dear campus kids, · tips for missing home: sleeping away from home is filled with so many emotions...
TRANSCRIPT
Dear Campus Kids, I’m a very lucky camp director because
we have such a diverse and talented staff. It
makes my job a pleasure, but more importantly it
makes our camp fun and special. Reading any
issue of the “Sundial” gives you a hint at what
I’m talking about. They bring to camp a variety
of backgrounds, skills and experiences and a
shared commitment to make this a fun and safe
summer for every camper. If you ever need a
dose of youthful energy and optimism, come
spend a few hours at camp!
Week Three has been filled with a
tremendous variety of activities and events and
it’s hard to put it on pause for the weekend. But
we are the weekday sleep-away camp, so we’d
better let those buses roll in and take you away
for some fun with your families. We do have our
first Weekend Adventure, though, so a bunch of
you will be heading off for some camping and
lake aquatics and cooking out and water parking.
I know you’ll have a lot of fun.
Everyone will land back here Monday
morning for a Week Four that is so jammed
packed with activities, I don’t know how our
staff is going to pull it off. But since they are
so awesome, it will somehow happen.
Have a fun weekend telling family and
friends about your camp adventures. Be happy,
be safe, be kind. Make a new friend with some
one who’s not expecting it; it’s a great feeling.

Hi everyone! For anyone who hasn’t met me yet, I’m the 6 foot blonde head who is incredibly loud (and incredibly awesome). I’m Daisy! I’m also one half of the counselor fabulous-ness for the Sassy Slinkies! Sup squad!! Since graduating from Hogwarts, majoring in Philosophy, I haven’t really been doing much. I wish to join the Ministry of Magic and work in Magical Law Enforce-ment. But, I have spent this last year trav-ersing the galaxies in a blue box. This sum-mer, I’ve made tons of friends at camp, in-cluding my co-co Bri. (No, she isn’t made of cheese.) I may go and intern for the Wayne Foundation in September but it depends on if I get the interview with Lucius Fox. In my spare time, I like to see how many Oreos I can eat in one sitting. For camp, I have travelled all the way from England with my brother Jack (yes, the counselor). We like to play it cool, so try not to embarrass him by mentioning this! During activities, you’ll usually find me ultimate-ing, fencing, longboarding, photographing, and just being downright fantastic. Don’t be afraid to come and say hey! Autobots roll out, safe.

Hey Sundial Readers! Another week has flown by here at Campus Kids and a busy one it has been. We've had another group of amazingly talented kids put together an awesome talent show. Special shout out to the counsellors Kiwi, Lynn, Millie and Jordan who helped put it all together... I wonder if Bands ever found his voice? Talent shows always amaze me at how many hidden talents our kids have. I love Thursday nights because we get a chance to see just what everyone can do. From the Older Girls headquarters in Insley, we've welcomed a brand new bunk group, the Hoola Doopers to our dorms/lives this session. We are
now complete with all our bunk groups and are just waiting for a few more girls to come join us throughout the summer. We've had a great week altogether starting with a huge division game of speed friending (like speed dating) which was a great chance for us all to get to know each other a bit better. I'm so excited for us all to grow closer as the summer goes on.
But for now it’s Friday and the buses are on their way home, I'll be counting down the seconds until I see Vanderhoof rolling back in on Monday morning and you're all back in my life.

Hi Everybody,
My name is Daryn and I’m one of the counselors for the freshman girls, the Build-a-Bunkers! This is my first year as a coun-
selor but my sixth summer at CKNJ, as I was a camper for five years. The summers I spent at CKNJ were the best of my life.
Every year I was fortunate enough to be able to look forward to campfires, drama games, talent shows, and the numerous
other activities that make Campus Kids special. Some of my favorite memories are just of me and my bunkmates playing
Frisbee during shade and various card games during bunk time. There was never a dull moment, only fun and endless
laughter.
Now as a counselor, it is extremely heartwarming to watch other kids have these same experiences. To make sure that my
campers have a great time here at camp, I set high expectations for myself. I want to live up to the legacy that all the great
past Campus Kids counselors have left. I’m always asking myself, “How can I improve myself for next time?” It’s been chal-
lenging, but to see the happy smiling faces of the campers every day, to see the joy in their eyes when they learn a new
skill, to hear their laughter fill the hallways makes it all worth it.
See you Monday!
XOXO,
Daryn Javer

Hi everyone! My name is Jane Frankel and I'm 16 years old. I’m a Staffie, and being a Staffie is so exciting since I get to do a lot of awesome things around camp. There are two teams, A and B. I'm on team A (which stands for awesome!) This means you can find me at changeover, at the pool lifeguarding, making evening program awards in Annie and all over campus doing things for James and Gemma. My favorite part, though, is definitely lifeguarding because I get to inter-act with the campers! Even though it's a serious job I get to see the campers grow so much in the water and enjoy great evening programs like pool party! So far this summer has been amazing. Rock of July was definitely a highlight and there's so much more to come! On this past Tuesday night, I joined the seniors' evening activity which was Fear Factor. I had so much fun seeing everyone participate, but the clean-up was definitely messy. As a camper evening activity was one of my favorite things and it's so great to see everyone having as much fun as I did. As always, the talent show last night was incredible. I hope if you guys see me around camp that you say hey, I'm always excited to meet you guys. We're going to have the best summer ever!!

Tips for Missing Home:
Sleeping away from home is filled with so many emotions for our Campus Kids families. And even though our campers are having fun-filled days, hearing their favorite adult’s voice can trigger some feel-ings of home missing. Here are some quick tips for encouraging your camper to have the best summer
possible: 1. Tell your camper missing home is normal. It means they love you, their family, their friends, their pets etc. Everyone misses home sometimes (even the counselors!). 2. Empathize with your campers’ fears but try your best to separate your fears from theirs. 3. Tell your camper you believe in their ability to succeed at camp. 4. Refer your camper to people who are here at camp with them for support (their counselors, oth-er support staff). Encourage your camper to be honest and ask for what he/she needs in the moment, instead of waiting to tell you on the phone. 5. Tell your camper you want them to have FUN. Share your own apprehensions with other adults, not your camper. 6. Ask your camper about the “highs” of their day, not the “lows”.
~Nicole Fanelli, Camper Support Coordinator
"If you teach and then you
motivate, after you motivate you
strive to be the best of the best. Never
settle for anything less than what
you put in. Then you will under-
stand what it takes to be above av-
erage and to be great." -Darnell
Every day I wake up to this quote on my
phone to remind myself that I have to live
life above average and perform above av-
erage. I want to separate myself from be-
ing mediocre and strive to be great. I set
high expectations and live beyond to push
past my limits. If I do this, then I will be-
come successful.

Notes from the CK Office Future Weekend Adventures We’ve got a trip out this weekend, but
there are still two more planned for this
summer. As of now, they have some
openings, but don’t delay if you want
to be part of one or both of them!
These trips are for current campers
who are entering 7th grade or older.

Lights, Cameras, Action! During part of Week 4 we will have
professional videographers at camp
shooting some new footage for the
Campus Kids video and website. No
special prep needed; just have fun like
you always do!
Extensions Some parents have asked about extend-
ing their camper’s stay. We do have
space in some groups (not all) for
Weeks 5-6. We also have space for
Week 7. Contact the camp office as
soon as possible if you are considering
this.
Week 7! We’ve got a special plan for our final
week of camp this summer. It features
three all-camp events, including a
camp swim meet/water carnival, an all-
camp campfire with a staff talent show,
and (of course) our 11th annual Camp-
stock music and arts festival on the last
night of camp. This is in addition to
regular camp activities. It’s an excit-
ing celebration of summer!
Reunion is December 4 Don’t let anything else invade your
calendar for that date. It’s a fun event
not to be missed!
Hey everyone! I can’t believe I’m saying this as we are nearly halfway through our summer, but Week 3 has been unbelievably great. I find it very sad how fast this summer is going, but it just keeps get-ting better and better as the weeks go on! So let me tell you a little bit about what we have done this week in the arts department. For all you bookworms out there, if you signed up for Arts and Crafts, you can show everyone your new amazing book marks you made! I’ve seen some really great designs-- they are all so awe-some! In painting we have been using watercolors (my personal favorite). When all of you guys and gals go home this week, don’t forget to bring some postcard stamps with you so you can draw and paint a postcard to send home or to a friend.
We have also started some MDOs this week. For anyone who doesn’t know what a “MDO” is, it means “multi-day option”, and, in art, it is where you spend 2 to 3 days doing a really awesome piece of artwork. We started this Week’s MDOs off with bead looming and paper lanterns. I can’t wait for all you guys to take them home to show off! They are all so good!
Well that’s a sneak peak into the arts department, let’s tell you all a little bit about what has been going on in my Round Up. We have a counselor from New Zealand called Taylor. He's a cool skater/surfer who has been teaching the full division about his culture back home. There’s nothing better than getting all of the younger boys to learn a New Zealand chant called the “Haka”. The Haka is a New Zealand rugby chant which started way back in October of 1888! And now we’re bring it the July 2016 Campus kids talent show!
That’s just a little bit of what has gone on this week. I hope you all have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you all come off the bus again on Monday. Take it easy guys and have a safe weekend.
Shaka Bruhs!

Teamwork is a concept
that most parents want their
children to learn. Being a co-
operative and active member
of a team means that you have
skills that will help you be suc-
cessful in college and at work and life in general.
We are helping kids practice their teamwork skills
here at camp. That goes for all activities, not just
sports.
In drama, teamwork is about supporting eve-
ry member of the cast and crew, even if we don’t
get the role we were hoping for. Some kids stick
with a production no matter what, while others drop
out when they don’t get a big enough part. The
skilled actor is a valued member of the company,
but the production thrives on a team of people each
fulfilling a role to the best of his/her ability.
In art we are working on our individual crea-
tions, but how we interact with the artists around
us determines whether we have a supportive envi-
ronment or a judgmental one. Artists don’t work in
isolation, they need social connection and encour-
agement.
And, of course, in sports it’s obvious to most
people how important the team is. But we shouldn’t
forget that it’s not always easy to hold back from
scoring every goal and to let some teammates have a
chance to sharpen their skills. When the whole
team improves, we win more matches and feel bet-
ter about it. It takes greater skill to support your
whole team rather than just be an individual stand-
out.
We do admire the most skilled among us, but
we usually admire more those who also support, en-
courage and share. They make the team outstand-
ing and able to sustain its success over the long
haul.
I’ll never forget the night I sat behind the
basket watching Michael Jordan play. But I’ll also
remember some of his wise words: “Talent wins
games, but teamwork and intelligence wins champi-
onships.”
There’s more than one way to keep score.

Hey Campus Kids!!!
Week 3 is wrapping up and what another incredible week we have had! The space-themed soccer tournament has finally kicked off and we have already had some incredibly and close games. In addition to the soccer tournament we’ve also had the highly anticipated Ulti-mate specialty start up and that is another thing that is great to see! Everyone is playing at such a high level and everyone is already improving so much! This week was also really fun for me because we had another talent show and everyone was so great! It is always so awe-some to see the vast amount of talent that we have at this camp! I can’t help but look forward to next week to see the climax of both the Ultimate spe-cialty and the soccer tournament, but the fitness specialty as well! Furthermore, I won’t say ex-
actly what it is in here to keep it a surprise, but everyone should be getting ready for a really cool Rob-Lou-Jen MDO next week! That about wraps it up for me this week! I’ll just end with a quick shout out to the Hasbros and wish everyone a very happy and
relaxing weekend! See you all on Monday!

Mr. Apple was on his apple farm, when suddenly, he saw an or-ange! “What is this doing here?” he asked himself. Out of the corner of his eye, he also saw a bunch of grapes. He was so confused that he asked himself, “What is going on here?” Suddenly all the fruits start-ed to dance around Mr. Apple. “Oh my gosh!” he yelled. The grapes, oranges, and apples made a circle around Mr. Apple and wobbled around violently. All the fruits froze when they heard a large family make their way over. The family all yelled, “Yay! We can’t wait to pick up some fresh fruit!”........ “Mr. Jarvis, the operation was successful. You can call your family in to see you now.” Frederick Jarvis opened his eyes and looked around groggily. A white, sterile-looking room with a cot (on which he was stretched) greeted his gaze. Then he remembered. A kidney transplant, yes, that was it.

Hey CKNJ! Week Three has brought lots of energy from the Candyland Girls. We have some awesome campers who were here last session and we have a lot of new girls who have easily jumped into the emoji-crazed, unicorn loving, coloring fanatic activities that the younger girls are all known for loving so much. A lot of the Candyland Girls have participated in the Week Three talent show in which they showed off their singing and dancing skills! Watching my girls perform on stage is one of my favorite moments at camp because I’ve watched them prepare during their bunk times as they perfect their acts and then seeing all their hard work come
together on stage is such a rewarding feeling. Art this week has been full of fun with watercolor painting, origami, silly comic strip making, alphabet pasta ceramic pieces, and, my personal favorite, fuse beads! A number of campers have joined us multiple times in the art room this week by signing up for one of our two Multi-Day Options-- paper mache lanterns and bead looming! These projects are a little bit more detailed than our normal activities and take a bit longer to complete than one period. Next week we will be having puppet making for campers in our older division so if you are interested in sewing or pup-
pets and are in the older division, be sure to sign up for puppetry! ~Chelsea Semeraro, Younger Girls Head Counselor/Fine Arts Co-Coordinator
Hi everyone, I'm Millie! :) I'm one of the few, but great, British counselors working at
camp this summer. I am a counselor for the older girls,
specifically for the dupers, the Hoola Doopers! Shout out
to my amazing co-co, Theresa!
Some information about me: I'm originally from Warwick-
shire in England but during the year I'm currently studying
human biosciences at Plymouth University.
At camp, you'll find me on the hockey field with my fellow
Twister Sister Liz playing field
hockey or splashing around during
swim instruction in the pool. I also
take part in other sports like tennis
and Rob-Lou-Jen.
This is my first year at Campus
Kids New Jersey (and in America!)
and I'm loving it so far! The camp has a very energetic and
enthusiastic atmosphere that I've never felt anywhere else
before. After two weeks of being a “floater”, I'm over the
moon that my bunk group is finally here and I'm so excited
for the rest of camp! Can’t wait for the next four weeks!

Hey Campus Kids! I’m Holly and I have had the most amaz-ing first experience of an American summer camp here at CKNJ! I have spent most of my time in the gymnastics room which has been great fun meeting you all and helping you guys become amazing gymnasts! I am currently working on the set design for the next camp play, “Frozen”, which I am super excited for! “The Jungle Book” was so amazing, I can’t wait to watch another play. It is so great to see so much talent in one camp. I have loved every second of being a junior girls counselor-- GO FRIZBAES!!! I have such a love-ly and energetic bunch who keep me laughing and smiling all day. I look forward to the rest of the summer,
Holly Gibbs, Counselor for Frizbaes xxx
Hello all! Cedric here! Since my first few weeks at Campus Kids, I’ve become grateful and humbled by the atmosphere and new experiences. The activities bring us together in creatively productive ways, and the friendships we make in and out of bunk groups provide a great, comfortable atmosphere! This week and next week, I am directing “Frozen”, which takes place in an area loosely based on where my family is from, Norway. It is a privilege to be tak-ing on this show. I am already overwhelmed with the talent I have witnessed from the cast. I am looking forward to the rehearsals to come. I already know that we will be having a lot of fun with this play! Campers here have shown me all varieties of talent, creativity, hard work, sportsmanship, friendship, and teamwork like no other learning experience. It has been awesome and I’m looking forward to future weeks at this highly unique camp that I work at! Peace!

Hello CKNJ! It’s your friendly neighborhood Tweener Boys Head Counselor, Andrew! Every week at camp feels busier than the last. We just had our fantastic talent show this last Thursday and I know I’m looking forward to our production of Frozen next Thursday night! On that note, if you are in the show, please consult the costume list under this article. As I go through these weeks at camp I find the days slipping by very quickly. So, something I have started doing, and I encourage everyone else to do, is to take a couple seconds each day to be “in the moment”. Take 3 seconds to appreciate the beauty of the nature around you, or the feeling of being with your friends, and commit that moment to memory. So much of camp flies by, if you don’t stop to take a look around every once in awhile, you could miss it. Myself, I find it very therapeutic to go into nature and take some time to reflect on whatever’s going on my life. Whether that be work, social, or school stress. And in those nature-bound excursions I often end up just listening to the sounds of the forest; the birds in the trees, rushing water of the creek, some animals rustling around nearby. In that vein, I present my 3
rd crossword puzzle. As always, if you give me a completed copy next Monday you’ll get a prize!
At ease, my friends, Andrew J. Imbalzano

Hey Campus Kids! My name is Jen, and I’m a Team B Staff Assistant. You can find me around camp either taking pictures of activities, working in the nurses’ of-fice, in the main office at Annie Hall, or all over the art building while helping out Chelsea and Ross. I came to camp for three years as a camper, last year being my Duper year, and this is my first as a Staffie. Feel free to come say hi to any of the other “Connect 14” Staffies! So far this summer, camp has been a blast! Last week’s showing of “Jungle Book” was very entertaining and was definitely loved by everyone at camp! This week’s talent show was filled with musical performances and many laughs. I can not believe it’s already the end of week 3! I am so in love with having this job and getting to spend yet another summer at my FAVORITE place on earth!!! I know this summer is going to continue to be a great one, and I hope to see you soon!

Hello..... It's Dani!
It’s Week 3 already at camp! It’s a new start of a ses-
sion and the amount of campers has grown tremendously!
You can feel the increase of energy all around campus! With
more campers here, we have more players for sport tourna-
ments. This week we have started the spaced-themed soccer
tournament! We have also started the Ultimate Frisbee specialty this week! We are learning how
to throw, cut to get open, set a stack, and much more. The improvement of campers is so visible,
even after only a couple of days! Next week Nick, Zoe, and Daisy are setting up some exciting Ul-
timate games and skill practices that will help everyone become more effective players. Another
exciting sport event that will start up on Monday is the fitness specialty! This is the second fitness
specialty this summer. However, this one is different than the first. The specialty is focusing on the
five components of fitness, which include cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular
strength, flexibility, and body composition. To accomplish this, we are doing Zumba, yoga, run-
ning activities, and weight room activities. Lastly for sports, my glow of the day was playing Rob-
Lou-Jen! It made me really excited for the upcoming Rob-Lou-Jen MDO (multi-day option)! A
mini tournament will be happening in this MDO! Get ready for it!
My middle girls' division, the Fruit Ninjas, have been enjoying the evening activities very
much. We have had pool parties, played Fear Factor, played Deal or No Deal, and have had
Wednesday Night Lights! We all have been having a blast at CKNJ this summer and are ready to
make even more memories!

Why The Sea Is Salty by Sydney Logozzo, G7b One day a long time ago, there was a king who went to the beach with his family. It was the first time any of them had gone! Back then, the water was fresh and drinkable, but the royal family was disgusted. Fresh water? It reminded them that all of them, and nobody else, might I add, wanted a different type of water, but they didn’t know what type yet. So they set up a contest for anyone who found their favorite water, with a prize of lots of money.
Suddenly, everyone was in a race to please the king. There was one lady who was desperate for money, so she made a bubbling concoction of tasty fruit water. The day of the contest, someone stole her bottle of water and replaced it with a pot of salty water! Still, she had to try at least, and she handed it to the king right before the thief did. When the king tried it, he was amazed at the taste. “This is exquisite!” he declared. “Just what I like! In fact, it is so good that the whole world should taste this!” He handed the lady the money and hur-ried off to the ocean. Then, he had gallons and gallons of the water dumped into the sea. Then the royal guards helped the lady catch the thief, and she still sells it today in stores. That is how sparkling water was born, and why the sea is salty.

Hello everyone! My name is Margo and I am a first-year
counselor at Campus Kids! Over these past three
weeks, I have enjoyed leading and assisting with
many sport activities here at camp. I also got to
jump in on some of the art actives, too! One art
activity in particular that I found to be very fun that
I haven’t done in the past was bead looming. I’m su-
per excited to assist with more activities that I typi-
cally don’t get a chance to do because learning
something new is always fun.
I also had a blast at Rock of July during
the first session. It was really enjoyable to see all of
the talent that we have on campus! Singing along
to the tunes with the
campers was a great way
to end a beautifully warm
July 5th. For this ses-
sion, I am running the
space-themed soccer
tournament along with
two other counselors,
Joe and Zac. We love
seeing all the kids play “football”, not
“soccer”(according to Zac and Joe), and demon-
strating their impressive skills! Thank you campers
and staff for making these past three weeks so
amazing. I can’t wait for the rest! Shout out to the
Pogo Stick Posse!
