AV Gala 2019

This years’ annual AMADEUS Gala took place in the historical Brahms Saal of the Wiener Musikverein. Guests enjoyed an innovative programme designed and produced by the AV students and staff under the direction of Karen Goh, the Board Appointed Director of AMAA. “Dr Ignaz Semmelweis: The Muse in the AV Hallways” is an original production and featured the highlights of the AMADEUS Vienna campus and cultural heritage. The storyline follows the spirit of Dr Ignaz Semmelweis, the well-known 19th century Hungarian physician, has a tale to tell as he returns to the lush grounds of renowned clinic named in his honour in the 18th district of Vienna.

Dr Ignaz Semmelweis

To his surprise, he discovers that AMADEUS International School has occupied part of the premises and he sets forth on a journey to learn more about his new neighbours. Dr Ignaz Semmelweis pursues the hallways of his favourite haunt and muses over the splendour of the music, art, and dance he experiences in the contemporary home of artistic scholars. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff and teachers of AMADEUS International School Vienna. Their energy and spirit brought this Gala to its amazing outcome and is truly an inspiration to our students. To our dear students, you brought down the house at the beautiful Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein. They were all shining stars of AMADEUS International School Vienna. An incredible thank you to our guests of honour, Mag. Silvia NOSSEK, Währing district Mayor, and Ms. Renate HOLM, we were delighted to have you share the evening with us. We look forward to next year and can’t wait to see what the AMADEUS community will achieve next! Lotus Education Fund

AV Community

Throughout the 2018-2019 Academic year Amadeus supported the Lotus Educational Fund by holding a number of wonderful events to raise awareness about the charity and to raise money. What is the Lotus Educational Fund? Girls in rural Laos face many obstacles to accessing education. The Lotus Educational Fund provides girls with the opportunity to attain quality education and empowers them to make sound decisions in their relationships, careers and life. This is achieved by getting girls into school and hosting Life Skills workshops. The girls learn about migration, unsafe migration and human trafficking. They also learn about their developing body and menstrual cycle, this information is presented by an Australian doctor and translated into Laos. Other experiences such as sport, yoga, dance, drama, art and self-esteem sessions are also provided to the girls in the program. What has Amadeus been doing to support Lotus Educational Fund? Ms Helen is the Early Years teacher and also the Global Co-Ordinator for the Lotus Educational Fund. Through this connection Amadeus students became aware of the poor living conditions and the need to raise awareness and funds to help the girls. Many students saw a power point presentation and really wanted to take action and help. The AV Action Group acted throughout the year by holding bake sales. AV Action raised enough money and they are now sponsoring 6 girls for the year. Well done AV Action! To celebrate the 100th day of school in February the vision was to raise €100. The whole school got involved, all the students, teachers, parents and staff contributed very generously to the fundraising. An incredible amount of €1548 was raised. A huge thank you to all of the Amadeus Community. Why is this important? This action truly demonstrates the Learner Profile in action – students demonstrating how they are caring, inquirers, thinkers and knowledgeable. Their fundraising will significantly support girls within the Lotus programme to continue their Secondary education, contribute to a lunch programme, help them have a tutor to improve their studies and empower these girls in Laos to have a better future. The ability to be compassionate and have empathy for those less fortunate lead to the Amadeus Community taking Action.

Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition

IB Focus

The MYP personal project is a student-centred and age-appropriate practical exploration in which students consolidate their learning throughout the programme. This long-term project is designed as an independent learning experience of approximately 25 hours. The personal project formally assesses students’ ATL skills for self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration. Students are encouraged to practise and strengthen their ATL skills, to connect classroom learning engagements with personal experience, and to develop their own interests for lifelong learning. This year’s exhibition included fashion designs, books, podcasts, websites, and even a bread roll. It was fascinating to see how students made each project creative and personal.

DP Arts Showcase

IB Focus

The Diploma Arts Showcase is a celebration of our Grade 12 students' creative accomplishments in visual art, music, and dance. A combination of art exhibition and performances, the evening highlighted the quality of their final IB Diploma work. Grade 11 Diploma students were involved on a smaller scale to demonstrate their level of progress being now midway through the course, and to prepare them for the year to come. The evening was well attended by the AV community who enjoyed browsing through the art exhibition and taking in the impressive music and dance performances. Well done to our DP students, you represented the spirit of AV in your dedication to creativity and excellence!

Co-Curricular All Shook Up

“A giant thank you to all the students, co-curricular teachers, and parents who made this show possible. My heart is so full knowing everyone gave their energy and time to create a beautiful performance. My biggest sadness is that the show is now over and we have to say goodbye to the story, though those characters can forever live on inside the actors. I’m looking forward to the next term with my class and for the exciting collaborations that are possible between theater and music!" - Mr Fisher

Our experienced chefs enjoy the challenge of preparing foods from all around the world that reflects the diversity of our international student body. This year AV participated in a global gourmet festival to celebrate French gastronomy on 21 March 2019. Our Chef de Cuisine prepared a French meal of Boeuf Bourguignon and Pommes Duchesse for the students and staff. It was beautiful AND delicious!! Bon Appétit!

AV on the ice and slopes! One of the amazing things about Austria is you don’t need to travel far to enjoy nature. During this year’s Winter Project Week AV students enjoyed stunning Austrian views, learned new skills, and had fun together! EY3 through Grade 2 enjoyed the winter sunshine from the rooftop ice skating rink of Engelmann’s ice rink and tested their skills on the ice. Highlights included learning to skate backwards and free skating on the big rink. Grade 3 through 5 and Secondary hit the slopes and enjoyed a week of Austria’s beloved pastime: skiing and snowboarding. It was a fun time of bonding and enjoying the great outdoors!

This term the AV community enjoyed three special performances by professional musicians as a part of the AMAA “Heal the World” concert series. At the beginning of the term, AV had the honor of hearing the Irkutsk Governor's Symphony Orchestra perform. This reputable orchestra from Irkutsk, Russia played at AMADEUS in preparation for their concert in Der Goldene Saal at the Wiener Musikverein. In the beginning of March, the incredible Trio Immersio played for AV. Trio Immersio is a fresh, dynamic and charismatic ensemble from Vienna, that brings new life to the classic pieces of the piano trio repertoire. At the end of March, Alfredo Ovalles entertained guests with his fresh take on classical pieces. For Alfredo, “growing inside seemingly different universes made music seem like one single world, where borders were very blurry and performances in one genre could be informed by the experiences gained in a different, apparently unrelated type of stage”. We are looking forward to the next concerts coming to AV!

AMADEUS Vienna recently was honored to host two incredible storytellers. On 28th March the second Austrian Reading Day took place, which was started by ECHO Medienhaus Wien in 2018. At AV we want to promote the art of reading and therefore continued the tradition to have a reading session on that day. Mag. Strachota, the CEO of an Austrian publishing house read a humorous chapter from a book by Prof. Rudolf Taschner and he shared with our secondary students about the work of a publishing house. He even invited a group of students to visit him at this publishing house in order to get a look behind the scenes. Andy Wright has built a career in empowering thousands of pupils to communicate better, embrace and share their own experiences, and celebrate their culture and the cultures of others. The core of his repertoire is in Māori folktales, myths, and legends; traditional narratives from the Aboriginal Australians and English folk and fairy tales. He has adapted many physical aspects of the Māori culture to create physical stories. A highlight for AV students was learning to do a haka and hearing the story of Maui .

In honour of our host country, Austria, the AV staff and students celebrated Fasching by dressing up in their best costumes, parading through campus, and eating Krapfen. Ms de Blouw dressed as a very authentic interpretation of Vermeer’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring”. Meanwhile, students were searching high and low for Mr Poetscher as “Where’s Waldo”. The Secondary Student Council turned the cafeteria into a 50s diner complete with swinging tunes and fun activities for the primary students. Everyone enjoyed being silly for the day and celebrating together!

“We are sad to see grade 12 leave, but we had a joyful celebration to say goodbye in a proper way. The grade 12's have been a lovely group of students who have been role models for the younger grades. We will miss seeing them in homeroom each morning. It is always hard to send them off on study leave but luckily, it is only 50 days until we reunite again at graduation. YOU CAN DO IT! ” – Ms Ball & Ms de Vries
