DEAR NEIGHBOUR It’s been a challenging year so far to say the least and ARTC recognises that the impact to the community and our people may continue for some time to come. Ensuring the ARTC network keeps operating safely is critical to our ongoing support of the transport supply chain which provides economic benefits, including supporting local jobs and businesses. To achieve this, ARTC does need to continue undertaking track maintenance and while these works are essential, we are extremely conscious of the significant responsibility to the health and safety of our people as well as the communities in which we operate. I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that we are implementing a range of hygiene regulations at work sites and will continue to regularly review our practices. I hope the above provides some insight into the steps we are actively taking to manage risk and address any concerns that you may have while observing ongoing ARTC works in your local community. JACK’S FUNDRAISNG FOR MAITLAND HOSPTIALOver the last two years Jack Mears, Infrastructure Maintainer at Maitland Provisioning Centre (PC), has raised money for Maitland Hospital by collecting cans and bottles from the Maitland PC and cashing them in with Return & Earn. Each year ARTC has doubled Jack’s fundraising efforts.

During the visit to the hospital to present the cheque, nursing staff demonstrated how they use the computerised spirometry testing unit that was purchased using the raised funds.

Having this equipment at Maitland means children from surrounding and remote areas can avoid sometimes difficult travel to Newcastle for this test.

Afterwards the team was given a special tour and discussed how they would like to spend their recent donation. Jack and the team are excited for the challenge to beat last year’s total, knowing the difference they have made to the local community.

Each year we support worthy causes within our local communities, ARTC receive partnership, donation and charity requests of a varying nature every year. If you have would like to apply for support please visit www.artc.com.au/community/community-investment/.

MUSWELLBROOK RAIL BRIDGES UPGRADE UNDERWAYFrom mid-2020 ARTC is planning to replace three existing rail bridges in Muswellbrook. Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack said “these are important works to upgrade the three rail bridges in the heart of Muswellbrook. This project will ensure the safety and reliability of the rail line as the existing bridges near the end of their structural lifespan.”

The Project involves the replacement of the bridge structures in Muswellbrook that span the Hunter River, Muscle Creek and Bridge Street with two new concrete bridge structures.

It is expected that the project will take two years to complete and support over 200 jobs. ARTC delivers more than $100 million worth of maintenance and construction work annually in the Hunter Valley.

HUNTER SAFETY AWARDS FINALISTSARTC has been listed as a finalist in two categories of this year’s Hunter Safety Awards. The awards focus on promoting and rewarding Hunter businesses that display best practice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

In the innovation category, the team identified an opportunity to improve how rail clips are delivered and transported to site. They’ve now eliminated single use drums and replaced them with solid, reusable and durable yellow bins. The new bins have more handles to make them easier to move.

“Our position as an industry leader and safety innovator means we could commit to enough volume to make the change worthwhile. It truly represents our one-team approach to engaging our contractors and developing an innovative solution” said Brett Teasdale, Principal Safety Advisor, Hunter Valley.

ARTC Safety Advisor, Jamie Collins had a large role in this safety project. He’s nominated for Student of the Year for his outstanding academic results achieved while working full-time and supporting a young family.

Good on you Jamie!
