FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students Last week the year 6 students were very lucky to visit Sculptures By The Sea in Cottesloe. It was a great opportunity for the students to see the work of National and International Artists and also to participate in an art workshop. Thanks to Alcoa for making a contribution towards this. Thanks to all who have supported our Easter fundraisers. Please continue to bring Easter raffle prizes and sell your raffle tickets. Hot cross bun orders are still being taken and there is prize, of a big Easter hamper, for the student who places the most orders. This year our year and 5 students will be completing their NAPLAN tests online. Parents of these students should have received an information leaflet which was sent home at the end of last week. The My School website has just updated the NAPLAN information from 2017. Please visit www.myschool.edu.au to see how Calista PS compares with other like schools and schools across Australia. This month we say goodbye to Andrea Folkard from the Child and Parent Centre. Andrea is moving on to undertake some new challenges, we appreciate all of the hard work that she has put in over the last few years and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours. We welcome Anne Nilsen, who is the new CPC Coordinator and Echo Yang who is the Program Support Officer. We look forward to working alongside them in the future. We remind the students of our four values: Respect, Resilience, Perseverance and Compassion on a regular basis. It has been great to see our students demonstrating these values in and around the school. This week’s assembly will be presented by Rooms 6 and 7. Please feel free to join us for a brief morning tea in the Child and Parent Centre afterwards. ABORIGINAL SEASONS

Bunuru - Second summer (season of the adolescence) February - March

Bunuru is the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. Therefore, traditionally this was, and still is, a great time for living and fishing by the coast, rivers and estuaries. Because of this, freshwater foods and seafood made up major parts of the diet during this time of year.

Bunuru is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah, Marri and Ghost Gums.

Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance.

As the hot, dry weather continues the seed upon the cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer.

Displays Please take the time to have a look at our wonderful displays around the school. Thank you to year 4 and year 2 students who have on display some wonderful work in the office.

If you get a chance pop in to the library to have a look at the books on display for the Chinese New Year. Themes will be changed regularly and students are encouraged to vote for which theme they would like to see.

Hello, my name is Rebecca Birch. I am the new chaplain at Calista Primary School and I will be working every Monday and Tuesday. I have been a chaplain for 10 years, with most of my time previously spent at Kelmscott P.S. and Bramfield Park P.S.

Being a chaplain is all about supporting students socially and emotionally, with respect and compassion, so they feel settled and are better equipped to learn and achieve. There are many and varied reasons for a student wanting to see the school chaplain, from issues with friends or family, to bereavement or breakdown. All children will be heard, cared for and respected.

I am a support person in the school for staff, students and families when they need someone to chat with or require a listening ear. I do this through; social/emotional programmes in small groups, spending time in class, one-one chats and a variety of other ways. Discussions with students and families are kept confidential unless there is a welfare concern which will be directed to the school administration.

The first 6 weeks of term have been wonderful; it has been great meeting everyone and I am looking forward to a brilliant year. If you have any questions about what I do or you would like to have a chat, please leave a message (your name and a contact number) with the front office and I will call you back. Alternatively you can catch me at Breakfast Club or I will be around on the school quad at the end of the day.

On Thursday 8th March, the Year 6 students went on an excursion to Cottesloe Beach to view one of the world’s largest sculpture exhibitions – Sculptures By The Sea. This world-renowned exhibition featured incredible sculptures from over 73 artists from 18 different countries around the world. The students spent the whole day viewing the numerous sculptures that dotted the beach, sidewalk, jetty and ocean. A firm favourite was the inflatable “snorkelling head”!!

The 56 Calista students were then lucky enough to spend a few hours in the afternoon meeting and engaging with one of the featured artists who led the students in their own sculpture making. All in all, it was a fantastic day that was enjoyed by everyone.
