DEAR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES OF LFHS HOCKEYThis year we celebrate a milestone anniversary, 40 years of Lake Forest Scout Hockey. The rich and lasting Scout hockey traditions live on at the High School level through our growing Hockey Club. Once again, we have strong participation, evidenced by our full rosters. I welcome back our returning players and families and together the entire Club offers a warm welcome to several new players and families joining the program this season.

The spring and summer programs again enjoyed excellent and growing participation from players and coaches, where many of our existing and incoming players played and practiced together and kept their skills up in a fun environment. Great coaching is an important part of any hockey program and once again we are very fortunate to have what I consider the best coaching staff in all of Illinois High School Hockey. Now in his 7th season as Varsity Head Coach and Hockey Director, John Murphy, recently elected to the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame, leads the coaching program with skill and passion. Coach Murphy again is ably assisted by former Scout star and former Juniors player Johnny Murphy. Ryan Weber, JV Head Coach, has also returned for the 2015/2016 season. Coach Ryan, also a skilled former player at the Division 1 and Juniors level, has been an excellent influence on our young players as he continues to preside over the critical role of developing young JV players into hopeful Varsity athletes. Ryan will be assisted this year by Scott Minarcik, a former Lake Forest resident and LFA Prep team standout. We look forward to Scott’s contribution. Joe Brickner returns again this year as well as Varsity Assistant and Club Goalie Instructor. We are fortunate to have Joe, a former Scout and accomplished collegiate goalie working directly with our goalies. Much of Scout Hockey is supported by tireless volunteers and I am appreciative in recognizing Coach Bill O’Connor for his generosity in helping develop our JV hockey players.

Scout Hockey enjoys an excellent relationship with Lake Forest College. For many years it has been our home rink and we appreciate the relationship and support offered us by Jackie Slaats, Director of Athletics/Senior advisor to the President, and Brian Bruha, Director of Athletic Facilities. We encourage the entire Scout Hockey community to continue support the college and their teams.

We are appreciative of our relationship with Lake Forest High School. While high school hockey is not an IHSA sanctioned sport and we receive no funding from the public school system, the relationship is excellent and important to our hockey program.

Once again, as it has for so many years, the important tradition of our Christmas Tree and Holiday Green Sales Initiative thrives. Our players learn early life lessons as sales people, making phone calls and knocking on doors for support, while offering excellent products as they seek to raise funds in support of the program. I would like to extend a special thanks to Kim Kazarian and her other volunteer assistants who effectively manage the program. Tree and greens sales, the advertisers in this yearbook, and the occasional philanthropic donations from generous supporters, are the main sources of funding for the program and all play a vital role in it vibrancy. Please remember to patronize the many generous advertisers in this yearbook as often as possible.

Lastly, thanks to all the Lake Forest Scout Hockey supporters and the student and parent fan base who come out to watch the players. The “hockey scene” is greatly enhanced by your presence and we hope to see you at all of our games! For a wealth of information about schedules, rosters, game scores and highlights please visit our newly designed website at www.scouthockey.com.

See you around the rink and GO SCOUTS!

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all the new and existing Scout Hockey players and parents. We are extremely excited about the 2015- 2016 season. The number of young players and the high level of skill that this young class brings to our program will prove to be a solid foundation to build a very competitive hockey program.

Please find my brief coaching philosophy listed below and our goals for all players and the team this season. High School Hockey can be an exciting and rewarding opportunity for your player to learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun. Our Scout coaching staff will set the same expectation’s for all players and we believe that by providing a positive environment while competing within the highest level, your players development will follow. In most cases a player will get out what they put in. On that note, it is especially rewarding to see players improve their skills and development over the summer months.

Our coaching staff will convey the importance to all players to trust in their teammates and compete as a team not individuals. Without this key ingredient a high level of team success will be hard to achieve.

Coaching Philosophy1. I believe that players gain confidence and a love for the game through positive feedback from parents, coaches, and other players. Skill level develops at different rates for kids, but effort and having fun can always be achieved. I try to always provide positive feedback for effort.2. I think it’s important that a coach takes more than a casual interest in the players. I strive to talk with all the players 1 on 1 at some point during the practices and games. I may not be successful getting to every player each day, but I want them to know that I’m interested in what they have to say and more importantly, I want them to know that their coach likes them as a person also.3. I believe in trying to make practices as fun and entertaining for the players as possible, while providing the practice and instruction that they need to improve. I’ve found that players respond to well to structured and organized practices. 4. Teamwork and developing friendships is an important part of any team sport. I always try to tell players how important it is for them to support each other and to always be positive towards their teammates.5. Competition is an important element of any sport and as kids grow they naturally become more competitive. Effort and attitude is my focus. If we can achieve that, then chances are we’ll win the number of games that we are capable of winning.

Objectives:Help our players develop the skills necessary to be successful at this level and to prepare our players for their next season.1. To have fun and help each player develop a love for the game.2. Learn about the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.3. Give positive reinforcement based on effort rather than results. 4. Provide a safe and healthy environment for all players on the team.5. Have fun and always give your best effort.6. I expect players to always show respect for the coaches, parents, and other players.7. To continue to establish the ground work that will help build a tradition of winning within the Scout Hockey Program.

I’m very excited for the 2015 -2016 season and equally excited to see the success that will follow this year’s group of young men.

Best Regards,Coach John Murphy2 3

Unfortunately summer’s over, but we are once again blessed with another HOCKEY SEASON, and there is no better time of the year. The JV Coaching Staff welcomes all of the new and returning Scout Players to the 2015-16 season!

As a coaching staff, first we are very excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this organization. The Scout organization is second to none. The parents, players and the volunteer board members deserve a lot of credit for maintaining, operating and affording the players a great place to play during their High School years. There are so many special people who dedicate a lot of time and effort to the club, and our coaching staff would like to thank them in advance for their efforts. I’d also like to thank all of the parents in advance for supporting their players, providing an opportunity for them to play hockey for the Lake Forest High School Hockey Club and for supporting our Coaching Staff.

Looking forward to the excitement, and the challenges this season will hold, the expectations are high for the returning players as well as the newest additions. We want to congratulate the JV players from last season who will be joining the Varsity Team this year, and wish them the best of luck with Coach Murphy and his staff.

This year’s JV fabric is woven with skilled returning players and several talented freshman. All of which should produce a productive team and a promising season. Our commitment as a coach is to help develop the character and skills of each player and strive for victories both on and off the ice. We firmly believe through hard work, making individual sacrifices and being committed to their team, each player will have positive experiences that will lead them to success both on and off the ice. These victories are what this great game of HOCKEY is all about.

As coaches we have high expectations and want each member of the JV team to display respect, sportsmanship, accountability, commitment and a willingness to progress as a player. We also want to thank the parents in advance for supporting our coaching staff and their players throughout the season. We are honored to be a part of this organization, and look forward to seeing each player develop and grow throughout the season.

It’s a great time for HOCKEY!

SENIOR CLASS OF 2016

#6 KYLE BELFORTII began my hockey career when I was seven years old. I played in Wellesley Massachusetts for the Wellesley Raiders. I played for them for two years of mites, and two as a squirt. When I was ten years old, I got traded (without my consent) to the Highland Park Falcons. Although I didn’t want to move, I definitely enjoyed my time playing as a Falcon. I made some good friends, and have a lot of fun memories playing for the Falcons. After four years of Falcons hockey, I decided to take my talents to the Lake Forest Scouts. This will be my fourth year of Scout Varsity hockey, and it has been an extremely memorable stretch of hockey. I simply love the game, and don’t think I’d be whole without it. I will absolutely miss playing high school hockey, as it has been a very important part of my life. I want to thank my parents for always putting up with my early games and driving me everywhere, taking me to tournaments, and always cheering me on in the stands. I want to thank coach Murph also for being a great mentor to me within the past four seasons. Thanks you to everyone who has helped me in the past, I will truly miss Scout Hockey!

#15 JOHN SCHLACHTENHAUFEN (not pictured)Hockey is a great sport and has been a meaningful part of my high school experience. When it’s over I will miss being a part of a great team of guys and representing my school. I’d like to thank my parents for all their support, for driving me to lots of late-night practices & games, and for living with the perpetual stench of my hockey bag. I’d also like to thank the coaches the time they have invested in each of us.

#30 JAY BAKERI want to start by giving a huge “Thank You!” to my family. They have been, and always will be, by my side -- not pushing but rather encouraging me and being supportive when support’s needed. When I was in the first grade, my best friend urged me to play organized hockey for the first time. I was not good; however, a passion was developing. I have been playing hockey since that first practice of Falcon’s House League. The first thing I fell in love with was the goalie position, which I wasn’t even playing at the time. It wasn’t until midway through my second year that I strapped on the pads for good. I moved clubs when I was a Bantam and began to play for the Glenview Stars. My two years there go down as my greatest development period to date. I began to really commit myself to the sport and was fortunate enough to make the Varsity team my freshman year of high school. I have played under the Murphy’s ever since. I believe the best parts of playing within this organization (and what I will miss the most) are the split between the brotherhood you form with your teammates on and off the ice, and having the community come out to the home games. Being a school sport, we get a pretty big crowd and in my opinion, that makes the games all the more fun. I don’t know what my future holds, but I want to make the most out of this year and keep all doors open moving forward.

#47 KEITH DAVISI started playing hockey when I was about four years old and loved it ever since. The high temp, big hits, and the fans of Lake Forest hockey made me want to play for the Scouts. When I started going to the high school, my favorite part about the Scout program was the team bonding we did throughout the season both on and off the ice. I’d like to thank my parents for their endless support throughout my hockey career. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

#23 JACK LANDISAs long as I can remember hockey has been a huge part of my life. I started skating when I was four, and begin my travel hockey career when I was seven. Over the years my skills and confidence as a hockey player grew. This was all leading up to my tryout for the LF hockey team. My first year was spent on the JV team where Coach Webb and Coach Tommy helped me learn even more about hockey. The next year everything that I had learned about hockey was applied to my first year on the Varsity team. Over the next two years I continued to work and grow my skills. I would not be where I am today without the amazing coaches I’ve had over the years, especially Coach Murphy, Johnny, and Joe. I would also like to thank my parents for their support of me over the years. Now, as I enter my final year for the Lake Forest Scouts, the feeling is bitter sweet. I am sad because this is my last year of competitive hockey, but also very excited to give it my all in the upcoming season!

#10 RYAN CAMARDOThe first time I ever put on skates was in 2001, when I was about four years old. My Mom wanted to get me involved in the game at an early age and my Uncle Stephen at the time was playing high school hockey and was a great role model for me. I started playing hockey at Twin Rinks in Stamford, Connecticut where I learned basic hockey fundamentals, skating and stickhandling. After a couple years, my parents decided it would be best for me to stop hockey and dedicate more time to skiing because we spent all our winter weekends in Vermont. Seven years later, we had moved to Lake Forest and when I was in the 7th Grade got re-introduced to the game. For Christmas that year, I asked Santa for a pair of ice skates and a hockey stick. That entire winter season I practiced after school and on weekends at West Park and also at The Winter Club. I regained confidence in my ability to skate and my love for the game grew stronger. I decided to play Spring House League hockey for The Falcons and the competition kept me going and wanting to play more. Going into my freshman year at high school I decided to try-out for the Scouts. Knowing it was a stretch to make the team and having only played competitive hockey for two years, I practiced harder than I ever had before. I was excited to be chosen for the JV team and play at the next level. I spent three years playing JV and was selected to be a Captain my junior year and was honored to receive the Kevin Gorter Award last season. Now that I’m on the Varsity team, I look back at all the hard work, early mornings, wins, losses and lessons I have learned playing hockey. I’ve learned a great deal about myself, the importance of being a good teammate and the pride that comes from being a Scout. In the end, I believe that when you set your mind on a goal and put in the hard work, that goal will become reality.

#16 CONNOR KNOPI started skating as early as I can remember. I was on my first house league team with the Falcons at around age 5, playing for the Coyotes. I continued playing with the Falcons travel teams for many years, until moving to the Glenview Stars for a season. I have played hockey every season since I started, except 7th and 8th grade. I had a brief retirement after a couple bad seasons, but decided to come and play for the Scouts, making varsity my freshman year. Playing hockey has always been a part of my life, practically living in a rink September through March every year. Now, looking back, I wish I didn’t stop playing for those couple of years. Playing for the the high school has turned out to be a great experience. Playing in front of a crowd at home games is probably my favorite aspect of Scouts Hockey. The fans provide an energetic atmosphere that I hadn’t experienced earlier in my career. Next fall will be pretty strange, mainly because I won’t have teammates that I see and interact with almost everyday. I’d like to thank my parents for always supporting the hockey choices I have made and for taking me to and from many rinks.

#12 PETER LINCOLNI started playing hockey around the wee age of four at the winter club. In middle school I left the WC Polar bears and their captain (Jack Hubbard) for Falcons. But it wasn’t until I began playing for the Scouts when I truly started to appreciate the sport and all that comes with it. During my time with the Scouts I have made bonds with the guys that really made playing that much better. I wasn’t just having a blast on the ice, I was having a blast off the ice with some of my best friends. I am definitely going to miss everything about playing with the boys and for Coach Murph, Johnny, and good ol’ Coach Joe. I’d like to thank all the Coaches (especially Tom Boudreau who worked with me one on one a lot) for all they do for the program. SPEGAT

#3 MATT MODERWELLMatt began skating and playing hockey during his preschool years. He participated in the Lake Forest Park District learn to skate program, and spent many winter days on the ponds at West Park and the Glencoe Watts Ice Center. He played with the Falcons and Winnetka Hockey Associations and benefited greatly from the coaching he received from coaches: Wally Kormylo, Tom Miller, Ernie Kaplan, Randy Jordan, Kip Poncher, DJ LaVarre, Jason Hawkins, Bob Heelan, and coaches John Murphy and Johnny Murphy. Matt would like to thank all the people, from the rink attendants and Park District/Forestry crews, to the referees and parent volunteers who have given their time and efforts to make playing hockey possible for him.
