Well done! Once again, I politely request that parents don’t park in the school staff car park. It becomes very congested and UNSAFE for all students. Some thoughtless adults continue to put their children and other children in harm’s way. The car park is not big enough for staff as it is. When staff members have to go out for meetings and return, parents have taken those spaces. Please be supportive and considerate of this request. The fire truck couldn’t get out this week because it was blocked in. If we have an emergency and need to get police, ambulance or fire trucks through the second gate and parents have blocked access, lives could be at risk! Thank you to those parents who comply with these wishes and walk the extra distance to pick up their children. Staff members are finalising student reports to be sent home in last week of term. As you may or may not be aware we are also in the process of implementing the new National Curriculums into whole school programs. The first curriculum to be implemented in 2014 is English. Staff Development Day is on Monday 15 th July. Staff will be participating in English Curriculum workshops at Holgate P.S. on this pupil free day. Students will return to school next term on Tuesday 16 th July. The NSW Board of Studies has set out this new syllabus in stages of development. Kindergarten is called Early Stage 1. Years 1 & 2 are called Stage 1, Years 3 & 4 are called Stage 2, and Years 5 & 6 are called Stage 3. In English, students learn to read, write, talk and listen. They learn about English language and literature, how language varies according to context and how to communicate to a range of audiences for different purposes. They learn to read for information and for pleasure. They learn about poetry, novels and plays. They gain a sound grasp of language structures, punctuation, spelling and grammar.

Dear Gosford East Families, Congratulations to our Central Coast Dance Festival students and their wonderful teachers Mrs Boyd and Miss Middleton, who danced for Gosford East, and did us all proud on Tuesday night.

Staff Development Day is on Monday 15th July. Staff will be participating in English Curriculum workshops at Holgate P.S. on this pupil free day. Students will return to school next term on Tuesday 16th July.

  • Principal’s Report Cont. I thought you might be interested in what that learning looks like in each stage:

In Kindergarten students: Listen to and follow simple instructions involving one step. Give short talks and express ideas, e.g. tell news, describe a favourite toy or pet. Begin developing reading and comprehension skills, e.g. recognise simple sight words, recognise most sounds of the alphabet, use illustrations and picture clues to make predictions about stories when reading. Write simple words using letters and sounds to help spell out known words, e.g. ‘d - o - g’ Write simple sentences, e.g. ‘I made a cake’. Begin to use word processing software to write simple sentences. Recognise grammatical patterns such as action verb and nouns in a group, e.g. when the teacher reads to class from a ‘big book’.

Some Year 1 examples Listen to and follow a short procedure, e.g. carry out instructions for a simple task. Communicate simple information, e.g. give directions to the library, provide a brief retelling of a familiar story. Develop an increasing range of reading and comprehension skills on familiar topics, e.g. sound out unknown words or break them down into syllables, respond to punctuation when reading aloud, express opinions about characters in stories. Produce simple written pieces on familiar topics, e.g. short recounts of personal experience, descriptions of family members. Spell known sight words, e.g. ‘said’, ‘was’, ‘some’, ‘have’.

Some Year 2 examples Listen attentively and share ideas or give information in group and class discussions, e.g. about familiar events or topics such as birthdays or sport. Begin to read about less familiar topics. Make inferences and predictions when reading stories to develop comprehension. Use most common punctuation marks in writing, e.g. full stops, capital letters, spaces between words. Use word processing software to produce simple writing, e.g. stories, invitations, recipes. Use reading cues to understand written texts, e.g. matching letters to sounds (phonics) and breaking words into syllables.

Some Year 3 examples Communicate for a range of purposes and audiences, e.g. conduct brief interviews to obtain information, give instructions for making a piece of craft. Use a wider range of reading strategies to confirm predictions and locate information, e.g. skim read using headings, sub-headings, key words, layout and graphics. Self-correct a broader range of punctuation in own writing, e.g. question marks, commas, apostrophes for contractions, quotation marks for written speech. Begin to produce different forms of electronic publishing, e.g. slide shows, multimedia Spell familiar words using knowledge of common letter patterns and sound sequences, e.g. high, thigh, thought, bought.

  • Principal’s Report Cont. Some Year 4 examples Employ various speaking skills to give confident oral presentations, e.g. gesture, facial expression, pause, emphasis, volume, clarity. Begin reading about more challenging topics, e.g. biography of a famous person, an historical event. Develop a wider range of responses to reading, e.g. identify writer’s viewpoint, describe and compare different interpretations, identify stereotypes and symbolic meanings. Produce more complex pieces of writing, e.g. an explanation of how a specialised machine works or what causes a specific natural process. Use a variety of skills to produce well-structured writing, e.g. drafting, revising and proofreading.

Some Year 5 examples Communicate effectively for an increasing range of purposes, e.g. to entertain, inform and influence audiences. Read, recognise and respond to themes and issues within texts, and justify interpretations by referring to own knowledge and experience. Write well-structured sentences, using a variety of more complex grammatical features, e.g. linking an independent (main) clause and a dependent (subordinate) clause by using a conjunction indicating time, place, manner, reason, condition etc. as in ‘When the bell rang, Kim went home’. Use known word meanings and base words when spelling unknown words, e.g. heal, healthy; sign, signature.

Some Year 6 examples Read and respond to a range of more complex literary and factual texts, e.g. extended novels, abstract poems, technical books and websites, historical works. Publish own writing dealing with more complex topics, ideas and issues, e.g. sustained arguments/discussions about contemporary social issues supported by evidence. Communicate using a range of media, e.g. video, multimedia, print, audio. Use several comprehension strategies for finding information in texts, e.g. skimming for gist, scanning for specific information, using an index, using a glossary.

If your child is working soundly in their stage group their assessment of achievement will be a “C”. If they are working above their stage they may receive a “B” or “A”. If your child is having learning difficulties and working below their stage, they may receive a “D” or “E”. Warm regards, Cherie Bourke Gosford East Principal (Acting)

  • Give Me 5 For Kids PJ Day Last Thursday we had a special PJ’s day for ‘Give Me 5 For Kids’. We were able to raise $303 to donate to this very worthy cause. Thank you to everyone for your support. Health Issue For your information, there has been a suspected case of German Measles reported to the school this week. Thank you Julie Griffith School Admin Manager On Thursday 6th June the Central Coast Choral Festival students went to Niagara Park School for a Composer’s Workshop. Two of the songs the Choral Festival students have been learning were written by Hamish Lane an Australian composer who grew up on the Central Coast. The GEPS students had the amazing opportunity to spend some time with Hamish and find out first-hand how a song is written and composed. The students had lots of fun making vocal sound scapes and participated in the process of writing a song together with Hamish’s help. Hamish’s musical expertise was inspiring and the students left the workshop with a greater appreciation of music. Thank you to Kate Glasson, Jodi McCall, Jodie Probert, Melissa Batten, Cymantha Renton, Caroline Windust, Nyssa Van Dam and Natasha Renton (our back up, on call) for transporting the students to and from the event and giving up your time. Your help was greatly appreciated. Rehearsal 2 is on Thursday 25th July at Woy Woy South. Save the date: Central Coast Choral Festival Concert, 5th September 2013, matinee and evening performances. Book your tickets early to ensure you get a seat. I will notify you as soon as tickets go on sale. Linden Connell

The other week a team from Gosford East PS went to Hylton Moore Oval to play AFL.

All of our students tried their very best and their behaviour was excellent on a very trying day.

Needless to say it rained but I did not hear one comment complaining. Eventually, the carnival had to be called off but all the students had had an opportunity to get themselves muddy as Ms Sansom noticed when she had to wash the jumpers 3 times!

They were very competitive on the day beating Chertsey in the first game and only losing against Kariong and Ettalong by small margins.

A couple of people stood out. Lewis was a rock at the back, John looked just like what he was – a soccer goalkeeper, Bailey & Leigtham spent all day kicking to each other and Ruby showed how tough she was once by reefing the ball off an opposing player.

A big thankyou to all parents who assisted on the day – keeping track of the students, putting up tents and keeping me informed of rain coming across. The forecast was actually not bad – just a little rain. Well Gosford got more than anywhere else in the state.

A special thank you to Channette for managing and Mark for his tent and computer knowledge.

28th June Red Nose Day Funds raised on Red Nose Day go to support research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) being undertaken by the Children’s Hospital, Westmead.

6th July Dalai Lama’s birthday His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama was born in Tibet 6 July 1935. Each Dalai Lama is seen as a reincarnation of his predecessor. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Prize in Peace in 1989.

9th July Ramadan begins (Muslim) Ramadan commemorates the period when Mohammed received divine revelations from Allah. It is an important time for Muslims who at this time fast between the hours of sunrise and sunset for the entire month of Ramadan.

  • Hi Everyone,

We will be making a few changes to our menu in Term 3 with a few of the slower sellers leaving the menu. This will be coming out in Week 1 but will not start until Week 2. A little reminder about our EFTpos facility: - If you want to send in your details, we can only process credit cards off line and not debit cards.

I hope everyone enjoys the break. See you next term.

    Thanks Jo C
