ESSince last year’s Annual Conference, we’ve practiced through a rollercoaster of challenges, including multiple disasters, the most significant tax reform in over a decade, and the appointment of key leaders at U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This year’s Conference will provide a venue for leading practitioners in the industry to discuss effects, challenges posed, and potential solutions to the latest developments in affordable housing and community development law. Attendees will also learn about opportunities occurring on a local level that affect the nation’s affordable housing and community development resources. In addition to perennial favorites such as hot topics and a state-of-the-market panel, panels will cover the fundamentals in financing affordable housing transactions and the nuts and bolts of practice. The Conference will also recognize the invaluable contributions of the Forum’s members to the advancement of affordable housing and community development across the nation.

Newly appointed HUD leadership will discuss the priorities and agenda for HUD and its programs in the coming years at the Thursday morning plenary session. The HUD General Counsel, Paul Compton; Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing, Anna Maria-Farias; and Assistant Secretary for Community Planning & Development, Neil Ratcliff will speak. Subject to Senate confirmation, the Assistant Secretary for Housing and the Assistant Secretary for Public & Indian Housing will also participate. The Friday plenary session will honor the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.

Once again, we will hold two Wednesday afternoon sessions, one in partnership between the Forum’s HUD practice committee and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development at HUD headquarters, and the other, organized by the Forum’s Tax Credit Practice Committee, offers an introduction to and in-depth discussion on Qualified Opportunity Zones, a new economic development tool created under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The Conference will provide excellent opportunities for networking, including: a Speed Networking Session at the First Timers and Young Lawyers Reception on Wednesday evening, a Thursday evening networking reception and Forum practice committee meetings. These are available to all Conference registrants.

Some state and local jurisdictions have adopted laws to enhance the housing rights of tenants and the rights to shelter.
