What was it that PSD Bob Hatler always said? Oh yeah, “Don’t blink”! Well, did you blink? Because, as you read this, we have already completed one quarter of the Fraternal Year! If you didn’t believe that adage before, I sincerely hope you do now. The last 3 months were predictably slow, but now’s the time to kick it into high gear and do what you can to grow the Order. And, not just membership, but conducting successful programs as well. Like I said, we started the year slow, but there was a noticeable increase in activity and new members in the last few weeks of September. Thank you for your efforts. Also, Online Membership continues to be a great source of new members, especially in New Jersey. Every day I’m getting emails that show two, three or four members have joined Online. Not only are they joining, but they’re indicating that they want to join a specific local Council! That’s members for you that you did not have to put out any effort to get. But, please don’t fall into the trap of thinking you don’t have to do anything, that the Online Program will do it for you. You still need to recruit. In the last month, all 5 Diocese held Membership Training. I haven’t seen the sign-in sheets yet, but from what I’ve seen and heard, attendance was up from last year, and that’s encouraging. What’s not encouraging is the attitude of those Councils that didn’t attend, that they’ve “seen it all before.” No, you haven’t. There were some new wrinkles added, like the Delta Church Drive that is guaranteed to succeed if done right. But, you need to see the presentation so you know how to work it. The presenters were also instructed to make the meetings more interactive so that we know what YOU need to be successful. The month of October seems to be “ramp-up” time. We get awfully busy awfully quick! Most Councils will, or should, be having Membership Drives in conjunction with our namesake, Christopher Columbus’, birthday. We also have the Soccer Challenge, Financial Secretary training, Rosary Rally (North & South), and the State Retreat. Check the calendar of events in this issue for dates, and for other events. If you are planning on going to the State Retreat in Long Branch at San Alfonso’s, make sure you contact the Chairman, John LeClercq as soon as possible so you’ll be guaranteed a spot. There is also, this year, a one day Retreat if you cannot get away for the whole weekend. If you’ve never been there, you’re missing out. Brothers, October is Respect Life Month. Think about things your Council can do. Maybe take part in saying a rosary at an abortion clinic, coordinating with your Pastor to show “Unplanned”, the film that is changing people’s hearts and minds (contact DD 23, Colin Casey for info on how to rent the film), conduct a Baby Bottle Boomerang, etc. At the very least, say the rosary every day this month for the preservation and sanctity of life, from conception to natural death. Remember, we are “Patriots Protecting ALL God’s Children”. May God continue to bless you and your families, and the Knights of Columbus! . • Dear Brother Knights,

What was it that PSD Bob Hatler always said? Oh yeah, “Don’t blink”! Well, did

you blink? Because, as you read this, we have already completed one quarter of the

Fraternal Year! If you didn’t believe that adage before, I sincerely hope you do now. The

last 3 months were predictably slow, but now’s the time to kick it into high gear and do

what you can to grow the Order. And, not just membership, but conducting successful

    programs as well.

Like I said, we started the year slow, but there was a noticeable increase in

activity and new members in the last few weeks of September. Thank you for your

efforts. Also, Online Membership continues to be a great source of new members,

especially in New Jersey. Every day I’m getting emails that show two, three or four

members have joined Online. Not only are they joining, but they’re indicating that they

want to join a specific local Council! That’s members for you that you did not have to put

out any effort to get. But, please don’t fall into the trap of thinking you don’t have to do

anything, that the Online Program will do it for you. You still need to recruit.

In the last month, all 5 Diocese held Membership Training. I haven’t seen the

sign-in sheets yet, but from what I’ve seen and heard, attendance was up from last

year, and that’s encouraging. What’s not encouraging is the attitude of those Councils

that didn’t attend, that they’ve “seen it all before.” No, you haven’t. There were some

new wrinkles added, like the Delta Church Drive that is guaranteed to succeed if done

right. But, you need to see the presentation so you know how to work it. The presenters

were also instructed to make the meetings more interactive so that we know what YOU

    need to be successful.

The month of October seems to be “ramp-up” time. We get awfully busy awfully

quick! Most Councils will, or should, be having Membership Drives in conjunction with

our namesake, Christopher Columbus’, birthday. We also have the Soccer Challenge,

Financial Secretary training, Rosary Rally (North & South), and the State Retreat.

Check the calendar of events in this issue for dates, and for other events.

If you are planning on going to the State Retreat in Long Branch at San Alfonso’s,

make sure you contact the Chairman, John LeClercq as soon as possible so you’ll be

guaranteed a spot. There is also, this year, a one day Retreat if you cannot get away for

the whole weekend. If you’ve never been there, you’re missing out.

Brothers, October is Respect Life Month. Think about things your Council can do.

Maybe take part in saying a rosary at an abortion clinic, coordinating with your Pastor to

show “Unplanned”, the film that is changing people’s hearts and minds (contact DD 23,

Colin Casey for info on how to rent the film), conduct a Baby Bottle Boomerang, etc. At

the very least, say the rosary every day this month for the preservation and sanctity of

life, from conception to natural death. Remember, we are “Patriots Protecting ALL

    God’s Children”.

May God continue to bless you and your families, and the Knights of Columbus! .

  • Dear Brother Knights: As we finish the first quarter of the fraternal year, we stand at 245 new members of the 2140-member quota set by Supreme. This is a little over 11 percent. As of this printing each Diocese has held a membership training session. Hopefully you were able to attend and learn new ways to attract new members. Also, attendees learned of Supremes “Delta Church Drive” which is a new and exciting way to hold a church drive. With this new church drive we hope your council has set up their Online Prospect Landing Page. This will give the parishioners an email with general information of our order. With this Landing Page you will only need their name and email address. All this information regarding this new technique will be available on the state website. We also discussed our growing Online membership, retention, ethnic development and round tables. We are in full swing with our incentive program which has been sent to each Grand Knight and District Deputy. The incentive program will reward the top council for recruitment in each Diocese twice in the fraternal year. Also, an opportunity for a member to receive a financial reward for recruiting the most members. As I have mentioned before we have over 60,000 members in the state. We spoke of the “Power of One”. I ask each of you to recruit one new member. Imagine what our order could do if we doubled the number of members we had. How much charitable work our order could do? How our programs would flourish. One thing we hear quite often when we do recruit is NO ONE EVER ASKED ME. So why not ask someone, all they can say is no. As always, the membership team is here for you. If you have a question, you can reach out to your Diocese Membership Chairman or myself.

  • We conduct Family Rosary Rallies in the Southern & the Northern parts of New Jersey. Refer to 5.10 & note the two different dates for north and south. As Knights of Columbus we honor our Blessed Virgin Mary, our dear Mother of God by praying the Rosary for the intentions of making reparation for the blasphemy The Rosary is an old prayer that is always new, leading us to Jesus through Mary. The Blessed Mother urged everyone to pray the Rosary during her apparitions at Fatima, Portugal. She called herself the “Lady of the Rosary,” and promised that the Rosary would help people grow in their faith, convert sinners, and bring about world peace. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7th when all are invited to meditate upon the mysteries of Christ by following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary in recalling the incarnation, passion, and glorious resurrection of the Son of God. The Rosary is a prayer with a long tradition, yet it is still a prayer for us today. It is simple and powerful, and is credited with granting tremendous favors and blessings.

The Joyful Mysteries The Luminous Mysteries The Sorrowful Mysteries The Glorious Mysteries

Are your Council Members routinely saying the Rosary at your meetings? Are you routinely saying the Rosary with your family?

For those attending from afar, consider the following: Pack a lunch; Car or Van Pool, Council Cluster and Rent a Bus; bring your Council’s Banner and Flag. Our strength is in our Unity. The Rosary will nourish family life. “Help Keep a Promise to Say the Rosary.” ROSARY RALLY NORTH – OCTOBER 13 – 2:30 pm

Brothers, let’s talk about the Round Table! Please pull up a

chair and join us. I am about to ask for your help and if you

can and will help me, you will help your Council, Parish and

ultimately your Pastors. I am offering you one of the easiest

and very beneficial programs to aid you and your council. It

has minimum work from the Grand Knight and possibly

great rewards. The Parish Round Table is so simple that it

literally has (2) forms! One at the beginning of the year

when you appoint your coordinator (Form # 2629) and one

at the end of the year (Form # 2630) filled out by the

coordinator and turned over to the Grand Knight to show the

progress of the Round Table. One of many purposes in

forming a Round Table is to “to establish a Knights of

Columbus presence in every Parish”. There are many

benefits in establishing a Parish Round Table for the

Parish, Knights and Priests and creates a unique support

structure within a Parish, to help and support. As always

you should meet with your Pastor and get his blessing and

support and let him know that the Knights are there to

support them. Starting a Round Table, there are NO

elections, coordinator is appointed by GK and Pastor and

serves at their will. No extra meetings to be away from

your families, NO DUES, you still pay your dues to your

council, any moneys raised by the RoundTable will be held

and disbursed by the Council. And of course, fill out Form

2629! There is only one coordinator and he is to meet with

the Pastor when necessary or at least monthly to find out

how the Knights can be of assistance!

A Council that serves only one Parish cannot have a

Round Table, unless it is ethnic Round Table. If you have

a group of men in your council that are Spanish, Polish,

Vietnamese etc. We have found a Round Table very

beneficial as a recruiting tool. Many of these brothers feel

more secure and able to express ideas when they meet

among brothers who speak their language. You can tap into

all kinds of new ideas and recruit new members from these

    Round Tables.

If your council encompasses two or more Parishes, you

should have a Round Table in each and I ask that you form

one now. Each Round Table need one coordinator, you

cannot use the same person twice, a different brother from

that Parish should be the contact person. As you can see

this very easy yet very fulfilling project should be your next

project, let’s do it today, fill out that form and let’s get

started. As my space is limited, please brothers if you have

any questions or I can help in anyway please don’t hesitate

to contact me! Thank you brothers for your time!

    Christopher Tomasello, MFD, FDD

  • My Fellow Knights, Remember the clock will “fall back” soon; but I hope all Councils have moved forward with our Knights of Columbus Service Programs. I hope that all of you have been doing your programs all summer long and have begun to fill out your Columbian Award forms. REMEMBER to use your Grand Knights Handbook to assist you with planning and performing the Knights of Columbus programs. Not only is the Handbook on the thumb drive you were given back in June there is always an up to date Handbook on the State Website. Please be involved in the programs available to each of your Councils. We all know that Programs Drives Membership and Membership Drives Programs. Under the Family Programs keep in mind that there is the Family of the Month and Knight of the Month programs. Keep your membership engaged and reward them for all their hard work. Send your forms to the new chairman Chris Ege. As well as, the Food for Families/Food for the Hungry. Contact Ed Visinski if you have any questions. Remember to provide the McGivney Guild forms to all new Knights at the Admission Degree. In the Faith Programs for October consider joining our State Officers at the NJ State Retreat on October 18-20 at the St. Alonso Retreat House. This is a good way to attain your Spiritual Reflection Mandatory Program requirement. Since it is the beginning of the school year, consider doing Child ID Kits in the Community Program area. This is information is necessary for our local Law Enforcement partners in an emergency. Remember that the Safe Environment Program (under the Life Program Category) MUST be completed within 30 days of receiving your e-mail. Get this done as it helps to protect your Council and membership. Please contact Jim Sweeney, our State Advocate, for any needed information. The Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest has begun “Discuss the meaning of Virtue and how you live and embody the virtue of Charity.” In an essay of 500-750 words, consider the meaning of virtue and think about ways in which you exemplify the virtue of Charity to glorify and reflect the nature of God. If you have any additional questions contact Steve Agnone. The SOCCER challenge is in full swing. Vito Pulito is the chairman and is always looking for Brothers willing to assist, contact him if you are interested. Brother Vito is also looking for your participation notification. If your Council is involved in the Soccer Challenge please make sure they let Brother Vito know. Additionally under the Life Program, area is the Novena for Life Program. Contact chairman Peter Kueken for information. This is also a required program so do not wait for the last minute. Get your required Programs done NOW. Doing your programs will teach those Knights ready for advancement and make sure your Councils are “PATRIOTS PROTECTING ALL GOD’S CHILDREN!!”

Scott Williams, FDD, General Program Director

Dear Brother Sir Knights, welcome to fall! We are

supposed to cooler temperatures and start to return to our

“normal lives and jobs”. Kids are back to school and most

of us are getting back to the grind and having meetings

again! Well it is quickly becoming that time again for the

entire State to prepare for the Patriotic Exemplification.

Knighthood degrees are in full swing and it is time to

recruit and ask someone to consider being a patriot and

receive the honor of becoming a Sir Knight! The Second

NJ Districts will be hosting the exemplification in the honor

of State Deputy Vincent (Vinnie) Tavormina on

Novemeber10th at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City

and the First District will host their exemplification on

November 17th and Honor Rev. Msgr. Eugene (Gino)

Sylva, S.T.D at Le Neve’s in Haledon. It’s time to reach out

and contact 3rd Degree or even contact the 1st and 2

    nd’

degree members in your council and offer them the

opportunity to advance through the degrees to the Patriotic

Degree of our Order. There is still time to get that

accomplished if you try! If there was ever a time when our

country and church needed the Knights of Columbus…this

is that time! Take the opportunity to explain the differences

and why it is important to achieve Sir Knighthood. This

country needs Sir Knights that will defend and proudly

represent our flag! Honor our veterans and active duty

members that protect us and defend our freedoms. There

are many programs that we can do all we need is help, the

more members we have the more we can achieve to help

others with the greater good! Celebrate and defend

Columbus Day, take part in some celebration or may be

start one next year! Keep in mind now is the time to set up

your Mass for deceased brothers coming up in November,

Honor the ones who have gone before us!

Now is the time for your assembly to consider how they

can help our Vets and servicemen and women as we head

to the Christmas Season. I am aware it’s early but we

need to plan ahead. Consider helping out at the veteran

homes, making a donation to “Send a Hero Home for the

Holidays”. Any worthwhile cause to let these men and

women know they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Consider starting a Christmas card writing program to

pledge our support for them. It is easy and cheap. Go to a

dollar store and buy 20 cards for less than $5.00, shop all

the stores and they are always discounting the box sets

(try to make sure you get a card set that says Merry

Christmas, not season greetings). At an Assembly meeting

have everyone fill out two cards one to a servicemen and

one to vet living in a veteran home, I promise it will make

    their day!

On behalf of Paul Pinkman Master of 1st District,

Andrew Lipenta, Vice Supreme Master and I, we wish all a

very safe fall season. Christopher Tomasello, Master

  • TEMPUS FUGIT!!! Change is the only constant: Time flies…It’s not even Halloween and some stores are already putting out Christmas merchandise. Where did the summer go? Where did 2019 go? Where did the last 10 years go? These are all questions I am asking myself today. My kids are both out of college and self-sufficient, but I remember holding them the day they were born. Where did those 25 years go? When I combed what little hair, I have left on my head today, I asked again, where did the last 40 years go? My mother recently turned 91, where have the last 60 years gone? Time flies…so it’s better to do something today, than to put it off, until it is too late to do anything about it, (like my hair). Forty-one % of Americans have no life insurance at all. Of the 59% who do have life insurance 50% of them, know that they need more. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? If you need an invitation to meet with your agent, the Supreme Knight just mailed out 1 million of them. The fraternal surveys that started going out in September are an invitation from our Supreme Knight to every member to get in touch with his agent and take advantage of our insurance program. If you have sent in your survey, thank you, even if you don’t need to speak to an agent now, we will contact you to say thanks and see if there is an issue you want to discuss. (The Supreme Knight tasked us with talking to everyone who returns a survey.) If you checked off a box or two or want to talk about something in your life, we will come and answer all your questions, until you are satisfied, so that you can make an informed decision about contracting for protection or not. Either way you will know where you stand. Insurance with the Order is voluntary, but Death, Disability, Illness and Old Age are not voluntary. Over the last 25 years I have slept well knowing that if anything happened to me, my wife and kids would be okay because I met with my Field Agent. 19 years ago, I became an agent and in 2011 I became a General Agent. Those 19 years have been the most rewarding of my working career, because every day I make sure families are taken care of. If you want to meet to learn about social security issues, securing your nest egg, creating an income you can’t outlive, or talk about legacy or tax advantaged passing of assets, then call your General Agent. We extend that invitation to you…It’s who we are and what we do. Charles Miraglia, General Agent

    Brothers,

Pro-Life Month is upon us, and hopefully your council

has already lined up some great programs. Try to

concentrate on those that will raise awareness in your

    community in some visible way.

Choose Life Banner: What better way to raise

awareness in your community than with a

Choose Life banner in front of your parish? If

you haven’t already, talk to your pastor about

erecting one. It makes a strong statement about

how we as Catholics are staunchly pro-life!

40 Days for Life: The Fall observance began

on September 25 and ends on November 3.

Last spring's movie Unplanned showed the

positive effect of prayer to stop abortion. Also, a

story posted on the 40 Days for Life web site

reported that former abortion mill workers say

that no-show rates for abortion appointments

go up as high as 75% whenever someone is

praying outside the building. We are making a

    difference, Brothers!

Truth Booth: When you pray at an abortion

center, be sure to have enough Truth Booth

cards with you to hand out to the young women

who come (if the opportunity presents itself).

Get the cards printed up now, to be ready!

Need help? Contact state Chairman PGK Mark

Kiernan. Please encourage your members to

support this effort. Put simply: "You Gotta

Show-up," and if you do, who knows how many

lives will you save because a pregnant woman

    didn’t?

Turn Off the TV Day: I hope you are planning

to participate on October 23. We need to make

an impact. Go to prolife.njkofc.org for info and

    resources.

    Have a great pro-life month!

    Culture of Life Programs

  • Brothers, Each year at our State Convention in May, the State Council presents awards at the Friday Awards Session, which is open to the families of Knights as well as the Delegates. While our Columbian Year runs from July 1 – June 30, The Convention being in May sort of shortens the time we have to do our paperwork. Along with the awards presented to Councils for Membership gains and the various Programs, there are also the “big” ones presented, CCD Teacher of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, EMT of the Year, Shield Awards. But the biggest awards are the Family of the Year, Chaplain of the Year and Knight of the Year. The State Chairmen need the completed forms by March 31, so the award winners can be chosen from among the forms sent in by the Councils and plaques made up accordingly.

Chaplain of the Year – When you nominate your Council Chaplain for this award, you could list his accomplishments in Church Activities, Community involvement, Evangelization, Leadership, Parish Activities, Parish Ministries, Lay Ministries as well as Knights of Columbus involvement.

Family of the Month/Year – Together with your Pastor and Parish Leaders, your Council’s Committee picks a Family of the Month for each month, beginning in April and completing the year in March. Your Family of the Month should be one of these 12 families, does not have to be a member of your Council, but should be an exemplary model to others in the Parish and meet the following criteria:

Is the family close? Do they spend quality time together?

Does the family pray together, both at Mass and outside of Mass?

Has the family made significant contributions to the parish community?

Does the family show Catholic family values?

Knight of the Month/Year – Your Council’s Knight of the Month/Year Committee picks a Brother Knight for the honor and the name of one of these 12 Knights should be sent in as Knight of the Year. Forms for these programs can be found in the Grand Knight’s Manual

    Let Me Be Perfectly Clear…

No, I am not paraphrasing a Rich Little imitation. I am seeking to clarify some remaining misconceptions regarding posting and modifying Degrees posted on the State website and in this publication. To repeat what I have written before:

The Admission Degree may be posted by either the Grand Knight or the Financial Secretary, AND one of these two officers are to be listed as the contact for this Degree. That person is to be named “completed by”.

A Formation Degree may ONLY be posted by the Host District Deputy, and he is also the contact.

A Dual (Admission and Formation) Degree, since it involves a Formation Degree is requested by the Host District Deputy. Likewise, the Host DD is also the contact for the Degree.

A Knighthood Degree Application is only “visible” to a District Deputy, and the request must be completed – on-line only – printed, signed and mailed, with a Council check, to State Ceremonials Chairman, State Warden Russell Petrocelli, FM.

    1. There is a basic premise, born of the computer age: Data In / Data Out. Neither “the system” nor I, re-type anything you enter through the Degree Reporting Forms. This is why it is critical, prior to hitting the “Submit Key” that you scroll back up the page and verify that what you entered is correct and accurate.

    2. The Aide to the State Deputy’s role is to read, and verify what has been entered and approve the date requested.

    3. The Aide is NOT responsible to complete forms on behalf of Councils or District Deputies. That would put the onus for accuracy on the Aide and not the host Council or District.

So, what if you hosted a Degree, and no one

showed up? This almost happened when a Degree “host” failed to enter the complete address of the Degree. Our GPS system can only work properly if you give us all the correct details. The most important details are the last 4:

Street address, City, NJ Zip – note commas as shown!

    Brothers,

With the Fall here, the children going back to

school and Halloween around the corner, naturally

our thoughts will begin to move toward the big

Holiday coming at the end of the year, Christmas. I

know, I know, you’re thinking right now “It’s too early

to think about Christmas!” Well, it’s really not too

early. In fact, as of October 1, there are l;ess than

85 shopping days until Christmas, not really a lot of

time when you think about it.

Which leads me to my point. I am sure your

Council has started planning for the upcoming

season. The program you are planning might

include children’s events such as the Keep Christ in

Christmas Poster Contest, and handing out the

Advent and Christmas coloring books. We also have

the Keep Christ in Christmas Program, which has

great Christmas cards for you and your family to

send to others. Use the links above to contact the

Chairmen of those programs and they will forward

the information on their progrmas to you.

Now, onto another matter, which I really don’t

understand why it is happening. Every Council has

members that work hard every month, and we thank

God for these members, having these guys as

members makes it possible to do what the Knights

of Columbus can to make our world a better pl;ace.

Some Councils may recognize these Brothers every

month by naming them Knight of the Month at their

business meetings or putting it in their Newsletters,

    which is a great gesture.

On another subject, every month the state

receives a report from Supreme showing which

Councils in New Jersey filed the Knight of the Month

and Family of the Month forms. Unfortunately, most

months there are only 2 Councils, maybe 3 some

months. We ask that everyone send in the forms,

both to the State Council and the Supreme Offices.

You might be surprised and find one of your

members was named the Supreme Knight of the

Month or Family of the Month. A Family of the Month

nominee does NOT have to be a Knight. All they

need to do is be active at the parish level. Ask your

Pastor for help, if you cant decide on a worthy

candidate. I am sure he willl be more than happy to

    assist you with this.
