Glory to Jesus Christ! Слава Ісусу Христу!

Dear Friends,

This past Thursday, Vincent Lambert died. He was the 42 year old quadriplegic and brain-damaged man who was at the center of a long legal battle in France. Ultimately, the court ruled that the state had the right to deny him food and fluids – except for medication. On the ninth day he finally succumbed to this most cruel death sentence.

Nobody should ever believe that evil, suffering and death are part of God’s plan. To the contrary, God wills goodness, joy and life for each of us, eternally. But, through man’s disobedience, sin, death and suffering have now entered into creation and we need to recognize that. Working with that defect in our world, we look to Christ as our example when we encounter suffering and death. As such, we believe that suffering has a great redemptive value. In Colossians 1:24 we read, “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body, that is the church.” You may not like the strong wind, but if you build a windmill then you will have grounded the wheat into flour! This is the Christian view of what the world considers meaningless suffering: an enemy gives us shackles and we make them into crowns. That person dying on the bed is a treasure trove of graces for all those for whom he prays. Yet, the world looks at that man as useless and, in countries with socialized medicine, as a drain on the system. For people of this mindset, it is more expedient to end the lives of men like Mr. Lambert.

If you or your loved one are in this situation and a government or a company is making decisions about your life know that there are two types of treatment. “Ordinary means” are those medical procedures that are well established, known to be beneficial and not excessively burdensome due to expense or side effects. It goes without saying, that a patient’s age, condition and available technology will alter what is considered “ordinary.” On the other hand, “extraordinary means” of treatment are those procedures that are considered exceptional because they are experimental,

Page 4: Dear Friends, - htucc.com  · Web viewThis past Thursday, Vincent Lambert died. He was the 42 year old quadriplegic and brain-damaged man who was at the center of a long legal battle

expensive or have serious physical or psychological side effects. Dying with Christian dignity means we accept God’s will for our life’s end. We are allowed to forge extraordinary means and make due with ordinary means. This is not the same things as suicide. We are simply accepting our condition. We are not trying to fight death with treatment which are unreasonably out of proportion.

When death is around the corner, a Catholic is permitted to refuse forms of treatment that will only prolong the dying process. However, and this is of the utmost importance in our anti-God environment, normal care must never be suspended. This includes water, food, warmth and hygiene, and even the artificial administration of these goods, if it is not burdensome. This clearly would apply to the startling case of Mr. Lambert.

Obviously, the gravely ill and dying may, if they wish, choose to undergo extraordinary treatments. They may even submit to new and experimental therapies if no other remedies have worked.

The lesson of Mr. Lambert, and Ms. Sciavo before him, and the many unnamed people euthanized in places like Holland, Canada and Belgium, should rattle us to our core. No government has the right to deny her citizens the basic right to water and food. Yet, in a world which denies the most innocent humans (babies) the right to life, we ought not to be surprised if the State is expanding its grasp to manipulate how and when we die.

Nowhere does Sacred Scripture or Sacred Tradition mention any exceptions to the Fifth Commandment because of suffering or terminal illness. Life is unconditionally sacred and it is a gift to be received with reverence. If we have entered a phase in our civilization’s march of progress wherein we respect life only under certain condition, then any evil is possible. No one will be safe. Anyone could be arbitrarily classed as “lacking a sufficient quality of life.” If only we follow that order established by the living God that all life is unconditionally sacred, everyone will feel secure. We will all know that our lives won’t be eliminated if our “quality” of life decreases.

Christ does not promise us that we will escape trials in this life. He does, however, promise us ultimate victory. So, with that assurance to buoy our spirits, let us proceed as victors and not as those who are defeated. In the face of these attacks on the dignity of your mother, your wife, your husband, children and neighbors, let us reply as victors in the battle. Life is sacred and God has placed us here to witness to this!

Events at Holy Trinity

☛Many of you have seen the large signs that line Greentree Road advertising local businesses prior to the St Simon and Jude Festival - this year we are teaming up with AdVision signs to offer local businesses an opportunity to “sponsor” our church festival.  Banners will cost businesses $225 for a full color 3 foot by 5 foot sign or $275 (if business needs design work and layout). A simple business card normally does the trick or a logo with website or phone number. The

completed banners will be placed in front of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church as soon as they are printed giving sponsors 4-6 weeks of marketing and it helps our parish raise some funds for our festival expenses. We need parishioners to get the word out about this great advertising opportunity. Any questions - please contact Andrew Kurzawski 412-713-0714 - [email protected]

☛ We have cemetery plots of available for sale. Do you have yours purchased? Call the parish office.

☛ Attention! Holy Trinity has been chosen as a host site for Ante Čaljkušić’s Documentary film on the 40 Days for Life. We are hoping for a good turn out from our parishioners to watch this powerful film. It will be screened in our church hall after the 11am Liturgy on Sunday, July 28th. We will need help to set up the parish hall. Kruno Prušar is coming from Croatia to present this film.

☛We made, cooked and froze about 700 cabbage rolls today for the Festival. Another 800 to go. Thank you to everyone who came to help out. It was a joy to work with such a wonderful dedicated group of people. Out next cabbage roll making day is Saturday August 10th at 8 a.m. Please consider to come.

Our Auction committee is still looking for the following donations:

Catechism Teaching Excerpt“Lead us not into temptation…”

(2847)Sins come from consenting to temptation. We ask God not to lead us into temptation, meaning "do not allow us to enter" or "do not let us yield to" temptation. God cannot be tempted and he tempts no one. This petition asks him to block our way into temptation and to give us the Spirit of discernment.

The Spirit helps us to know the difference between trials (needed for our spiritual growth) and temptations (which lead to death). We also discern between "being tempted" and "consenting to temptation" realizing that some things seem desirable but their fruit is death. "There is a certain usefulness to temptation. We discover our evil inclinations" (Origen).

Serving Which Master? (2848)

"Lead us not into temptation" demands a "decision of the heart." "No one can serve two masters" (Mt 6:24). "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit (Gal 5:25). When we are tempted, God will "provide the way of escape, so you may be able to endure it" (1 Cor 10:13).

Victory by Prayer (2849)

Jesus overcame his temptations by prayer and our victory is also won by prayer. In this petition, Christ unites us to his battle, urges us to vigilance, and prays to the Father, "Keep them in your name" (Jn 17:11). This petition dramatically asks for final perseverance, "So, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake" (Rev16:15).

CS LEWIS QUOTES OF THE WEEK

Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace in difficulties.

Don't shine so that others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see HIM.

When the whole world is running towards a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less. There is someone that I love even though I don't approve of what he does. There is someone I accept though some of his thoughts and actions revolt me. There is someone I forgive though he hurts the people I love the most.

That person is......me. Don't judge a man by where he is, because you don't know how far he has

come. Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You

have to let go at some point in order to move forward.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may

sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with

the approval of their own conscience.

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

Gospel for the 4th Sunday after Pentecost(Matthew 8:28-9:1)

[28] And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. [29] And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" [30] Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. [31] And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." [32] And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. [33] The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. [34] And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. [9:1] And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.
