Dear Members and SupportersOnce again we are very pleased to welcome Bishop’s Stortford to Volac Park. It’s always a great encounter and last season we had the edge over them. This year who knows what might happen as both teams bump along near the bottom of the table, still looking for a convincing run of form.
The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed a couple of pieces in the press about the RFU’s 11 month rugby season that is heading our way. For most of us, a cyclical year of large ball sport followed by strawberries and champagne with a little yellow ball or snoozing under a Panama hat whilst leather collides with willow is the ideal way to prepare for the new season. This will diminish the fun to the equivalent of a daily trudge around the M25. Bonkers!
It was great to see three Cambridge teams in action last week and in particular
some of our former Mini & Youth now putting in regular appearances for the 3rd’s. Unfortunately it all didn’t go to plan with Newmarket vs the 3rd’s and Cinderford vs the 1st team getting the results. However our 2nd team took the points against Cinderford 2’s but the key thing is that we managed to put out 3 teams with a full compliment of substitutes. Rugby at Volac Park is definitely the winner.
Finally the half-term camps for the Mini & Youth which were run by the community team were a great success. Small groups focused on skills and the improvements were noticeable by the end of the 2-day sessions. Thanks go to Simon, Ben, Rob, Cam and Fin for organising this.

match reportvs cinderford
Dominant Cinderford, took 4 points and left Blood & Sand the consolation of a losing bonus point...
Cinderford 14 Cambridge 9
More haste, less speed would have served Richie Williams’ side well as they fought back into opposition territory for the last 10 minutes of the half but by then, as it turned out, the damage had already been done. Cinderford pinned them back from the off and eventually the referee tired of scrum/reset/penalty and went under the sticks inside the first 5 minutes. Matt Meek spent 10 minutes in the sin bin as a result. Then a quick penalty saw the hosts go forward again and the ball ended up in the hands of giant second-row Ben Chan who went over for a try, which was well converted by Dan Pointon.
The Cinderford website has it almost right after that – “The Forest of Dean side were denied a third try soon afterwards when they were penalised for a double movement and after this Cambridge gradually came more into the match, but were unable breakthrough a well-organised home defence before half-time.” What it doesn’t say was Cambridge were adjudged held up over the line, and that with a bit more vision could have scored several times rather than hammering away at the centre of the pitch in an effort to force the ball over.
It was, though, a game of two halves – and had Cambridge been able to reduce the deficit at halftime it could have been a different story. Straight from the re-start, Lawrence Rayner landed a penalty. Shortly afterwards he was a shade off from another from nigh-on 50 metres. Two more successful kicks, the first won by the tenacity of Mike Ayrton in chasing down a kick to the 22 and the second in exactly the same spot a minute or so later meant the game was well and truly there to be won.
Cambridge dominated territory and possession for the majority of the rest of the half but still couldn’t find a way over the home line. And Ayrton & Co finished the match with 13 players after yellow cards for Darren Fox and Jake McCloud. Fox’s was galling, as it resulted in a penalty reversal – and that penalty would have made it 14–12, with plenty of time on the clock and a kick-off to receive whilst in the ascendency in terms of possession and momentum.
All in all, a performance which took the best and worst of away games in the wet at Esher and Ampthill, but sadly not in equal measure.
Steve Jackson
Arctic Fox...
I hate to sound like a grumpy old man – which, of course, I am, increasingly, on both counts but there was a point last Saturday where the air turned bluer than my fingers. Several points, to be honest, but the first was half way up the hill to Dockham Road. The temperature dropped to 2 degrees. And a blizzard howled around the car – the same snowfall that continued on and off all afternoon and made the ball something that would have been better off in a bucket of cocktails.
Cinderford were clearly more used to it. We weren’t. And much like a Ferrari, we’ve struggled – Ampthill aside – in the wet. As you’ll have seen from the match report, it was a game of two halves. Or more accurately, we had 10 minutes at the end of the first and the first 30 of the second. As for the opening half hour, we only got out of our half when kicking off. Three times – and two of those were after we’d conceded.
It’s been frustrating – so much good work so far this season, some great scores, some great results, but, Ampthill aside, never
up to or greater than the sum of the parts. There’ll be a few changes this afternoon, I think – a freshen up and some joined up thinking are needed. Because, as with our other defeats within 7, we could and should have won.
If you missed this week’s Tuesday Night Sport – and there was much relevant to the Club as a whole and an entity – yiu can Listen Again via the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire website. I’d entreat you to do so if only to listen to John Willis and Cate – chair of our Cambridge Rubies. Even her other half enjoyed it and I think you will too.
So, it’s another huge game today – and even a win akin to our last encounter with Stortford here at Grantchester Road would be welcome. Who can forget the last-gasp 50 metre penalty just before Christmas last year from Dan Lewis? Or, indeed, the second half at Silver Leys in April. I reckon it’s going to be a belter.

We welcome Bishop’s Stortford U9s who have travelled the 30 miles north for the curtain raiser today. Thanks must go to the coaches, parents and players for agreeing to be our opposition.
Cambridge Under 9s are a group of 30+ players who meet at 9.30 every Sunday morning. Our principle aim is to encourage children to embrace the fun of playing rugby as well as teaching them the ethos of the game – fair play and respect of your coaches, your team and your opponents.
The majority of the group started with tag rugby in the under 7s two seasons ago. This season we have
mini&youthsectionsponsored by
eagerly left the tags in the lockers and are now concentrating on the skill of tackling. There has been a lot of technique for the players to learn with regards to body position and commitment for making a successful tackle.
The players are still learning but as coaches we are seeing progress being made with each training session that we have had. Each team cannot field more than 7 players at any time and the pitches that we play on are 60m x 30m meaning that there is plenty of space of the children to do what they enjoy most, scoring tries!
